PM, or profile?

I have seen several people sending out referral links in two primary ways. The first way is that they ask you to friend them, and they'll send you a message with the PTC or whatever site it is that they're telling you about in their post. The second way is telling you about the site, and then saying that the "referral link is on my profile page." This is the approach that I take as well. Which approach do you prefer? Which one do you like more? I prefer the profile link method, as it lets the discussion be able the site in question, rather than getting other myLotters to instead post a simple and rather plain, "send me the link". But, is there a benefit to doing it that way that I'm not seeing?
