After using the toilet/bathroom, do you use tissue paper or water.

This is an embrassing question, I know, but I would like to know what is your opinion on the usage of water or toilet paper. In parts of Asia, we normally use only water to clean ourselves after using the toilet, and most of the people do not use toilet paper. Why I am asking this question, is,I have recently read a news report, which states, that an filipono man was sacked from his job, after his supervisor found out that he was using water, instead of toilet paper. This happened in Australia. Your valuable views on this.

I'm from the US and we use toilet paper. I think I would like to use water, but I'm not really sure how that would work, especially in a public bathroom. I mean, toilet paper is annoying because it can leave bits of paper down there; but at the same time, if you use water you have to dry it afterwards, right? And it wouldn't exactly be sanitary for people to use non-disposable cloths for that, especially in a public restroom. As for the man who was fired- there has got to be more to it than that. Do you know more details you could give?

Wow. Well, I would be interested in seeing what the company's side of the story is, but yea... that seems rather cut and dry in that article. The whole thing is just ridiculous.

rameshkumaar57- That does sound very clean... up until you're finished washing and you need to dry. How is that handled? The problem I see with toilet paper and paper towels is that they can leave little pieces of the paper behind on the intimate bits that were just washed.

I'm from the U.S. and I'm pretty sure just about everyone here uses toilet paper! I can't believe that man was fired because of his way of cleaning himself after going to the bathroom! Seems a lil weird!

Yes, I was also thinking in the same way, the boss must have been stalking the man for some time and when he found that he is wasting the water, he has been fired. But you have to understand, that Asians like us are used to washing and not using toilet paper. Thanks for the response.

I think maybe the boss is stalking his employees. To see if whoever is wasting company resources. It's just so weird though...

Hi There, I use water since i feel tissue paper usage is quite unhygienic. Use of water can be the most hygienic thing to do when we are out from a loo or a bathroom.

Yes, this is a comment to all three, because all three of you have mentioned the same thing. I also feel that washing after using the toilet, is the best thing and when I use the toilet paper, I also feel uncomfortable.

yeah we filipinos are very clean people. we often wash our hands but though in toilet we were not trained to use tissue paper cause most filipino people just throw the tissue on the bowl and flushed it there which cause some problem on the toilet bowl. anyways, so that is why filipinos avoid using tissue and they hate seeing some tissue on the bin with some trash of human waste on it. it looks awful and so people just like to wash with their hands.

I'm a Filipino I think it is an insult in our part. It is not a right to fired him it it is not appropriate they should respect his culture. Here in the Philippines we prefer to use water and soap than using toilet paper. We are known to be clean people.

hey there. I am from the UK and here everyone uses toilet paper. It would be very uncommon for anyone to use water. I think that it was not just to sack the man from his job for the way he cleans himself! I think as humans we are not tolerant enough of others' believes and traditions. We need to be more accepting of the different way things can be done. For me personally I would prefer to use paper as this is what i am used to!

I totally agree with pushkin69. There is no reason for the boss to sack his employee just because he has a different practice or norm. Everyone of us is different. Even if you compare yourself to your blood relatives, they can't always have the same traits / behaviors that you have. I just hope that people will be a little bit considerate...

i'm from China and we here use tissue paper after using toilet. but as i know, using water is more sanitary. if condition permit, i would like to use water. i cannot understand very well why supervisor in Austrilia would fire that man just because he was using the water instead of toilet paper, though water condition is bad in Australia.i think it's his way of living, to fire him is a little severe.

This is quite new to me, I thought most of the Asian countries, used only water to clean themselves, but now I see that Chinese use toilet paper. Maybe things have started to change a lot. Thanks for the response.

haaaaa i'm from Thailand. People here are mostly using water to clean themselves first and then just graping a little piece of tissue paper to dry up next. Since long times ago I had been wondering why other countries don't use water after using toilet, but now I quite understand the reason, they are trying to reserve water!!! But don't you think using only tissue paper is not totally clean and makes you feel a bit uncomfortable. When I have to use only tissue paper to clean myself, it takes time for me coz' I gotta wipe and wipe and wipe many times until I'm sure myself really cleaned... this way also consumes much paper!!! And I think a cost of water utility compared to a price of tissue paper is much cheaper!!!

I mainly use tissue because of how I was raised, however there are times when it just doesn't feel clean enough. Then I wash up. I don't feel comfortable with water spurting from a toilet at me, something just doesn't seem right and I imagine it must be quite cold.
• India

I understand what you are trying to convey. In cold countries, this must be a very big problem, and of course one cannot expect to have hot water to clean oneself after using the toilet. Thanks for the response.

Here in the Philippines though, we normally use water to clean ourselves after using the toilet. It's just so unfair for the boss of my fellow country man for firing him. I mean, all of us has its own rights and we can do anything we want as long as it is not against the law. And i don't think that there is a low in Australia saying that you cannot use water in cleaning yourself after using the toilet. PS. I'm just trying to be civilize here though... for MyLot's sake.

yes that is a very good question from you.Am a food scientist and technologist by training, work now as a health officer.I use water.this is bcos water cleanse more than toilet paper.water washes away dirts and bacterials more toilet papers. All these also depend on the avalaibility of water in that locality.

Of course, water cleans more than the toilet paper and we can always wash our hands with soap, after this cleaning ritutal. Thanks for the response.

Where I am we use toilet paper after we use the bathroom. I do know that there are a lot of restrooms here in my local area that do not have toilet paper dispensers in their stalls, in fact once you are done using the facilities there is a built in sprayer in the toilet that will spray you clean. I'm sorry but I prefer the old method of using toilet paper and don't think I will ever change my mind on that one.
• India

A lot of people in India, also have started using this sprayer instead of using their hands. Of course it takes time to change the old habits. Thanks for the response.

First,I quite sympathize with the filipono man.In my view, that supervisor was unreasonable and arbitrary, and what he did just made a kind man who tried to save the paper resource lose job.Maybe that supervisor would excuse himself that the filipono was wasting water, but in a way he was saving another resource. That supervisor should not judge a man only by one aspect.Of couse,Australia is a country lack of water, and water values much more than paper, but a high quality is more precious than water. If the supervisor deal with the matter in a kind way, such as educating him not to do so.I think it will be more convincing.

First of all let me welcome you to Mylot Chanllys. I see that this is your first post and I am very happy that you have sent this post to my discussion. This is what happens, when we go to a foreign land, and take up a job there. It is always better to follow the particular countries, culture and tradition, other wise, it is the induvidual like this person who is going to suffer.

Hi, rameshkumaar57. I am trying to figure out how cleaning yourself with water will help to wipe yourself?? I always use toilet tissue. There are just some things that water can't get up all by itself. I need tissue, it helps to wipe up anything that is messy. Here in America, we use toilet tissue to wipe ourselves. I don't know about others, but that is what I do.

outside like at work, restaurant or etc i use tissue since theres no water and soap available. but if at home i normally use water. I think that the reason why the filipino fired from job by using water is that maybe the water scattered on the floor and looks messy. unlike at home we can just clean it. of course it will not be comfortable if your going to clean toilet outside only bcoz you mess the water out so of course tissue will be the best to use outside.

I see a lot of people commenting on how intolerant the employers was just because a man wanted to clean himself in a certain way. In my opinion, I think the employer saw it as a waste of water. I'm guessing Australia was in the middle of a really bad drought at the time of this incident (I mean, we technically still are now)and many states including my own had many water restrictions. For example, we weren't allowed to water our lawns after a certain time (if at all), definitely no hose-watering of the garden and no washing of cars, ESPECIALLY with a hose. If it had been a recurring incident, I think the employer would have fired him on the basis of wasting water, not just because he wanted to use a different method than TP for cleaning himself.

I understand that Australia is having a drought, but at the same time, one must give consideration for ones culture and tradition. We in India feel very impure and dirty, when we do not wash and use only toilet paper. Thanks for the response.
