I know names for the bathroom vary by region & country so I want to know what you call the bathroom/toilet? The names that I can think of are: porcelain throne, the can, the john, rest room, bathroom, potty, toilet, lavatory....

hehe, cool subject :-P the throne, WC (water closet), men's(ladies) room, privy, "where even kings reach walking", "going to make a call". This your question reminds me of a joke: Once there was a international contest with this subject: A man finaly gets a date with the perfect woman. She is very classy, highly educated. Dating place is in a high class restaurant. At a certain moment HE must use the toilete and therefor must invent an "excuse". The winner was an englishman with the following phraze: "You will please excuse me for a minute, I must go shake hand with my best friend which I hope I will introduce you later tonight."

I was brought up to call it the loo. Other names i know are the bog, or the throne. Powder room or rest room is used out here or the 'ladies'. I cannot remember any more though. Oh yes, when I was a child we would say that we had to 'spend a penny' and that meant to use a toilet. The public toilets used to have a slot machine that you had to put a penny in before the door would open. Hence the expression.

I always just say bathroom. For my son though, I'll ask him if he has to go to the potty.

I call it the place to make mashed potatoes or the Bano. I know that's kinda gross but it's funny lol.

Hi snugglebunnies, well over here in Greece the word for bathroom can get pretty confusing. It is 'banyo' which means bathroom but it also means bath as in the thing with taps on. Most people do not have a bath in the bathroom or anywhere else come to think of it which is just as well as one is often asked if one has been for a 'banyo' by which they mean a swim even though the word for swim is a completely differnt word. So for the less enlightened they would think someone was asking them if they had had a bath.

That would be confusing. Even moreso if the contest asked the person if they had taken a bath.

I have to say the primary term used by my parents was the Ivory Throne, but I have also heard it referred to as a Lu (not sure of the spelling on that one). In my opinion, the batheroom is the bathroom. Thank you for the post and have a great day.

I am answering from my e-mail, so I can't see what other people have written. Besides the ones you have listed, I can think only of loo.

bathroom.unless you have to throw up,then it's "go driving the porcelain bus" our teachers insisted we call it "the lavatory" though, which i thought was ridiculously formal.

Bathroom is bathroom, room to shower and toilet is for that business. Usually I'll address the toilet as gents or ladies as the sound more polite. Potty sound childish, no offense to anyone using it. I don't really wear make up in the bathroom as I mirror in my bedroom so there's no way I'll be calling it make up and powder room. Besides, the light isn't bright enough. I don't feel satisfied.

I think everyone here has covered everything I've ever heard and then some. It's not really a name for the bathroom but we used to have a house guest that liked to drink and if he was in the restroom and you aked, my boyfriend would say "he's in the throne room praying to the porcelain god." Lol

WC, that's how we call it back in Indonesia. Don't ask me why, I never know the history behind that.
