Hi all, just turned on the laptop and it is making the most horrid noise (sound is turned off) as if it's really struggling to work. Any ideas before it packs up on me(not too technical please). I've checked the lead is in properly by the way. Thanks in advance.

I think there are two probability, first probability is the hard disk and second is the processor's fan. Like a car, hard disk is like the computer's piston and processor's fan is like the radiator fan. It's not about the electricity I think, it's beyond common user like us can fix that problem, you must bring your laptop to the service center to avoid worst case, laptop is harder to fix than ordinary desktop pc, so when you find out some problems on your laptop don't try to fix it by yourself, you need go to the service center.

Hi flaredust, thanks for the speedy responses. The chap who checks the problems normally is on holiday, there's no way I'd try to fix it myself. Wondering though as you said the fan if it's anything to do with the crazy heat. It's gone quiet now though thank goodness, it was for about the first 15 minutes when I first turned it on.

Yeah, probably the fan rotation creating that noise, sometimes I find my pc also make that noise and when I check inside it's from the fan. Usually when the sound comes out I try to turning off my pc, put replug all cables inside my pc and turn it on again, and then the sound go away. I hope your laptop problems not as complicated as you think, but just in case you should contact the mechanic and tell them your problems detail.

Hi flaredust, the sound has gone for now, maybe it was just struggling to cope with the heat. I don't want to take it up to town to have it looked at as the standard answer there is 'you need a new motherboard.'

Hope it restarted. If it doesn't pls get a alternative for we cannot miss you long here. Is that OK? I am sorry, I am not much of a geek and I haven't experienced this ever. Keep restarting for with electronics we never know what's going to work and when! Good luck!

Morning mimpi, how sweet, hadn't realised I'd be missed. I am so totally un geek like it's not true and would be lost if the thing packed up on me and repairs cost the earth out here, especially on laptops. It's stopped now, it could be it struggled to get going when I first turned it on so now I'll be afraid to turn it off again
