As we mylotters were accused yesterday by one discusser of making'stupid topics and stupid discussions I thought okay if they'
think that then let them laugh over this one.
I clomped into my bathroom to get a drink of water and had a
battle with a throw rug. I slide around and did a fandango'and finally I won out and the throw rug lost. So i have decided in this heat'
that throw rug was named that as it has the unfortunate tendency'to slide and slip under one's feet and tries its best to throw'you
to the floor. Hence throw rug.

Hello my friend
Nothing wrong with a good laugh here and there, with so many discussions floating around mylot, if you find a post uninteresting move on to the next no sense criticizing a posters thoughts right? what may be be silly to some means something to others

No I never wondered but I would imagine its because you just throw it down on the floor and it just kinda lays there.

I have a theory! Back in the days where women's rights were really restricted, women had to be careful that their crimes were not noticeable, that they left no evidence. Since murder was not an option, nor bludgeoning the male, they took a rug and not only threw it at the male, but used it to beat the heck out of him. And it left no marks. Once finished, that rug could be thrown right back down. But re-used if needed.

Hi Hatley,
oh hun, I can just picture, slip sliding in the bathroom, I would take off permenatly, throw rug out for good instead of the rug throwing you, hugs.

hi tamara you know I have left the thing in a heap inthe'corner. It'belongs unfortuneatley to my room mate'who is in the hospital at present. The rug and I have had too many'battles and I dont want to fall and break my bionic shoulder. they might have'to'do more surgery on it if I fell and that would be no fun.

Dang! No picture...lol. I think your reason for the name is right on! Makes one wonder if any dance steps were ever invented by people slippin' and slidin', huh? I would imagine that they keep more than a few chiropractors in business too.

It does make one wonder, doesn't it? lol I figured it was because we throw it on the floor, hence throw rug. lol But your idea is a better one for it does carry some weight, throwing us onto the floor! lol

You know - I tried to find the origins of this word, but all I found was that the phrase began during the twenties and is synonymous with "scatter rug", which began during the thirties. Yet, throw rug has outlasted scatter rug - I've never heard the second term. But, others theorize as do I that the reason it is a throw rug is because it can be thrown anywhere a rug is needed rather than tacked down like carpeting. A scatter rug is the same, but probably fell out of use because it was easier to say the other one. Plus, as you and others have noticed, the throw rugs do have a tendency to throw those who have thrown them! LOL

hi jerzgirl I dimly remember hearing of scatter rugs'and wondered if it was because they have a tendency to scatter once people'
walk across the things. I know they are used to decorate'but why not have a non slip backing on them.

i love that. i dont care what anyone says i think its great to have people so much fun like you that puts topics like this to make everyone happy. i try and figure out why anyone would want this to be a boring site instead of just the way you talk with friends. even mylot should appreciate fun topics. sometimes i wonder why they dont seem to. as it gets more people to enjoy being here at all.

Hey Hatley! I like this topic! I think that you are probably
right! The sure are a pain in the azz! I think it probably
got it's name because people would just throw them down on
the floor and kind of let them land wherever they did! And
they definitely always seem to want to get you down on the
floor to! They are so annoying! Always getting caught up in
your feet trying to trip you! I can't tell you how many times
I have had a fight with one and lost!

A throw rug you can just throw anywhere I guess although your explanation does make a lot of sense Hatley and I am pleased that you won. We want to stay on top (pardon the pun) of these so called throw rugs because they show no mercy; it’s us against them and we must not let them take over the world! One for Hatley zero for the throw rug.

Hi Hatley, well we don't have carpets over here but we do have rugs, we do however have a word for carpets but not a specific word for rugs, and certainly not throw rugs. We call them carpets.
Now the custom here is to throw the rug over the balcony, hopefully retaining hold of one end, and shake it vigourously before leaving it to bask in the heat.

like crazy as it had gotten very dusty when I heard a
male voice and a lot of sneezing and oh my it was the
'managers husband who was ringing someones door bell.
Ihad to apologize really quick.
