Beginner's Luck - Has it happened to you?

Last week, we were staying with friends, and the menfolk went sea fishing for the day. One friend had never been sea fishing before - he doesn't live near the coast, so usually fishes in rivers and lakes. However, he landed the best catch of the day - a 2 kilo (4 - 5lb) sea bass, which I baked in the oven for the 5 of us the next day. Have you, or someone you know, ever experienced 'beginner's luck?'

Hi Sandra1952, In Malaga Spain a group of lads decided to play the Primitiva Lottery and they were almost broke this time. They have a sort of Band which is called "Los Pelaos", which means stoney broke. They played this one just for luck and said it was just going to be a one off and they did´nt think for one minute they were going to win. They just filled out the ticket and away and they won a huge prize so now the stoney broke lads are not or were not so broke after, Thats a beginners luck story I heard of sometime back.

That's what you call beginner's luck! I live in Spain, so perhaps I'll give that one a go. I don't usually play the lottery, as I tend to think how much can I afford to lose, rather than how much could I win.

Hello Sandra I'm sure I'll think of something more interesting later but a couple of weeks ago I had to pop out and my son who is ten didn't want to come out with me as it was so hot. He rang my mobile to ask when I was coming back and I told him I was in the car driving back and he told me he'd have a coffee waiting for me. I was a little trepadatious as he's never made coffee before and I worried he might burn himself on the brik but when I got back there was a perfect coffee waiting, even though I'd never taught him how to make one. I told him it was better than my coffee, true as it always is when someone else makes it, and much better than the cafenion coffee. Beginners luck perhaps. He's been giving me tips ever since on what I do wrong and there isn't really much to do wrong with a black Greek coffee but he has it down to a fine art. Apparently I put the brik on the wrong bit of the hotplate and don't pay enough attention to it which is why it so often boils over and makes a hideous gungy mess everywhere. So not only beginners luck with the untaught coffee but tips on how to do it better too. I'll put up with that though if he's going to continue to make the coffee.

Hello Thea. Isn't it great when beginner's luck saves us having to do chores? Long may it continue - let's hope your son doesn't start to think of making the coffee as hard work rather than a skill to show off to Mum.

Hi Sandra, well ironing was great fun TWICE, cooking omlettes is now an old trick probably never to be revived, but I'm quite prepared to resort to bribery to get the coffee in bed in the morning to continue.

I know that there is such thing as 'beginner's luck' as I have gone through this so called 'beginner's luck'. When I first came to play the jackpot machines I won about $5,000 and that was the first time I have won such a big amount in gambling but unfortunately it brought me many times to play again without luck anymore and all the money won has gone back to the machine.

Hello Zandi. You've just reminded me of the time I first went to bingo with my daughter. I took some persuading, as I was recovering from an operation, but I went and won £500! This spurred me to go regularly and, while I had some other wins, I never equalled the first one, and they've probably had it all back now!

I experienced it before the first time I went to a casino. I won a few hundred nearing one thousand. I think it is true. Once my friend who never play the lottery gave number and she won. She tried again after that and never win anymore.

Well done, both of you. Unfortunately, where money is concerned, beginner's luck can turn into a gambling problem, as people think they're going to win all the time.

I think this kind of beginner's luck always happen to those who visit the casinos.. It's always the first few times, a winning stake and let the it sink deep! Just wonder why... As for me, I have got some beginner's luck, such as times that I do job, I get to close deals (new ones) when I first started easier than when I am much into it.. therefore, I normally prefer to sell new products than having the old ones..

You're right, beginner's luck is mostly associated with gambling. However, it's good that you came across it in your line of work, and much more profitable in the long run than the casino tables. They always get their money back!

I took a friend of mine for his first fishing experience. The place where I took him has always provided me with at least 20 or more fish in a 4 hour period. When we got there I notice things were different. The water wasn't as clear and some small sandbars no longer existed. Seems they dredge the bay. Anyways it was a horrible day. Two hours passed and no fish. Even other boats which were nearby had no luck. Then when I was about to give up hope my friend got a bite. Then a hit and his first fish. Then two more. Then another one. I put my pole right next to his cause I thought he was on the right spot. He gets 2 more. I get nothing. I mean nothing not even a bite. He didn't even know how to put the bait on the hook and he catches all the fish for the day.

That must have been really annoying, but at least you have another convert to fishing! The first time my husband ever went river fishing, he caught an enormous bream which was the envy of the river bank. It's as if the fish are coming out to welcome the newbies, from what I can gather!
