How do you find a new message?

I had 11 messages yesterday, today I had 12. I looked and couldn't find a new message. I went to "new messages" and saw nothing I hadn't read before. One of my friends might think I'm ignoring them. I don't want to erase all my messages in order to get each new one without confusion but I may have to. Is this the only way to find new messages, by erasing everyone you get as soon as you read them and take care of them?

When you see that you have a new message just open 'messages'.
It may not be a brand new one but just a response added to a message which already has other responses on it.
The last name on each message is either yours (and it has no further responses) or the name of the user that sent it.

And that's another thing! Replying to the reply, I don't see how I can do that. I'll just have to learn to navigate their weird system, I wish there were more hours in the day!

Wen you have the message open
at the top to the right you will see 'respond'
and if you hit that your response will then fall directly under the message you received instead of starting a new one on the same topic.

That's one of the things that complicate me because if the message came from the same user you had pm before they will reply to the message that you sent to them as link. instead of getting a whole new message, you get a follow up messages from the same user. i got used to it in time.
