I have been a homemaker but I could also evolve a very successful and satisfactory freelancing career path for myself.I chose teaching and this was definitely based on my inherent strength, aptitude and academic qualifications. Now I have relocated but I still keep writing and this is also according to my aptitude and strengths. Have you had the satisfaction that your career is best suited to your strengths?or have you tried to strengthen your existing skills according to the demands of your job? Or are you bored and are looking for a desperate change or are you just yearning that things change some day? Please do share your views and thanks in advance.

no, my career has been thrust upon me rather than take into consideration my aptitude and strength. Academically, my interest always lay in history and English…I wanted to pursue these in higher studies but my parents thought that pursuing science would be better so I pursued science in college. Thereafter, my mother who was a secretary herself, got me inducted to a secretarial course in the hope that it would better my chances of a good job. Well, nothing of that sort happened either…I am working but not as a scientist nor a secretary but rather as an office assistant, doing all and sundry work for everybody around me.

Oh that is sad indeed! Try and attempt some creative writing or even revive your interest in history during your spare time and write articles for AC. This is what happens when parents try to choose the children's career for THanks for the participation.

"thrust upon" i could identify with that. I followed my mother's advice against my will but it turned out to be the best for me!

I think I have totally wrecked my life for choosing a wrong discipline of studies in college. I end up in multiple jobs from being an executive secretary, lecturer and finally a business lady. My personal best did not shine on all the jobs that I held. I was confused and unsure what I wanted when I was in my prime age. I discovered that I have a penchant for cooking/baking and writing. I could have ended up being a chef if my parents were not adamant in wanting me to have a noble and respectable career. My dad was an auditor in the Government and he insisted that I become an accountant or a lawyer but non of these careers strike the right code with me. I did have my own restaurant running for a few years but decided to quit to take over this present business from my dad who has gone to eternal rest. Well, am quite happy running this pub because I have a flair aptitude in public relations. But my passion for cooking and baking still hold strong in me but now I cannot fully practice my inborn talents and only satisfy myself writing it out in blog all the delicious cakes that I love and sharing it to the world outside.

Once again it becomes a case of satisfying your parents primarily. This ends up in your slight dissatisfaction. However, it is commendable thta you write out your recipes and your children and husband would be the beneficiaries of your culinary skills Zandi. That is very satisfying.

hi wanglian, welcome to mylot. That is exactly what I did for the years that I worked, learning to like my job. It is quite stressful to stay put in a career that is against my will. But I managed to slip in something that I liked by opening my own eatery just to get away from the stress. For many years I was in a situation where I am under employed while I run my business. Actually it is a blessing in disguise to work against the tide as it makes me acquire something beyond my expectations.

yes, often, what we do is not what we enjoy best, because the reality is cruel, but we can try our best to like the job, and at the same time,we can do things that we love at the spare time.

I am a self employed design consultant (SOHO) and I took this choice based on my own aptitude and strengths (and weaknesses too!). I am quite satisfied with my career. But it looks my customers are bored with me and are looking for a desperate change and are yearning that things change some day dealing with me!!

The weakness you have referred to must obviously be your independence and also refusal to listen to an employer. That is why you have chosen to be your own master. If your customers are bored I am sure you would make efforts to alleviate them of that boredom. When we are on our own we still feel answereable to our own selves isn't it? Thanks for sharing your views .

I believe that you must not rely on your strengths alone. For me, i would love to have a job where i enjoy, the one that won't bore me. In that way, I would be able to work without regrets and worries.

Hello Kalav56, I have to say yes, I did choose my career based on my strenghts. I chose a career in education because I have alway being an energetic positve responder the young children. I enjoy motivating them with entertaining and creative ways to learn. I have to say that I really enjoy my job an elementary school teacher. I am presently working on my master degree in education. I do have other strengths such as canvas painting. I never purchase art for my home because of this talents, but I enjoy teaching more than I enjoy painting.

I have had a love of writing since I was a child and was determined to pursue my passion with a degree in journalism until we moved from Italy to Australia and I had to learn English and a brand new way of life. As the years passed I put my passions on the back burner and wasted a lot of time in jobs I did not enjoy until I became a stay at home mother and after five years at home it was time to work again; it was then that I decided to finally do what I dreamed and did a course in freelance journalism and had a few pieces published here and there. Aside from my loved ones there are two things I love in this life and they are writing/reading and animals; careers in either field would mean utilising my best points. I am still writing, the money is not great but I feel a lot more satisfied than ever before.

Hi Kala It is a great post. Well it was a deliberate action on my part to chose accounting as my career because i knew that medicine was not my cup of tea as the very thought of blood and injury make me feel nauseated. I am glad that i had done remarkably well in whatever i had chosen.I always topped the university and accounting subjects were just my passion and i found them very interesting. After i graduated from my college my family supported me and i enrolled myself for professional degree of C.A.and completed it. Before marriage i worked as an accounts officer in a real estate company and i was given the best employee award for three years.I just loved my job.My interests became my strength and on professional front i became very confident and strong . After marriage i had to take up a job and my previous employer arranged for me the job i am doing .I got highest increments during my very first year.I am more than happy that professionally i have achieved so much love, respect and encouragement.

My career path is not what i have studied in college. It was completely different from the course i have taken but there's no regret, i am happy with what i do now. I applied to a government agency just to satisfy my mother and because i was also already discouraged applying in the offices where i thought my educational qualification is best suited. Little did i know that i'll find my niche here. I did not even recognize the strength that emanated within me but my superiors noticed the potential. And it is in this career that i met my husband. We have the same way of running an office, the same principles, we have the same wavelength and we have the same concern for the present financial situation of our company. We may be facing difficulties in our careers now due to global crisis and we are not even at that retireable age yet to safe we are safe, but the fact that both of us have our demanding and challenging careers thrusted upon us and at the same time being trusted with the responsibilities, we hope the strength that lies within us contribute something for the good of the company and the people that we work for.

Thank you, kalav, for starting this discussion because it just made me even more concerned with life in general. Not just our life as a couple having our bread and butter and other benefits that we receive from the company but also the lives of our colleagues who are in the same predicament and are less fortunate than us! The casual, contractual employees who are facing possible termination due to lack of funds... it's hard but we just continue praying and hoping for the best...

Hi kalav, I chose my career based on my interest and skills, and I am quite happy with what I have accomplished. But I know that there is still a room for improvement and that life is a continuous learning, and as such I take advantage of every opportunity that will add to my knowledge and enhance my skills. My discovery of myLot has made me rekindle my passion for writing, something I thought I've lost and has gone forever. It's like I'm at square one again, but it's okay because I like the view right here at the starting point. Have a good day!

The most important thing to choose a career is start from something you enjoy doing. You are a graduate of economics majoring in accounting, but you don`t like working with numbers so don`t force yourself!I don`t like working behind the desk all the time that`s why i don`t work as a secretary:)I am a sociology graduate and i have been an English teacher for almost 6 years..Of course,i still want to teach social science in schools but so far i always get projects as English teacher so enjoy it!I meet lots of people from different background as i teach in different places (mostly offices)so you`ll know how to handle people, solve problems at work..I enjoy it and i still keep on learning to improve my skills as well.. Secondly, choose a career when you can develop your skill..of course you don`t want to get stuck, right? If you can enjoy what you do and you feel comfortable and motivated to develop yourself, then it`s perfect

The carrer I chose when I finished school was not really me (I realize that now). Though I was always interested in psychology and kids...I didn't think of it as a career option while I was growing up. This, despite the fact that I took an aptitude test in high school! Not that it was of much help because the result of the test was that I could be any career I chose except anything to do with mechanical field. Coming from a family of engineers and being relatively good at Math, I followed in the same line. I wasn't bad at what I did...but I now realize that wasn't what I REALLY was...if you know what I mean. Now, that I am with little children, it feels like I am home and this is what I CAN do. I'm satisfied and happy. I don't want to make the same mistake for my children. Though the older one is academically bright, I can see that his inherent strength is in music and drawing...and I am giving him full encouragement to take either one up as a career. The younger one is too young for me to decide now...but I can see he is interested in music and sports.

First of all I thank you for being sweet enough to pop in to give life to some old discussion of mine SANDHYA and secondly for the great response. How right you are when you say that you should do things according to your aptitude! However, better late than never and today you have found your satisfaction.I am very happy for you.Regarding your children also , I am sure they woudl turn out well if properly nurtured. It takes alot of effort to channelise theirs in the proper direction.

I chose my career based on being hired by the first legitimate company that offered me a job, but through that process I discovered strengths and interests that I did not know I had, wish I had discovered a long time ago before my health got to where it is now. When I was still a student,I thought i can rely on my strength, because I did believe that to use my strength in work will make people and myself see how well I could perform my task. But things was just totally different after I got to work since years ago,you can not only rely on what you have learnt,it is not practical,as you got to find a career that you finally find the most interesting and suitable for you. So,now,I am not an English teacher.Instead,I am a sale.
