Why do you go to the gym? Is it really necessary?

There are many ways to exercise but some prefer to spend money by going to the gym regularly. My bro-in-law is one such person; he injured his thigh recently when a substitute trainer pushed my bro-in-law beyond his capability. The result was a visit to the doctor, a 2-day sick leave, and the pain of walking and driving with an injured thigh muscle. And having a personal instructor isn't free. I just wonder if any of you have had experience like this. I also wonder why do people go to the gym when they could do free exercise routines at home or in the park?

I would prefer learning exercises from an instructor at a gym or a yoga center because this way i learn it directly from the expert. Another thing is that when i pay somebody i would maintain regularity on it. If it was free or when i perform exercises at home, there is no specific time or i may even skip it for a day or two. I think your BIL should complain about this instructor to the gym's management and get the medical expenses met by them.

Thanks divkris for your input. Ya it is indeed true that when you spend money, you'll make sure that you benefit from it. It's just a pity that it takes spending money to keep ourselves fit - i mean no offense to you or anyone who goes to the gym, but it would be great if we could just do exercise regularly without using money as the motivating factor :) Cheers!

Hi kevchua, Sorry to hear about your brother in law, I also experienced the same thing On my previous gym, I got pain in my back due to a wrong position during lifting That time my trainer didn't tell or educate me about the right position, or anything about exercising After that I changed gym and get a new trainer My present trainer is very reliable He taught me about the right position, diet and food combining, variations in exercising, and lots more Your brother in laws trainer should have discussed first before starting to workout, Well that's how I used to do My trainer always asked me whether I can handle the weight or not If I cannot take it, he'll stop it at once Maybe your brother in law should give complaints first, hopefully it will make his trainer improve his service Then get a new trainer Hope that this experience didn't make your brother in laws stop going to gym.. :) Get well soon, hehee Thanks !!

Thanks unuzzz :) Yes, my bro-in-law did go and see the management later, but not sure what the outcome is. I'm sure he's alright by now. That trainer was a substitute, and I guess he is not properly trained. It's not going to stop by bro-in-law from attending the gym at all. As for me, I'd stick to walking up the stairs, getting some sunlight, sweat a bit. :) Cheers!

I also have the same experience in a gym before. I have tried going to the gym two years ago because I gained a lot of excess weight (10 kgs) which is not acceptable to me. I got a membership with Fitness First, I also got a personal trainor which are very expensive. I went to the gym for 2 weeks only, I also got some bruises on my thighs for using the gym equipment. My bf thought somebody mauled me because of those bruises. I stopped going to the gym ever since then and I have concentrated on doing yoga and aerobics at home instead. I lost my excess weight in 3 months with daily exercises and a balanced diet. I never had bruises or any injury when I was exercising at home and its way much cheaper.

Yeah, thats whats hard about being in a gym...you have to trust your health to someone else. I do hope your brother in law is doing well now.

Hi thanks for your concern. I believe he's still recovering from that injury. It's getting better, though. Yeah, it's risky letting others take care of your physical health especially if they're not properly trained.

Speaking for myself, going to the gym inspires me to exercise. At home, I have too many other things to do, cleaning, cooking, family time. So I don't exercise. I am a frugal person, so I understand the monetary factor of at home exercise. But I need the extra push and leaving the house to accomplish it.

hi....sounds you are freaky about the gym concept...the incident you shared is a very pathetic one but a very true one ...very sadly..the incident u shared is very painful..i think that u cannot judge the all trainer by like this he may be a nub in this field or its completely a mishap....but i think that gym is not so harmful.i personally go to gym and have a good trainer ....so don't keep any hard feelings about gym....i also free hand exercise....no hard felling of that........OK

Well, I wasn't judging any trainer actually. I merely wanted to point out if it is necessary for someone to exercise at the gym. I agree that the gym is not a harmful place to exercise provided the trainers are properly trained. Again, the question is - unless you want to have a six packs or plenty of meat - is it necessary to exercise in the gym if you merely want to lose weight or get your heart some exercise? Thanks for your response. No hard feelings at all.

Well I use to go to the gym for obvious reasons to stay in shape, and becuse most reputable gyms have the latest equipment, and I cant afford to buy all those expinsive exercise devices myself so for me its simpler to just pay for a gym membership, though lately I've had to tighten my fanatical belt so to speak, thats why I canceled my membership temperley and I now exercise and home the old fashioned way without exercise devices.

When I used to work and be able to support the membership in the fitness centre, I bought the membership and went to do exercise regularly. The reasona why I joined not just because for exercising because I do biking, swimming and running as well at home. It is because I like the weight mahcines that I don't have at home, besides that, I like to have the steam room and sauna room at the futness center, it isvery very nice to be inthem and feel like it flushes out the dirt in my body!

it depends upon the pirpose if u want to remain healthy and fit then theres no need to go to the gym but if u want to build muscles and have a huge body u need to do wewight traing then the gym is required..........but some ppl go the gym coz it gives them the motivation to work out.........so the trainer helps u to do ur workuout in a more regular and effective manner.........but if ur heathy then u could just walk or take a rn in the park tht will do it fr u.........

going to gym seems to be a trend nowadays with the younger generation. My brother is a frequent gym visitor too, and we kept reminding him on the extend of his exercise. He enjoyed some classes conducted by the gym centre, which at least he says it's worth it.. and of course, he chooses the gym that is near our house, so, it motivates him to go instead of just wasting it.. some people will choose to be in close with their work area too.. It's a lot of difference to do exercise in gym, and the first will be the environment and 'eye washing' time too! In a gym, it's more comfy and relax than you jog in the park exposing yourself inhaling the 'hazed' air, and the rough path too.. At least in a gym, you can bath once you are done with it, and feel fresh over again immediately.. and, sorry to hear your BIL being 'tortured' into such a pain..

I believe its necessary to keep fit and lead a healthy and active lifestyle but that one doesn't necessarily have to join a gym to get fit. It all depends on the individual, many people find joining a gym and working out with other people and a personal trainer helps them keep motivated while many others join a gym and hardly turn up and waste alot of money. Personally I don't like the confinement of the gym and enjoy running, cycling, skipping .. all exercises I can do on my own out in the fresh air. After a long day nothing is better than getting some fresh air. Then to tone I do pilates in my own living room. Many of my friends and family members who are members of gyms wonder how I lost so much weight without going to a gym and some who attend their local gym 4-5 days a week aren't seeing the results for the time and effor that they put in. A few years back I eat healthy and joined a gym and put on a few kilos, not as added muscle but because I was doing the wrong exercises for my body. Each person will find some exercises are far more effective for their body than others.

there's really no need to go to the gym if you have exercise equipment at home or you prefer to do your exercises outdoors, but for me, the difference is motivation. I feel I should go to the gym because I paid for it and it also has different kind of exercises machine that you can choose from.

I personally go to my gym every other day for weight lifting. While there are a wide variety of very effective exercises that do not require equipment, there is no better way to gain a lot of muscle mass than lifting weights. However, I also believe that some people go the gym way too often for exercises they could be doing for free, AKA swimming, jogging, or biking. I myself use a mixture of lifting weight and body weight exercises at my home.

I go to the gym only to work my way back up. Lately though it has been faultering due to my busy schedule and limited time. My goal is to work my way back up to where I use to be then start waking up in the morning for a quick jog. I can't do that though without hurting or being out of breath. So I go to the gym to get back in shape. Which might sound weird or not make any sense. At our gym no one instructs you or coaches you. Its all up to you. You push as hard as you believe you can. I always say one more minute and it helps.

hello there kevchua and good day! i do go to the gym because besides being so busy in work 8 hours a day, after work is the only time i could give myself to. i am always early for work so free exercise is not a very good idea for me. and if ill do it at home, i guess i will always end up so tired to do it. lol! going to the gym is very good but having a substitute trainer is a big no-no, specially if he/she dont know how to really do it. our trainer has no fee so its really nice to have one. and you know what he did to your bro-in-law is not the right thing. because putting someone beyond what he can do is not right. totally not right. thats not what my trainer told me. so i hope he would be aware of it. jhelai

I prefer to use my treadmill here back home or simply just walk 2 kilometers from my house to different place in my subdivision. or simply do my house choirs. but i prefer to walk because it's more relaxing than anything else.

Well am so sorry about what happened to your brother. Wish him a quick recovery. I go to the gym often but i prefer jogging and doing some other things.

Some people find it necessary to go to the gym, especially if they have an image to maintain - like actors and actresses, models and other celebrities. But since, Im just a regular person, well- i really don't have that much use for the gym. I like my body just the way it is. To keep me healthy, i eat right, drink lots of water and sometimes I do some exercise routines at the comfort of my own home. It works for me, so I'm gonna keep it that way. ;)
