What do you do when you can't sleep?

I think everyone at some point in their lives goes through unexplained insomnia, because for whatever reason you're not getting any shut eye, or it takes you hours to fall asleep. So, what do you do? What's your remedy? Some people will stay up all night until they get the "desire" to fall asleep, and in fact I have a friend who's always hyper and always seems to have sleep issues. Rather than to try to fight it, she'll just decide to exercise strenuously at 3:00AM in the morning. Some people might take a sleeping pill or two or even those relax pills.

Hi ilyzium, If i cannot sleep in the night. I will count the numbers in my mind from 1000 to 1. I mostly cannot remember that i count before 750. I will sleep before that. If i have to sleep instantly, if i take my college book with me. Even no need to read it..LOL.. i will sleep. Have a great day.

It may not be work for others. Don't concentrate on the count if you concentrate on the count you cant sleep. Just count in your mind vaguely. Also, looks like you didn't accepted my FR yet.

Ive had trouble sleeping ever since my first child arrived. I think its natural when you have a baby, to not fully fall asleep so you will hear the baby if he - she cries. For me, since the time of having my kids, ive found falling into deep sleep and sleeping all night really difficult. My youngest is now 3 yrs old, so in theory i should be sleeping better and deeper now, but im lucky if i have 1 good night sleep out of every 7 days. So what im trying now, which seems to work is to, have a hot bath every night about 3 hrs before bedtime, and then I use an aromatherapy body cream (Lavender is good), and this actually has helped me sleep better. You can also buy a lavender spray and i spray some in my room near my pillow. I was told lavender has relaxing properties, so worth a go :-)

Hi ilyzium! I have chronic insomnia so I am very familiar with having a serious sleeping disorder! If I can't sleep I will get up and usually come back and turn on the computer and mylot! Yes, that is my first thing I do! Watching tv usually doesn't work since I am not that big a tv watcher! Sometimes I will try to read a book if I am reading something really great, like now because reading does make me sleepy! But, then I have the other problem of falling asleep for an hour and waking up again! I am really trying to stay with the reading since that gives me the biggest chance of actually falling asleep where the computer will just stimulate me!

Hi opal26, I feel for you opal, because I used to suffer from insomnia so I do know what that's like. I remember the sleeping for a bit, then walking up around 3:00AM and unable to fall back asleep until 30min before it was time for me to wake up again! Apparently, for some weird reason my circadian rhythm was off and I'm guessing yours could be also. Yeah I actually had to go to a Naturopath Doctor who put me on some special vitamins and things to help my circadian rhythm switch over. I highly recommend going to one of those Doctor's btw. Reading is somewhat more relaxing over the TV, maybe you should also try a hot shower and some hot milk or something with it? Best of luck to you though - it's not easy.

Opal, I just saw that you're from NY. Well my husband is leaving on a business trip to NY (Manhattan) for a few wks and we're debating what to pack? Do you think he needs more heavier type clothes like sweaters, coats, etc. or lighter clothing?

Hi again ilzium! I don't know how long your husband is planning on being in NY but right now it is still really hot and humid! It still has been in the 80's! We have been getting alot of rain and thunderstorms. I don't think he will need heavy clothes yet. Maybe a light jacket just in case it does get a little cooler. But it's still Summer here.

Sometimes if I can't sleep I read. Reading always tires out my eyes and puts me to sleep. If I'm really desperate I may take some Nyquil to knock me out! Luckily I don't very often have a sleeping problem.

HI Jennlk84, I was kind of laughing to myself when I read your answer because I've never heard of anyone else that chugs down Nyquil besides the husband...Too funny! But yeah he swears by it! I agree that reading sometimes can really tire you out, or if you watch a boring movie, and for me it would be anything sci-fi...sorry sci-fi people, but it's just not for all of us. :(

What I do to fall asleep or back to sleep is meditate. I simply lay compfortabley and think about my breathing. Once I have my breathing completely rhythmic I then move my thoughts to my feet and start relaxing each part of my body that my mind touches. I start actually with my toes, tensing them gently then feeling all the tension melt away, then I do it for my foots, my ankles and slowly work all the way up to my face, tensing and relaxing each part. Normally I can only get to my stomach before I fall asleep, but it feels soo good to drift off to sleep like that.

Hi psycospaz, So that works for you does it? You know I don't think I really know how to meditate. I think I've sort of tried it before but I don't know if I've really done it. I try to meditate but I have a difficult time trying to clear the mind, and find myself thinking about everything. I bet that you're probably a yoga person?

26 Aug 09
Ha! I was right! I knew that you were a yoga person. I've also started doing yoga as well, well sometimes you just kind of need something to "destress" you. For the most part I sleep pretty good unlike the past. Now I just occasionally have restless nights. Also it doesn't help if you sleep next to an insomniac who constantly tosses and turns. :(

26 Aug 09
I used to practice Yoga, however not any longer. What I really discribed was more of a relaxation technique than true meditation. But I will tell you one thing: all of those thoughts are probably the true reason you are having a hard time sleeping. Learning to clear those thoughts and quiet your mind would be the best way to fall asleep. Clearing your mind is as easy as breathing. You simply just concentrate on your breaths. Think about inhaling and exhaling.. or use a mantra. Something easily repeated to drowned out the noise of your mind. Before you know it you will fall fast asleep. Now the meditation part comes in when you can control not falling asleep and guide your thoughts.

That is very interesting discussion topic. I have can't sleeping almost everyday. This happened because I was too tired to work at the factory, so that eventually I could not sleep. I never take a pill. To fill that time, I open my notebook and connect with internet. So, I update my blog and website. After that I do the job, make money online. Usualy I do every day until I can relax and sleep until morning.

Hi masteronline, I thought this would be an interesting topic because so many people have sleep issues. Would you say that you're getting enough sleep? So you're another one of those people that rely on the internet to fall asleep...Well, I admit that since I've had my Chinese Chi ring that my sleeping problems have gone away...quite amazing really. Before that though I would occasionally take some of those homeopathic relax drops.

I usually will lay there and pray and talk to God and try to drift off to sleep but if after quite a while I cannot go to sleep my body starts to ache and I have to get out of bed. I usually come to the recliner in the living room and turn on m laptop and do some work on here until I start getting sleepy and then I will go back to bed and try it again. Usually that time I will drift off to sleep. God bless you!

Since I work from home, I always find it a good time to get work done if I can't sleep. No distractions from kids or interruptions from the phone or door bell. I usually find that when I have insomnia for some reason or other...usually stress; my mind is very alert and clear and I can get work done quickly and correctly.
@ilyzium (1197)

26 Aug 09
Hi jennawash, I agree. If I really can't sleep and I've tried everything I can think of and nothing works, I will just get up and either do some cleaning around the house, or exercise. That doesn't happen too often though, but when it does that's what I do. Yes if I'm stressed out if I had a bad day at work, arguement with friend or husband, that will sometimes keep me up while I'm obsessing about my day.

hmmm i was a major insomniac for about 2 years straight, i was existing on minimal sleep about maybe 3 hours a night. i ended up existing in hyper reality and everything has this like halo around it. nothing worked for me then. i was also going through a depression which does not help in those circumstances. these days i am sleeping a little better with the help of sleep aids averaging about 5 hours or so at night. when i can't sleep i either watch tv and let it lull me to sleep. or i listen to zeepod and hope that will lull me, when all else fails i plug into the internet, or read a book.

Hey Mama_bear, (that's a cute name btw) :) Oh mama_bear I'm really sorry to hear that. I do know exactly what you're going through because I also suffered bad depression for a few yrs and so I know how that can disrupt your sleep. I hope your family & friends were supportive for you? I too was sleeping for only a few hrs so I can say that I've tried just about everything to sleep. That must have been so hard for you to work, much less do anything else I would think?! Well, I hope that your depression is a thing of the past and that you're sleeping a lot better. That's kind of why I wanted to post this topic because insomnia affects us at least some point in our lives. :)

hmmm... I'm having a problem when it comes to this. Sometimes forcing my self to sleep will cause me headache. Most often i spend more time watching television or movies at night until my eyes and mind get tired and if not i read my favourite books or just draw. These things relaxes me to have a good night sleep.

Hi simoneless, Does it matter for you if it's a boring program, as opposed to something more stimulating? I know for myself that if I'm watching something I'm really engrossed in that I won't be falling asleep anytime soon, whereas if I'm watching something sci-fi, well that will immediately put me to sleep.

If i can not fall asleep in the evening, the first choice is to turn on the radio and listen to the music. If that doesnot help, then reading books, esp linguistics books. (too difficult and boring for me) And my last choice is to lie down while doing nothing. Let the mind go where it wants.Then i will fall asleep without knowing. LOL

There are times where it's pointless for me to lay there and try to sleep. Depending on what time it is and what is going on the next day I'll either take something to help me sleep such as Benedryl or trazodone, or I'll get up and do some cleaning or write or do something else I need to catch up on.

Hello friend sehlers, Well yes sometimes you just know if it's going to be a waste of time trying to get yourself to fall asleep or not...I've heard of someone else on this site taking Benedryl, but never heard of trazodone? Is that also an allergy remedy?
@sehlers (163)

Trazodone is actually a prescription anti-anxiety medication. I have it for as needed for sleep. I don't take it if I have to get up in only a couple of hours or so even though it's never made me groggy. I'm much more inclined to take Benedryl.

Hey jules67, That's right, I've also done that before to try to fall asleep- both the hot milk and hot shower or hot bath, yeah and sometimes you'll even fall asleep there not meaning to. When you are facing insomnia, never go for sleeping pills. The best is to watch TV,surf nets,get supper or read a magazine...as time pastby, Your eyes will feel tired by itself and automatically, your body gets tired too,so that's time for you to have a rest.Try to avoid coffee at night,It will make you even harder to fall slep.

Hi shia88, You just reminded me of something I was going to mention. Every night my father drinks an entire pot of regular coffee, and amazingly is able to sleep for the entire night! How weird is that? I agree though because most of the time you will naturally fall asleep just from watching tv, surfing or reading something.

There are two things that I will do when I am unable to sleep. The first is that I will read. Typically, reading makes me tired but I don't feel like I am wasting my time. I love to read. The other thing that I will do is to lay on the couch and watch something on tv that I've DVR'd. I never watch live tv anymore, so I always have something decent to watch when I can't sleep. This is really something that is good to help me get prepared to sleep.

I have lots of trouble sleeping even though I am exhausted and my eyes are very heavy. What I do is I just lie down and do everything to get bored. Sometimes I read a book. But the best way is to study. I don't know why but when I start studying I begin to feel sleepy.

Hey girl, I've no doubt that studying would put you to sleep because let's face it, studying can be pretty boring especially reading all those technical books. Well, sometimes when you're overtired it can make falling asleep pretty difficult. That's when you should maybe try a hot shower or bath.

hi adinata, I agree about the part not to take a nap before 2:00 or even 3:00. Milk somehow can make you sleepy, yes I agree. The stress part is sometimes hard to avoid, especially if you work in a high stress job, or have other forms of stress in your life. Well, my mother take a prescription sleeping pill from her Doctor which is addictive, ok that I'd never do. I sometimes though take my homeopathic relax drops which are safe and non addictive. I admit to sometimes being a bit of a "stress basket" so sometimes I need something more than just reading, milk, hot shower, etc.
