Restaurants...try new dishes? Or stick with the old favorite.

When you dine out at a restaurant, do you love trying new dishes and a variety of the meals offered? Or do you prefer to stick with your one or two favorites? Any particular reason why? Thank you. Karen

Hello Peace. It seems your friends might be more adventurous about trying new dishes than your family? I do know most of us develop a taste for our favorites at times. Be well and have a happy day. Karen

I love trying out new dishes on restaurants. However, it's different when I crave for something, when I long for a restaurant specialty or personal favorite. When I crave, then I stick to my old favorites and anticipate that I will be satisfied with the meal. But most of the time, I really prefer to try a new dish, usually out of curiosity.

Hi Arystine I am the same way. There are certain restaurants where a particular dish is so yummy, that if it's what I am craving, I will order that every time :)) Thank you for responding. Karen

When it comes to food I am not really that adventurous I stick to what I like best, I may have it done in different ways with different side dishes but usually I will order chicken! Steak I like but I do find no matter how you order it, medium, rare or well done they never get it right, I like my steak cremated, literally but the amount of times it has come onto my plate with blood in it, yuk! So I gave up. Chicken they can't really get wrong. Although having said that I tend to be more daring when I am at a chinese restaurant, where anything goes, especially with the eat as much as you like buffet, you can try everything. The only thing I don't touch is lamb or seafood (apart from prawns)

Hi Wolfie. Ack! I am with you on my steak...burn it! I hate it bloody or rare and seldom order it any more. I will cook that at home! Like you, I think buffets are the best way to go when trying new dishes. The price is the same regardless, and if you don't like the new thing, you can just get a new plate and put some old favorites on it lol. Karen

I love to try new dishes and for that reason we tend to go to ethnic restaurants when we go out. After all I can eat the same old stuff at home.

Hello Pat. Another woman who makes good sense :) You're right, at home we can always have the favorites. I, too, love trying ethnic dishes. It's always interesting to venture a bit into other cultures. Karen

Hi Karen.....we don't dine out to much but when we do I always like to order something I wouldn't make at home. I am sorta picky about what I eat as there are alot of meats and seafoods that I do not like and therefore would not want any dishes that included those ingredients. My husband and I love to eat at Applebees because I love their hot bacon dressing they have forsalads. It is to die for and I get it everytime I go there. I have tried to make the dressing myself but it just doesn't taste the same. Gosh now I have gone and made myself hungry...lol flutterby

LOL, I have not eaten out for a while, but I also love Applebee's salads. I haven't heard of the the hot bacon dressing, but when I go, I will be sure to try it. It sounds yummy! Karen

its always nice to stick to it but that is what is meant by favorite. . but i suggest that if you have extra, to try new ones. that way you can add something to your favorites. ann

Hello Ann. That makes sense. We will never broaden our list of favorite meals if we do not try something new once in a while. It's nice to add variety to our lives however we can Karen

It all depends upon the company and the mood. Most times, when you order in a restaurant, the servings are meant for two people. If my co-diner wants to be adventurous, well, then so do I. While eating alone, it depends upon my mood. A digression ..... I love cooking and trying out new things, so at home when I want to taste something new, I ask my wife to step out of the kitchen and I prepare the meal for the family-this is maybe dinnertime or weekends, once or twice a week. Happy to say that there have been no complaints so far, and by the time I am through with the cooking, there is sometimes very little of the food left for me.....

Hi Tarachand. You're right about the huge servings in restaurants. My daughter or granddaughter and I used to always split or share servings. How great that you like to cook. And the fact that the food is nearly gone by the time you get to eat, well that's a great compliment to the chef LOL. Karen

It depends on my mood and desires at the time really. I'm pretty adventurous when it comes to food and do like to try new things at every opportunity, but if there's a particular dish that I've enjoyed before, sometimes I'll go for it again. More times than not though, when I'm at a restaurant, I mix things up and go for something different each time. Fast food is where I usually stick to the things I've had before.

Hi James. I've heard of certain things, supposedly gourmet, and find them intriguing...squid, for instance...but for some reason, I have a pre-conceived notion that they will taste yuk! I do like trying new things, though, especially if they don't cost a fortune. When I'm particularly craving a favorite, I will go with that to satisfy the craving

Hi Karen! If I am going to a restaurant with my family, I would prefer to stick with the old favourite, instead of trying a new one because if my family does not like the new one, they will put the entire blame on me..........LOL!. It is, therefore, I do not take chances. If I am with my friends, then I may do some experiments and friends won't take it otherwise, if the new restaurant does not happen to be of our choice or the food/service is not so good.

Hello Deepak. I am curious. In India, does the family all eat the same thing when dining out? Is that why they would blame you for a less than tasty choice? I am learning so much of other cultures, and I love that I, too, prefer to place it safe where food and money are involved lol. Karen

If it's my first visit to that restaurant, I'd most probably order something safe like if it's an Italian restaurant I'd go for Carbonara or Spaghetti cos we know we can't go wrong with 'em. If it's a restaurant that I go to a lot, I'd try out different food items in the menu. That's what I do most of the time but sometimes of course, I stick with my favorites.

Hello Mara. It does seem we're more likely to try the new things offered by a restaurant we "know and trust." As you said, trying an unknown dish rather than a "safe" one at a new restaurant seems a bit riskier lol. Thank you for your input here. Karen

I always like to try new dishes, and I like the fact that we do not get it similar at home so better to eat them in the restaurants, even my boyfriend like this.
