Effective this Friday, August 28, texting while driving in Missouri is against the law. This is one law we really need. I am all for it. I visited our daughter earlier this month in New Mexico and she couldn't talk her on her phone while driving. Against the law in that part of the US. I think both are great safety measures. And yes, I do have a cell but limit my time talking while driving. Either law effective where you live?

Glad to hear this. I myself believe this practice is generally unsafe and it is a good thing that the government stepped in. The same risks are involved with drunk driving, which has cost many their lives. therefore, it is important that the government do their best to protect the law. and everyone should also take their own responsibility for thier own safety.

Now I am confused. The news is saying it's not in effect yet and had something to do with the age restrictions. I don't think texting should be age restricted. It's dangerous no matter how old the driver is if he/she is driving. Whenever it goes into effect, it will be an excellent law. It is a dangerous practice. Thanks for responding.

I agree. Age does not contribute anything since everyone is at risk of suffering from dangerous accidents when texting while driving. NO one is safe with this. So, it is better if the law provides this for everyone. Maybe, this is still in the process of litigation but I hope that it will be implemented for all.

I know cell is against the law, not sure the way it is written, may not need a new one for texting. If the law is written correctly, any use of a device that takes your attention away from your driving could be written up.

Oh yeah I agree. Our undivided attention should be focused on driving and not making or taking social calls while driving. Enough accidents without using a cell. Thanks for responding.

I think they are still trying to pass it thru where I live. It is really sad that it has to be a law. If people would just use a tiny bit of common sense we wouldn't need all these laws. my daughter texted me once while I was driving. I was in traffic and on my way to get her. In the worst way, I wanted to see her message. We had already arranged the ride and I thought maybe plans had changed. I ended up just going to get her and there she was waiting...she was just making sure I was on my way. You can't pay attention to your phone and the road at the same time. It would be no different than reading a book while driving down the road...seen that one too...scary stuff!

I have seen people reading a book while on the highway and others putting on make up or even shaving. The law goes into effect tomorrow but is only applicable to those under 21. That's a little crazy and should cover everyone texting while driving. I bet that law won't last long before everyone will be banned while driving. Thanks for responding.

Well now that is just dumb. I worked in insurance...auto claims and I'll tell you what...it is not just those that are under 21 that do those dumb things. Putting on makeup while driving was quite common.

It is a very dumb law. Texting while driving should be against the law at any age. I totally agree with you.

I really don't see how poeple can text and drive. They can't keep their eyes on the road and their phone at the same time. I don't know why people woule even sonsider it. It is wa to dangerous. I would never do it that is for sure. I don't like to drive and talk on my cell phone, and that is bad enough, but to text too, is utterly crazy. I think the law should be passed in every state. Here in Oregon, the law will go into effect on January 1st of net yeat. I am all for it, as it will cut down on accidents, that is for sure. My contention is, if you want to text and drive, either pull off the road or don't do it in the first place. Take care, and happy mylotting.

I totally agree. I really think using the hands free idea is good enough while driving. I do use my cell but rarely while driving. I'd rather concentrate on what I am doing behind the wheel. Maybe this is why I have been driving almost 50 yrs. and never had an accident or ticket. Not a bad record! Thanks for responding.

Hi carolbee Yes I do believe there is a law prohibiting the use to cell phones period while driving, at least if you talk you can still use your eyes, texting is worse so I think this law should be world wide, texting is really out of control, sometimes I can't see my daughters face its always buried in her phone drives me nuts, great post

My husband is so bad about texting that very often I drive so he can play on his phone. He reads his work email and fun email on his phone also. He can also watch television. I'd rather be safe than sorry so I drive most often. Thanks for responding.

They passed the law here in Indiana also. I think it is a very good thing. My daughter has her cell phone with her all of the time and she loves to text constantly. I have warned her over and over again, how dangerous it is.

I think the law here is for anyone under 18 can't talk or text while on the phone. yesterday my DIL and granddaughter and I went shopping...we were on a four lane...suddenly the car ahead of us goes into the medium at 65 mph....my daughter in law starts screaming...what's that car doing driving down the medium....it scared the beegeevers out of her as she was driving...well we get to our exit and the car is right next to us.....and she is talking on her cell phone!!!!!!

You could have seen a horrible accident yesterday. She was lucky. I've had other drivers change lanes right in front of me while on the phone. I mean close calls. I drive an suv so I know they can see it or maybe they don't see anything. I have to admit usually it's younger girls that do this to me. Thanks for responding.

hi carol. i also believe this a good law and will sure minimize accidents on the road involving cars and other vehicles. it should be implemented not only in the states but elsewhere. i know it's not yet a law in the philippines and we should also have that one. the only problem with any or all the laws we have is proper implementation and strict guidance. and also the cooperation of the public. even though how good a law is, that will still be useless if not properly accepted.

Exactly. There is a $200 fine for kids under 21 texting while driving. But fines don't always get the job done. I think jail time might change some habits..lol Thanks for responding.

Hey carol! I do believe that there is supposed to be a law against using a cell phone while driving here in NY but I don't believe that anyone pays any attention to it! I know that some people do use ear pieces, but not many! If the police do see you using the cell phone they will give you a ticket! But, what good does that do if you have already caused an accident! Talking is bad enough while you're driving, but texting! How can anyone text and drive at the same time? Now that really is pushing it! You can't watch the road and watch the screen at the same time and there is no way anyone who says they can is telling the truth!

I had a hands free mounted phone in the car when they first came out years ago. It was a speaker phone and it was so much easier to use when driving. I rarely get calls when I am now driving but to have an ear piece. I would prefer not to talk on the phone and drive so I most often don't take the call but check later to see who it was and call back. It should be a law in every state to ban the use while driving. Way too many accidents have happened while talking and texting while driving. Thanks for responding.

Hey, This is a good rule, because it will reduce accidents hopefully. But it is funny, if they ban one thing, drivers will always resort to something else, such as using iPods while driving, it is almost the same thing. Make sure you have a good day, Happy Lotting!!

Right after this law went into effect. I saw a young girl driving all over the highway. She was in the lane next to me and in my lane at the same time I was there. I had to swerve more than once to avoid her. Was disappointed no cops were out there to get her. She was texting since I could see what she was doing during the daylight hours. Thanks for responding.

To my knowledge, neither law is in effect where I live. I wish they would place some kind of texting and talking on the phone laws into place here. There are just too many senseless acidents from those two seemingly minor activities. In the state where I used to live, they inacted a law, not long before I moved that if you are going to use you cell phone while driving, you have to pull off onto the shoulder and stop your car. I think that was great, but, just as with speeding, many people think that it is okay as long as there are no police officers around.

I think this new law is not so clever. Texting should be against the law for any and all drivers. I bet it's changed eventually. I don't like talking when I am on the highway so most of the time I don't answer the call. Thanks for responding.

My husband and I moved to New York this month from Pennsylvania. New York has had a state law for years now that says the driver should not use their mobile phone, whether it be to take or make a phone call or to send a text. It was a lot for me to get use to when I first moved here, but I think it is a great idea. And really, it's a law worth getting use to for everyone's safety!

I agree. I wouldn't object to banning the use of a cell while driving at all. It's just as easy to pull over and talk. Can always find a parking lot somewhere. Thanks for responding.

This should be the law everywhere, if you need to use your phone while driving just make the call! Anyone who thinks texting while driving is a good idea should have their head examined. I see people doing this with kids in the car! So hopefully this new law will be passed in every state and cut down on this problem.

Exactly. I've been in the car with our kids when they use their phones but they don't text anyone. I'd have a fit if I were a passenger and saw it. They know the dangers. One of our daughters needs her cell on 24/7 because of her career. Once I told her to pull over and I'd drive her car while she talked. I felt so uncomfortable. Thanks for responding.

IL is going to pass the law soon too, if haven't already to ban texting while driving. I think it is a great idea. They say texting while driving is like being drunk while driving. I have a cell phone but I don't text, but I wouldn't while driving anyway, it is dangerous.

Yes that is a good deal, they just need to go on and stop the phone calls while driving also. I have seen so many bad wrecks caused in part by talking on the phone and not paying attention that I have for years encouraged my repsentives to vote for such a bill. At least now the texing will stop and maybe soon we can get the talking stopped also. I do get some calls while I'm driving but I pull to the side of the street or highway and take the call. It is hard for me to multi task.

Im in the UK and it has already been made against the law,but there are still lots of people who carry on using their phones while they are driving. There have been loads of accidents in this country and lots of deaths due to people using their mobiles whilst driving. So i do think it is good that people are getting into trouble for using them.

I was recently in New Mexiso and it's against the law to use the phone while driving. My daughter's phone rang and she answered it real quick since she was at a stop light but cut the conversation once the light changed. It's a great idea. Thanks for responding.

This is really a great news... Texting while driving really bring hazards to people because this can cause a divided attention and it can lead to accident... I'am really sad that here in the Philippines, that law is not being observed by drivers not even by cops, because even cops text while they're driving... So that's a really good news for your place to lessen accidents.
