Hi bhargavoza, here in Greece we have three main festival days, ohi day, clean Monday and Easter. Each is celebrated in their own way. Clean Monday, the first day of lent, is celebrated with kite flying (like your Utarayan) and eating of halva and flat bread. Ohi day, which means no, is a reminder of the day Greece got embrolied in the second world war when the Prime minister said no to Mussilini and refused to have Italian troops come to play here, so they invaded through Albania instead. On this day all the schoolchildren dress up in national dress and make parades and recite poetry and keep history alive. Easter is a huge party, families get together and eat lamb cooked on the spit, have red egg hitting contests, parade around the villages from the church holding lighted candles, indulge in the most foul lamb innards soup you've ever tasted and generally have a big party. We don't really celebrate chrismtas, it is very low key.
