It's Raining....Umbrella or Rain Coat?

Umbrella - There is a Malay proverb that says that

'We should prepare an umbrella before it rains.'

Do ensure that the umbrella is big enough to shield us when
it rains (and make sure that there’re no holes!)[em]lol[/em]

There is a Malay proverb that says that 'We should prepare an umbrella before it rains.' Do ensure that the umbrella is big enough to shield us when it rains (and make sure that there’re no holes!) I am not sure whether it rains in your country or not. In Malaysia we can't predict the weather at all, it might rain, it might not. Even the weather forecast is not reliable... SO, if it rains, which will you prefer, an umbrella or a rain coat? Do you have an umbrella ready in your car in case it rains. How about our ladies here at myLot, do you have an umbrella in your handbag? Btw, sometimes we do use umbrella when it is too hot, how about wearing a cap or a hat, do you? Do share your views here...thanks and happy myLotting!

Hi Irie! When it is rainy season here in Delhi, I keep both my umbrella and rain coat with me. While driving my bike, raincoat helps me protect myself from the falling rain. However, I do not stop on my way, if it is raining and head towards my home or office as the case may be.

Dear dpk, Thanks for your response, many ladies preferred to use the umbrella and it is handy especially those folded type. Men always prefer the long black umbrellas. Some keep golf umbrellas in their cars which becomes handy when it pours! But rain coat is important for motorcycle riders and school students too. A chorus from the song 'Umbrella' by Rihanna:~ When the sun shines We'll shine together Told you I'll be here forever Said I'll always be your friend Took an oath I'mma stick it out 'till the end Now that it's raining more than ever Know that we still have each other You can stand under my Umbrella You can stand under my Umbrella (Ella ella eh eh eh) Under my umbrella (ella ella eh eh eh) Under my umbrella (ella ella eh eh eh) Under my umbrella All the best and do keep in touch!

Hi Iriene88 I prefer umbrella, because when rains pours down, I can open it and use it immediately instead of open a pack of raincoat and wear that coat. Sometimes raincoat not covered all part of our body. It can't covered our feet and hands. Still, your hand will getting wet and also your shoes. Umbrella can protect all the parts of our body. But maybe if we need to drive a motorcycle, then raincoat is better. Of course we can't use umbrella while driving motorcycle. I personally don't like hat, it makes some mark on my hair and if it's hot, I will sweating and that cause bad smell to the hat that affect my hair too. I always put umbrella inside my car and have a small one that can be flipped inside my bag, just in case it's raining or hot

protection from head to toe except the face...lol
Dear Deepak, Wearing a raincoat offers complete protection from head to toe except the face..If riding a motorcycle, then raincoat is better! Top it up with the helmet that comes with the front screen/plastic cover to protect the face Talk about rain coat, it reminds me of an experience in Shanghai. When we were in the city of Shanghai, the tour guide let us have 2 hours of 'free & easy' to go shopping. It was raining when we are at the shopping streets. In one of the shop, a Chinese young guy ( a sealer promoter) was demonstrating his product 'mini sealer'. We were there, and he saw my son without an umbrella. He is so thoughtful, he took a large size plastic and sealed it into a 'rain coat' for my son...it is perfect fit.. for free. Thanks for sharing and take care!

hello Iriene88, Same thing here in our country. The weather forecast is not always right. So to be safe, I'm always bringing umbrella with me. Prefer umbrella than rain coat for I can use umbrella when it is hot or raining. Rain coat is advisable to use only when there is storm. Wearing hot is just fine too.

I don't really use either unless I am sitting in the rain, and then, I use a raincoat. I don't like the idea of holding a metal rod up into the air above my head in the rain, especially if there is any lightening. I am a bit leary of carrying around a portable lightening rod!! In the heat, I tend to try to stay in the shade when I am outdoors, but other than that, I don't cover my head in any way.

Dear lynnemg, That thoughts do cross my mind at times. I too was weary of carrying around a portable lightening rod!! At times, I had this 'playful' small folded umbrella. During heavy rain and strong wind, the umbrella tends to open 'downside up'...LOL, and people will look and laugh. Bad storm with heavy rain, lightning and thunders, quite scary at times. In Malaysia, towards end of the year when it is monsoon season.. Trees may fall on parked cars Thanks for sharing, hope to hear your views on my other topics too!

It is same here in Mumbai. Here ladies use umbrellas in rain or shine. Gents too use umbrellas during rain and caps during hot seasons. I recently started carrying umbrellas that also if it is raining when I am leaving for office. Otherwise I skip it. Weather dept. is always unreliable every where. This year no rain in Mumbai so far. If the season passes without enough rain there will be heavy water cut. Enjoy your rain. It is a seasonal guest.

Dear meapas, Thanks for your prompt reply, it is very enligtening! It is always a good memory when we are away from our homeland and meet nice guy like the promoter in Shanghai You really have a good sense of humour. If I am a boss, I will employ this guy to promote my products. When we were there, there are a few shops side by side selling the same item 'the mini sealer', yet we noticed, his stall is the one surrounded by customers and he closed quite a number of sales....great job! He was very creative. He even demonstrate to my husband by 'vacuum sealed with plastic' onto my husband cellphone from being wet...just like those plastic cellphone cover, or remote control cover that sells in the shops! All the best, cheers!

Iriene... I think it rains everywhere in the world right? or else where do the water come from? As for me, I hate the umbrella to the max! Frankly speaking, I rather not go out if I have to walk under the rain with an umbrella. When I was younger, my mum will always nag that how come I am wet and get into the rain, and she really dislike it, coz after getting wet in the rain, we might follow by sick But I just don't like to hold on something while caring every steps I take under the rain. Already I am so clumsy while walking under the rain, the umbrella does not help. Even a rain coat, I just don't like it. I would rather get wet!

yes Iriene, what we got to do is to take a hot shower when arrive home with the wet body to avoid catching the flu bugs.. and when it rains, if we have more than a few person got caught, that's when it's worse, coz you will be freaky cold, and wet plus everyone fighting to into the bathroom.. And on the foldable umbrella, indeed it's kind of 'clown' when the umbrella just couldn't take the wind, and flip! Do you know when I used to work in a cafe, we will normally have the collection of leftover umbrella, especially when people left after rain stop.. maybe since the rain has stop, people just tend to forget that the use of umbrella..

Wearing a raincoat offers complete protection from head to toe; however, it's only practical if you're riding a bike or if you need to walk to your office daily in the torrential rain. I've used both; however, I find using the umbrella is the most viable as you don't have to "undress" when you arrive at your office or bring an extra bag to store it. An umbrella offers you protection over your head, your face and part of your shoulders; even if you wear a rain coat, your face would be drenched in the heavy down pour, but if you use an umbrella, you could make adjustments - unless there's a strong gust of wind.

Dear Kev, Totally agreed with you, to use a rain coat or umbrella, it is depends on where we are and what we are doing. Like you mentioned, umbrella is useful for adults, in their daily life, especially those who drive a car. But rain coat is important for motorcycle riders and school students too. If you notice, in the early days, just after the demise of the bamboo umbrella, foldables came into fashion at about the same time as the plastic fabrics. These were mainly Chinese imports and they were durable. You can feel the strength of the stem as well as all the interleaving metal parts. The foldable never fails. A press on the button on the handle and it practically springs up and perform. These days, the metal are so weak and the construction, so flimsy. No wonder, useful life is so short. Maybe it is meant to be! Otherwise these companies cannot make money. LOL! Thanks for sharing, hope to hear your views on my other topics too!

I don't like umbrellas, they always seem to behave weirdly for me - turning inside out, blowing upside down, wrapping themselves round my head and getting themselves left on buses....(ok, so maybe that last one could be my fault...!) So I guess I would go for the raincoat. Except I don't actually own one at the moment....lol I will go out in the rain anyway though - I'm English, if we didn't go out in the rain there we'd all be indoors all day! I actually live in NEW England, USA, and I always find it funny here because it snows til about April and everyone takes that in their stride, but as soon as it rains, everyones indoors hiding behind the curtains going 'Arrrgh! Build a boat!!!'

I do keep an umbrella in the car and also have several at home however it's easier for me to put on a light raincoat instead of carrying an umbrella. The weather in the state of Missouri is also difficult to predict. Also find it easier to hang a raincoat than try to find a place to put a wet umbrella. I carry a smaller purse so there's no room to store an umbrella.

What a nice man to help you out in the rain. I have seen people with trash bags covering them. Cut out a hole in top of the bag for your head and the body stays dry. It's cheap and easy! It's raining here today also and probably because it's a holiday weekend and many people have plans to be outside. I usually wear a rain jacket. Need to correct myself on that one. Anything long that covers my legs bothers me when I walk. I have long legs, take big steps and a coat limits my stride.

Sinai on camel. But I just let it go even though I was there with all the opportunity - sigh - So, cease the opportunity, do whatever you want (good ones...lol) All the ebst and take care :)

I prefer both actually. There is no much difference with the two as long as they can shield us from the rain, but currently I use raincoat going to school because i can't use umbrella while driving a motor bike. My sister always have an umbrella in her handbag whether it's raining or if it's too hot. Umbrella can be used with those two weather conditions but raincoat cannot. I wear a cap during hot summer days or even raining sometimes. A cap is technically an all around thing to use. Cheers

SAWASDEE KRUP! Thanks for the very nice song. I read first the song before the entire message of yours and i was under the impression that it was you who sung that song lol. It is difficult for motorbike drivers to use an umbrella that's why i chose to have a raincoat. There are people here who can drive motorbike whilst using an umbrella and I envied them hehe because i can't do it. Anyhow i will always keep in touch as i find mylot a nice place to hang out. Just so you know, I am from the Philippines, only here for work..MABUHAY!
