The essence of all the steps you follow to be a part of NASA is, you need excellency in education, superb abilities to work hard, absolute physical fitness and steadfast dedication to be a part of NASA and be an astronaut. Also you need USA citizenship, so better do your post graduation in USA. At first you have to fill out appropriate forms and submit them to NASA which screens them and you are asked for week long session of personal interviews, medical tests etc. After your selection there, you need to report to NASA's Johnson space center in Houston, Texas for two year long training including classes of basic science, technology, space shuttle system and trained in different adverse environments. After such a vigorous training, you have to pass few tests which continues for 10 months and if passed you are selected in NASA's space program. Happy MyLotting.

See, all these are for being part of space program. And the answer to your question is in my first line of response. For study point of view you have got no excuses rather than to excel in every department of your studies, be it maths, science, etc. enjoy.

Well it is sort of similar to being in the American military. I am pretty sure you have to be American. You also have to pass tons and tons of physical tests- you have to be very healthy and strong, in perfect shape. You also have to know a lot about science and math, and definitely have a good education. It is all very competitive, though, at least if you are intending to actually go into space. Only a few people are actually sent up.
