Well myloters, everyone kinda drinks, I mean hard drinks. So also the teaching community. Now the question is if others can booze and get drunken and accepted as normal and there is no issue over it, why a teacher's similar action is not accepted and there is a great fuss about it? Can not a teacher have the luxury of boozing and have his/her own time? Forget about his getting drunk and lying on the road side as this is too much. But he could drink at home harming no one's interest, causing none any disturbance. Still he is tagged with a bad name and people look with a crooked eye. I am not sure about the scenario in other country but in India this is this. Rajib. 01.08.09

teacher is a holy career here. so many others habits they cant have. otherwise, they will get crooked eyes. such as the businessmen can enter and exit all pubs very proudly, but if the teachers, others maybe will think why they have such more money, why they can enter such places to play? etc. teacher was always considered to be the most earnest career. they should have all the good habits.... but i think if at home, they can drink. no one will know it. after all, they are human being too. if in public, i also do hope they dont to be drunk.

Hi yolanda, I have realized one thing the teachers image is almost same all over the globe. But do not you think the age old concept should change and they be considered as any other mortal who has wishes to fill up?

i do think and hope so as u. but u know now that we all have the concept for the teachers for such a long time. it's not easy to change. just step by step to implant in other careers.

Hi, So you are not against if a teacher maintains privacy, ya. Yes I too feel so. It should not affect the society and the students as well.

hello krajibg, I think they are not allowed to drink if they are in school viscinity for that matter. For they are the second parents of our children and that they should set a good example to them. Maybe, it's just find to have their drinks if they are already at home or in a bar or maybe if they attended a party for as long as they are not in duty. They are human too and that they need to relax once in a while.

Hello Robert, Yes teachers are regarded the second parents specially in the school level and therefore drinking by them infront of the children could cast an adverse effect for that deal. But what about a lecturer or a professor? Can not they go libertine a little bit more ? Or can not all the teaching community have privacy or a private life where none plays the voyeuristic role.

No, I don't think that is right to label a person becuase of their own choices. If drink does not effect their job or their own family life, then no harm done. A few causual drinks doesn't mean you are a bad person. If they effect your job or cause harm to your family because you go overboard then that is a different issue and yes, then that person can be looked on as doing harm to others.

My ex classmate, she is a teacher now. Every weekend she goes out with her friends and party just like other people. I don't see any problem with that. As long as they are not drinking in class then what is the fuss all about. Duh!

i think that teachers should be able to drink, but responsibly and make sure they are not drunk or hung over when they come to school or school functions.

My dad was a very popular and good teacher. He occassionally drank. I remember my parents on occassion having people over and they had drinks and socialized. It wasn't often. This was back in the 60's and we were in a small town. It was a 2 room school house ...outdated even then. My dad was principal of that school as well as a teacher. He tried to modernize it...teach the girls sports...hold some dances. The schoolboard came down on him hard. Most of the town was on his side but I remember some of them bringing up the fact that he drank and making an issue out of it. It was front page news for months and it was a bit tough being 12 and listening to the opposing side. He was a great dad and teacher. he ended up getting out of the profession just to end the drama. Sad because he was a very passionate teacher and his students loved him. The parents did as well. The ones complaining were the higher ups....school board etc.

That was exactly what happened and sadly it was only a few people and none of whom had kids in his classes. All the parents and students rallied for him but the situation was so public and ridiculous that he opted to step down. He fought them for a while but just got tired of the battle. It was too bad because he was a very good teacher.

An out cast your dad had to leave the school, how it must have had come upon him. With a squeezed heart left the school but his student had their love for the great soul. similar is the situation here. Even if one drinks in door or socialize people would say that a teacher is not entitled to drink. Is it democracy? what bad did your dad did? Nothing but the only bad that burned their eyes was that he would occasionally take drink.

If the teacher is able to take care of his obligations and lose his student's respect through his drinking then i don't see where there would be a problem. If the teacher makes his drinking apparent and he loses a good reputation becasue of it then the school authorities may have words with him and take action. When a person has such a job they have to guard against any thing that may shadow his rep and make the children he is teaching see him in a bad light. This is how it used to be, not sure now.

Youre right ofcourse. I think the people in such offices if you will need to respectful of their own positions and act accordingly. Just one more breaking away of the old traditions and rules of conduct. Sad.

Hi celt, If this were limited to the school teachers only well to some extent would be accepted but college and university teachers are not spared as well. Well if I take care and even if I do not take in a public place if one or the other comes to it would explode like a volcano.

Well, everyone deserves to enjoy themselves and teachers also have their social life too. It would be unfair for teachers not to have a social life, furthermore what is wrong with drinking hard drinks. But make sure the level are controlled and overdosed and that would be fine, teachers are also human being, and it is the society that have decided that teachers must not do this and that because they are the educator. But i on the other hand an educator but i also have my social life. i smoke and drink and clubs too but never infront of my students.

Hi pal, Very logical argument. Depriving the teaching community from what others are enjoying is surely not a welcomed gesture. But as you put, things should not go beyond the limit and this act should not be performed , I mean shouldn't drink if you know that there are students around. Seeing is different from hearing. Thanks for sharing.

at first our society recognise a teacher as a most educated person who intends to make students a perfact human. for this cause students normaly imitate students attitude as well behaviuour. so the gurdians seek that a teacher should restrain himself from all this insociable matters. anyway i admit a teacher to take alchohol but with a limit. no need to act by insobriety. a teacher has a social status and he must have to maintain it. everybody has freedom to live their life as they wish. no one can interfere. but if u break the social bindings by your insipience behaviour then u may be insulted. thanks.

here in my country, it is alright for a teacher to drink, its not really a big deal here. but i think if one is in that profession, he or she should be careful that he does not influences his or her students from it. its ok to drink but not get drunk especially when you are outside your house drinking, like in a bar or something like that. but if you are in your house, then its ok to get drunk since if you passed out there, no one will see you except those that are in your house.

Hi jayrene, It is not a big deal there but is so here. Once people come to know that a teacher or a professor takes drink, either occasionally or regularly, be it at his own home he would be looked at with a different angle as if he has committed a crime. actually our society has not come up to the age as yet.

I think that if you are a teacher and are out having a drink, or 2, it is no one's business. If you are out and about and making a complete spectical of yourself, then you need to stop. Drinking at home should be fine. In America, almost anyone can get away with anything! I wish there was a middle ground on things that people are allowed to get away with!

Yes I am a teacher in a college and just curious why people make such a mess when a teacher or a professor like us take drink? This is not that we are arm in arm with them and have bottles in hands. that middle ground is a dangerous thing.

I don't see any reason why it would look bad that a teacher drinks. Just because someone decides to teach doesn't mean they aren't a person like everyone else. As long as the teacher doesn't try to promote drinking to their students there is no harm. Another unacceptable thing a teacher could be doing is drinking while on the school campus. Otherwise what the person does is their own business and everyone should stop prying into their life. Scott

Hi scot, Nice topic you got to going ahead I guess right. This is your version that this is not at all a big deal to drink by teachers but this is in India, especially in the rural and semi urban area. The age old concept has not got yet erased out. Thanks for sharing. And welcome to the wonderful platform to interact and argue.

I think like you say they should have some level of knowing when to stop, as should anybody - after all seeing people passed out on the roadshow is not nice! However teachers should be allowed a drink in their own time if they want to relax that way!

Hi there, I appreciate your logic that teachers , if at all are up to drinking should be in control.

I know several teachers who are very respected that drink on a fairly regular basis. They have parties at their homes, they go to parties and social events, they drink, they have a good time, and they stay out of trouble. If they choose to drink, and they are adults, it is really no one's business what they do. Drinking is not against the law, and as long as they are mindful of the law, there should be no problem at all. To say that teachers should not drink is like saying that an off duty police officer should not drink, and they drink just as much as everybody else.

well, that is one of the pitfalls of being a teacher (actually, no offense) but in developed countries this is no big fuss as long as the concerned teacher doesn't cause a scenario for any profession would really entail a crooked eye if anyone causes a scene. anyway, as my motto goes: look at the people who criticize and see if they have any right.

Hi Rittchelle, Yes unless and until any one make a spectacle of himself thee should not be any problem but as you said excess of anything is bad.

According to the Indian tradition, we consider a Teacher-(Guru) equivalent to our father and mother. Hence we find it a bit odd if a teacher himself indulges in those kind of activities. But at present, the scenario has changed a lot and teaching has just become one profession and not devotion. Hence at this point of stage, I personally do not say anything wrong about boozing. Be it anyone, it is their personal wish and unless or until he harms anyone. The tag name depends upon the location you are in. If you are in a City and hails from a hig class university, then people wont consider it as an offence but if the same thing is being done in a suburban area, then it is conisdered to be one of the greatest sins.

The news media, parents, church goers, and teachers all teach how dangerous the drinking can be to our system. They teach not to drive and drink. I believe there is a fine line for a teacher to drink. If he/she have a drink in the privacy of their home and can contain their emotions, then why not have a night cap. It is when a teacher is out in the public having a drink then that is when it becomes a issue. If you want to have a social drink in public then why not do go out of your town that you teach in. Don't you think that would be the best solution to keep down the stink?

Hi there, that is what I have been crying over. No problem that we teachers should be respectful people but we can have our privacy and if I do not break your window pane getting drunk you have nothing to look me down. And yes the last solution is better for those who wish to booze out and get drunk as well. Thank you.

I don't think it is a matter that should be judged by profession than by personal preference. Your question probably stems from the philosophy that holds teachers as sacred but in today's world it is a profession like any else so i don't think it shpoould be treated any differently.
