on the surface russia and china appear to be improving diplomatic relations with each other, including a recent massive joint military exercise but there still seems to be tensions. do you think it is likely they will become closely allied or do you think the old wariness will always be there? and what do you think would be the result if they did? i'd especially like to hear from anyone that is from russia or china (although i think mylot is banned in china). here's the link (it's a respectable newspaper, this time a liberal one) http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/aug/02/china-russia-relationship

it may appear like china and russia are wary of their growing economic and military power, but they are traditionally and up to now allies in many sense and respects. in many UN security council voting, china and russia find themselves almost always on the same side. this is to counter the power of the US and the western blocs in the council. everyone wants a piece of china's ever growing economy hile the rest of the world except india is in economic recession or contraction.

i think that's true. i also think the only thing that can be said in favour of the governments these two countries have (which i think are both awful) is that it's preventing there being just one superpower.
