1. free up harddisk space 2. run defrag 3. clean and fix reg. doing these 3 things 1 or 2 times a week will make your computer run like new 24/7

Not only that, checking and cleaning the inside of your cpu every once in a while. We never know what a little ball of accumulated dust can do.

Something else which is VERY helpful in increasing your computers speed and efficency is removing startup programs! This is done very easily by going to StartRuntype "msconfig" without quotes, go to the startup tab, and then uncheck everything. There ISN'T anything that will negatively effect your computer once unchecked. This will WORK WONDERS

So what does defrag really mean and what does it do?

defragging or defrag is short for defragmenting its a process you run on a harddrive to make it faster and smoother running

When our files are saved, especially big files, all the portion of a file is not stored in a particular place in the hard disk. They are place at different available place, i.e by breaking the files into smaller pieces. This fragments the files. Defragmentation reduces the fragments of a file and not only that it sort of physically places the fragmented pieces of a file closer to each other so that the time needed to access all the fragmented files are reduced.

Now, this is only a portion of the tutoral to mke computer run like what you call 24/7. You have listed hard disk issues. Freeing up space creates more space and defragmentation prevents bad sectors. Registry editing can be tricky sometimes and may lead to some problems. Plaese list a good software.

I agree with you with the three pointers you've mention, this would optimize the performance of the hard drive, I would just like to comment on the frequency of doing it, particularly in defraging. Drive these days have huge capacities, unless your doing a lot of file transfers and your drive's free space is at critical level then do the defrag often, otherwise it would just be an added strain on your hard drive mechanism. Defragging tools even have this analysis tool if one requires defragging or not.
