English language learners on Mylot: Ask for help if you want. Update English.

Hi all, I admire the people here who are trying to improve their English language skills and might like a little help. If you are posting and not sure of your English would you appreciate someone re-writing exactly what you wrote? I thought maybe if there was some phrase used to ask for help, your comments or posts could be re-written for you underneath your posting in exact spelling and grammar usage. I'm sure many of us would help whereas I wouldn't like to correct unless I was asked. I've suggested in my title 'Update English' as a key so that when it is written by you and seen we know to offer help. What do you think? Would you like to be helped / would you be happy to help?

Hi Thea! This is a very good idea, in my opinion, and many users would be happy for some help I'm sure. What I'm not sure about is whether it could be implemented or not without it looking as though whoever updated the English was not copying a post. Some users might then post foreign words too but that would cause posts tobe deleted. I suggest you contact myLot just to suggest your idea and ask them if they would have anything for or against it. Then keep us informed!

That is part of my fear too Sandra I think if Thea contacts the powers that be they will inform one way or the other though so I hope she does contact them

Hi Mys, I have duly contacted the powers that be and am awaiting a response, I wish I'd thought to do this before I posted the discussion. The idea is not for people to increase their posts by helping and maybe the receipient could add the words 'help recived' when the corrections have been posted to help them. I think that the message is clear that the help is being offered in for the English language and not for general translation services. It definitely would not be enough, if given the all clear, for this discussion to be the only way to see it which is why I've sent a few p.m.s about it as the idea would need spreading to a wider audience, perhaps the ones who would like help could p.m. their friends who would also like help. For now I'll wait to hear back from the powers as they might just scupper the idea.

Good point, Mysd. I hope we can get around it, as it would certainly help to forge stronger community bonds on here. I'm just a little afraid that some members will see it as an earning opportunity rather than a chance to help fellow members, and this could cause problems for everyone. It's worth a go, though.

Hi pppash, you may not be an English speaker but you expressed your thoughts in a very clear and understandable way. Well done for writing your longest comment too. The more you write on here the more confident you will become in your English usage so keep at it. I hope too that Mylot will take my suggestion and offer something for us to help each other.

This is very good topic for English learners as a second language. I'd be happy to learn from my mistake correcting from some one else. Because I think we are human or to err is human. Some one raises my mistake once and I remember longer than I memorize it by myself .

Hi phon4u, you are so right about remembering the corrections, I never forget the man in the petrol station correcting my use of the gender of 'in' which really helped me a lot as I'd probably still be doing it today otherwise. Most of my friends don't correct me when they should, they are just happy that I am at least trying to master the complexities of their extremely difficult language.

Good afternoon, Thea. What a great idea! I often feel as if I'd like to correct someone's English, but to do it without being asked implies criticism, so I always hold back. Those of us for whom English is a first language should be humbled by the attempts of others to come to grips with our far from straightforward mother tongue. However, it could be seen as a 'gravy train' option for members with dollar signs in their eyes, so it could prove difficult in practice. It's probably something that may have to be run past admin first, although you can definitely count me in on this brilliant idea.

Hello Sandra, it's good to see you back, missed the voice of reason. I've contacted the powers that be now to see if it is ok to promote this idea and made it clear it's not a gravy train idea, only one correction to be made to each who asks for help. I will wait and see if it is given the go ahead then advise if it's ok to spread the word.

Hi andreshimp, it is great that you want to improve your English but it looks pretty good to me as it is. I think Hiccup has the right idea of posting the words either at the beginning of the introduction to a topic if you are starting the topic, or if you are responding to put it right at the beginning of your response.

"update English" yes i would definitely add "update English" at the beginning of every comment and discussion topics hereafter. so the idea is anyone who finds a mistake in my English would correct me, right.. but that should be distinct from the main topic. probably you could write the phrases inside brackets. my English may not be too bad.. i want to take it to the level where i can write articles. i should be able to write down my thoughts spontaneously. i spend more time writing comments and discussions. so i hope this method helps me.. i m so excited to learn.. thank you so very much!

"Update English" hello hiccup, it was so sweet of you to say, that my English is not bad. im glad. i want to write my thoughts and express it in good English. Right now i think that there is no spontaneity. i actually stop and think a lot to frame a sentence to express what i really feel, especially in some serious discussion. i have so many thoughts that i don't know how to exhibit. English is my favorite language. so i can't afford to make any mistakes. i don't want to be bad at it. i really want to be an excellent writer. i m hoping that this idea would help me and others as well. thanks so much!

Hi thea, I am so surprise that you admired me. One of the main thing I can get here is improving my English. Maybe not on my grammar or speech, but at least vocabulary. I rarely (if I ever had) use English in my communication. I only used it if I had to have a communication with tourist or some Malaysian that didn't know how to speak Malay. I use dictionary sometimes here. I try to find a grammar correction but not avail. My grammar is the worst I think. So, if there is anybody want to help me, I appreciate it. Happy mylotting and have a nice day. ps I would appreciate if you could correcting my error here.

Tenses my friend. I usually use the wrong one in Greek but my main struggle is with cases, so I know what it's like which is why I thought of this idea. You didn't mention where the admiration was supposed to come from!!

Hi akuler, that sounds very misleading, I may have said something nice but where exactly did I state my admiration for you.. Your English is very good and clear and hardly needs correcting but if Mylot give their approval to this idea then we can get on and promote it. You, for example, could spread the word to friends on here who are English language learners. P.S. I would appreciate it if you could correct my errors here.

Thanks for that ps. That is what am I talking about. I always confused with this past, present and future tense and the correct word to used. English Language never been my favorite subject during my school days. Too late to regret it.

Yes, you have a very good idea for people whose mother's tongue is not English. I have read people saying that they come to mylot to learn English. Your idea might help those who are genuinely interested in writing English correctly and at the same time improving their command of this English. My long residence in mylot has greatly improved my English too. Mind you, am a fast learner and quickly grasp the way the native speakers write and that is the reason why am very confident when I create and post a discussion. People should not shy away from getting the tips from others especially those who are proficient in this language.

I hope mylot will give you the green light to implement your good ideas. I know they are some people who find it difficult to write in proper English. It is a pity they can't put in writing the many ideas they have simply because they are handicap in this language. I come across people who write with direct translation from their language which distort the whole discussions. English is not my mother's tongue but I feel very much at home in this language. It is widely spoken in my home and amongst my friends.

Hi zandi, you suprise me that you are using English as a second language, your usage is excellent. Having posted this idea I then wondered if it was okay to actually do this so am now waiting an answer from Mylot to make sure they have no problem with it before promoting it further.

Hi zandi, on reflection I think it would be better if mylot themselves could implement something like this, but I have contacted them with the idea. This way isn't going to reach enough people and they would need to build in some guidelines to stop abuses.

Hi friend Theo. English is a mother tongue language. I admire all the people on My Lot that are writing in English when they use a different language at home. My Lot is a great place to improve written English. There are members from all different English speaking countries. Although I am from England I try to remember all the American terms as My Lot comes from the USA. I wouldn't want to correct anyone's English unless he or she asked for help. In that case I would be delighted to assist them. I am learning Spanish and so I know what is like to be keen on learning a foreign language. I will be here if you need any help.

Hi Maximax, thanks for your support my friend. With your many travels to foreign lands I knew this would appeal to you as I bet you are always asking for help when there, English can only get you so far. I personally couldn't change to American lingo on here and certainly wouldn't adapt my spelling, but have been known to use the American word for a food when neceessary. I often think English language learners must be running for their dictonaries when words like colour come up with the American spelling. Thanks again for your support, hopefully if Mylot see the support they will introduce something from the suggestion, one discussion alone would not reach enough people.

Well I think it's a great idea and often see discussions which in themselves are good but are poorly worded. I just hope that the myLot admin can see past the obvious negative of duplicate responses and that it will in fact benefit myLot by making the community more close knit but also that it will help with getting myLot discussions to appear higher up in the search engines.

Just to answer your off topic moment. Sadly Deano passed away back in 1995, dieing from lung cancer and emphysema which knowing how he lived is not such a surprise. But still so, he is sadly missed.

that's ok. by me as long as the person is better than I am. I know i can speak English and type English but i it's not enough. i still have a few to learn. and there's still some parts of speaking English that I still don't understand. .

Hi LetranKnight, that is a really valid point which you raise; just because some of us have English as our first language does not mean that it is always used properly. There are many errors of spelling which crop up time after time (I don't mean the odd typo which we are all guilty of), but I am amazed at how many confuse 'their' and 'there', and 'hear' and 'here', on a totally regular basis. I have noticed that those with English as a second language do not make these simple mistakes as often but are more likely to have issues with grammar.

Hi cody, good to hear from you. I am just waiting to see if Mylot will allow this to go ahead - if they do all you'll need to type next to your post is 'update English' and hopefully someone will help you to improve. Your English appears just fine already, only a little correction needed. So here is the first correction for you. "I am an English learner" not a. "I am not quite sure of words and phrases." Just two words in the wrong order. Hope that helped and that Mylot will give the go ahead.

Hi cody, it is great to see appreciation for this idea. I am now waiting, for how long I don't know, for mylots approval or hopefully for them to implement this idea. I take all the help I can get in my second language learning and often learn from stupid mistakes I make. Good luck with your own language improvements.

Hi vanessa, welcome to mylot and glad to hear that you are pleased by this idea of lending a hand to second language users. I actually have to make sure it is approved by Mylot before taking it any further. Your language skills seem fine but hopefully you'll be able to ask for help if you need it (if Mylot say yes.)

Hahaha, I'm the number one on your lists but I'm not shy/afraid to express myself even though my English construction is worst. Be confident on what I say as long as I express myself and delivering the right thought to the reader. It is alright to have help.

Hello eikonsamala, I am hoping that Mylot will allow this help, I have contacted them in the hope that something can be set up, I suppose it may depend on rules and things. Also the idea will need supporting by people who would like a little help and those who would be happy to help out in return. So I am waiting for now. Your English usage is clear and understandable, just a couple of small errors. With the language I am learning I find I often remember to use something correctly after I have been corrected. I appreciate being corrected in my use of that language but wouldn't like to correct others without knowing they would welcome it.

Hi yugasini, I am really glad that you like the idea. First we need Mylots approval which I am waiting for, I should have asked them before posting this. Then we need people who would like help to support the idea, and the same support from people who would like to help. It is possible Mylot will refer to this discussion when considering so why not help for now by passing the word around, perhaps p.m. friends here who would also be interested in helping or receiving help. Hi leprosa, I thought it was a good idea then of course once I'd posted it I wondered if it would actually be allowed, I hope it will as some people might appreciate a helping word or two. Good to hear you're learning two languages, if there was a Greek mylot it would probably help me if I had the confidence to try to use it.
