I read a joke that I just don't understand

This woman was seated next to a man at a conference and they were getting along famously, flirting and laughing. Then the boring lectures started. The man wrote "#" on a napkin and the woman was thrilled! She wrote her phone number on the napkin. The man looked confused then wrote another "#" but added an "X" to the upper left hand corner. I don't understand this joke. Can someone explain it to me?

I don't think so--it was in Reader's Digest and they don't do stuff like that, very conservative!

he wanted to play tictac toe and since it looks like what we use for a number on the pc or in todays slang, she thought he was asking for her number. he was just wanting to play an old time paper game to pass the time. one puts an x in one square, then other person picks a square for an O and whoever can get 3 in a row to connect, wins the game

I feel so silly for not knowing that! It's been such a long time since I played that game that it never occurred to me!

Yep, that's it! It took a number of replies for someone to explain it. I guess we just don't play the old games enough for them to come to mind when we read something like this!

Hey, don't feel bad. I love humor and darned if I understood this joke either. I'm glad someone explained it. It makes sense that way, but I certainly didn't get it at all until someone explained it. Maybe because I always played tic-tac-toe with X's and O's, not X's and #'s. But, hey, I'm old, so things may have changed by now. Anyway, glad someone cleared it up for me as well because I was also scratching my head over this one.

My brother and I would play it all the time when we were young but it's been ages so I didn't think of it! I feel rather silly, not getting the joke! I'm 55 and should have thought of that.
