I miss having a wind-up watch!

With most watches today being "battery operated," I have noticed that mine always stop running at the most inconvenient of times. That, and it is a nuisance to have to go somewhere to get the battery replaced, and pay each and every time. Do you miss having a wind-up watch?? I surely do. Karen

I don't even miss having a watch! I use my cell phone to tell time mostly and I only need a watch when I am on someone else's time, which is rare. I bought a watch when I was teaching 4 classes a day and I accidentally laundered it!

Hi Canellita. I see your point about using the cell phone. So of course, if you wear no watch anyway, it wouldn't matter lol. I've laundered a few in my time, as well! Ack! lol Karen

You should have seen my face when I found that watch in the dryer!

The thing that gets me is how much it costs when you have to replace the battery by taking it to a jeweler because you can't figure out how to do it yourself!

You are so right! A decent watch can be purchased quite reasonably these days, but by the time you've replaced the batteries over the course of a few years, you've paid at least twice for the watch all over again. Karen

Now that you mention this I also miss the wind-up watch. I hate it when the battery runs out, in fact it is so much trouble to get a new one that I have often brought a new watch.

You make a good point, Pat. Watches today can be bought quite cheaply, and sometimes, it makes more sense to replace the watch instead of the batteries. Karen

Hi Karen...I know what you mean. I can not wear the watches that have the batteries in them for some reason my system makes them stop as soon as I put them on and they touch my skin. I have tries to put nail polish and some other things on the back to coat it but nothing helps the battery just stops for some reason. I know you can still buy windup watches but from what I have seen they are pretty expensive. I guess the companies decided they weren;t making enough money with just selling watches they had to make them need a battery every so often so they could make more money from the consumer. flutterby

Hi Flutterby. I have only known one other person who experienced the same phenomenon as you. He could never wear a battery operated watch without it stopping. And yes, the wind-ups are so expensive. I have no idea why they switched to mostly battery watches. I miss the other kind. Karen

know it is such a bothersome problem especially when you are stuck somewhere and can't find a clock and have to bother a total stranger for the time. They look at you as if to say "why the hell don't you have a watch?"..... flutter

Hi Ann. I have also noticed that the battery watches don't last as long. By the time you've replaced a battery several times, the watch has ended up costing much more than the priced paid when it was purchase. Thank you for responding. Karen

i don't have a watch anymore - mainly because of the pain of replacing batteries. i think i'd use a wind-up one though, if i could find another cheap one (haven't had one since i was a child)

Hi Jb...I haven't had one in years either. It seems they are hard to find, unless you want to pay a fortune for one from a jewelry store! Karen
