Do you visit the doctor if you feel unwell for any reason or try home remedies?

Some people have the habit of running to the doctor for even common cold, it depends on how severe the attack is actually, I try applying some balms, inhaling steam etc. only if it persists and does not stop I visit the doctor, I usually wait and try all possible ways before I visit the doctor. I do not mean to say that I try all odd methods, I try only the ones that are generally done in some household before going to the doctor. Most of the time it has worked out for me. Do you also try home remedies or try eating or applying medicines already available at home?

I reallly hate going to the doctors, so i try and only go when absolutley neccissary. I am certainly not one to call up and make an apointment just because i have a bad cold, or a stomach bug, but i am smart enough to know that if it seems to be really hanging on in the case of a cold, or geting far worse with feavers etc...or if my stomach bug turns into me vomiting for more than one 24 hour period, i will go to see a dr. Usually the ER as actually calling my doctore to make an appointment won't get me into see them for at least a week, and by then well, i'll either be on deaths door or better *lol*

I also forgot to add that with the type of medical insurance i have, i try not to go unless needed. I have a health fund account type plan, where i have a certain amount of money in an account that i can basicly use as i see fit for my health care..and once that is used up i have to pay a goodsized deductible out of pocket before they will start paying like 80% and i only have to pay the other 20%. I have had this type of insurance for a few years now, and have never once gone over the amount i am limited to in a year, and what ever i don't use up rolls over and gets added to the next years balance.

Good that you have a medical insurance but do take care and just do not avoid going to doctor if it is necessary, you have to wait may be even after an appointment but it is the case everywhere, it shows he is a good doctor. Thanks for your response, have a good day & a good health.

That is a very un-true statement that you just made.....after visiting the doctor is a good way to use home remedies, so you know what you are trying to fix. if i did not go to the doctor i would not have know that my blood pressure was high. but i treated it my self with home remedies, and got it under control with out taking prescription medications. When i was having chest pains if i did not go to the doctor for the reason, i would not have known that the reason was because my system was depleting to much potassium, because of the amount of water that i was drinking, so i found out that i need to supplement with Magnesium/Potassium. I also found out that i was diabetic....and have been treating it naturally, without insulin, or the pills that they wanted me to take. How are you going to know what to treat naturally if you do not see a doctor, to find out what the exact problem is. for instance with the chest pains if i had not gone to the doctor i would have just assumed that i was my heart, and i would have been trying to treat the wrong thing. It is always best to visit the doctor or other health professional before you try treating your self for any thing. I am very big on taking the natural route to treat anything, but their is also a place for the profesinols

I would only go to the doctor only if it is really something that I could not handle. But if I only feel colds or minor things, I would just drink lots of water or take over the counter medicines. I think that is safe enough.

well, it depends on what is wrong. here where i live we have universal health care (which means the same healthcare for everyonen no matter what) we can go to the doctors anytime we want, however, i dont run to the doctors at the first sign of a sniffle, i generally tend to wait TOO long if i am sick before going to the doctors!

Yup, I try to avoid the doctor as much as possible. If it's a headache, fever or stomachache, I would take some painkillers and sleep it off. Sometimes it works. If the fever persists too long, even after painkillers or herbal medications, then I would see the doctor.

I don't go to doctor for each and everything. I will try home remedies and if it cold or slight fever I will get paracetamol tablets. If it is throat pain, I gargle salt water etc. The first reason why I don't go to hospitals is that I am scared of injection. I am ebarassed to say that at this age, but it is truth. Last month I felt that I have problem with thyroid gland. At that time I went to hospital.

Oh! We have some or the other sickness hitting one of the family member so we have a reasonable knowledge of which medicine works for what - LOL - my mom's good at it too and people refer to her as a family doctor just to pull her leg So, we mostly try home remedies and self-medication most of the time, but we do visit the doctor if the home remedies fail in the first instance

Being an at-home mom and having only his income to support the 4 of us, I try any and every home remedy that I can & no to be for whatever that particular medical issue happens to be. For one, insurance is so costly and then you still have the co-pays. It is very difficult to be able to make ends meet on a fixed income and still be able to carry health insurance and pay co-pays. Home remedies, pending on the ailment, seem to work well for most things. If a situation persists and nothing seems to work, then I do go to the doctor.

Thanks for your response, I like your approach, if home remedy works well and it is not a serious ailment nothing wrong following it. Have a good day.

hi yogambal_64, my dear freind, i dont go to doctor when i am having cold or cough or any simple infection. at that time i try home remedies. but sometimes there is like a flu , a severe infection going on or any fever that is dangerous , then obviously, i will go. like now a days there is this Swine flu going on. so now if i feel unwell, i will definately go and get myself checked. i believe in home remedies and to a certain extent they work perfectly. and then i also believe in naturopathy and homeopathy. so before going to the doctor i try the best what i can do .

Dear freind I have the same habit. I never go to the doctor immediately for small things. Even for my children i try out home remeides first and then according to severity i consult a doctor. For common cold and cough i try out ginger juice , eucalyptus oil, turmeric milk steaming etc. and it definately goes with that.

doctors pay is very expensive.. as long as i can manage, i just ask my brother, since his a nurse, of what will i take then i will tell him that im not feeling well.. if he will tell me to go to the doctor for consultation then thats the only time i go there.. besides, in our country we have our medicard as our company's great health benefit.. so we will just show them the card and the company will going to pay it.. though i know other country have it too.. thats why its so nice to be employed coz you dont have to worry if somethings bad happened to you.. though some company here didnt offer those king of benefits and i felt bad of it..
