How do you treat TMJ?

I suffer from TMJ and dont have medical coverage. The pain is horrible and effects my right jaw, ear, neck and my shoulders. It isn't constant or I would be crazy. I went for a ride on our motorcycle today and now the pain is awful. I mean it is AWFUL! It feels swollen and is shooting pain from my jaw into my ear. What works for this? Are there any exercises, heat, cold compresses or what that helps with this kind of pain. Cold sends it screaming and heat makes it swell worse normally. This is worse than an ear ache or tooth ache and incredibly it feels like it is getting worse. I took some aspirin to kill the pain but I have anemia to so aspirin is not something I really want to take for pain. Any ideas that help with pain and swelling.

oh, I have never heard something like TMJ before, maybe it is different in my language but it looks that's a very bad thing, I hope you will get over it sometime :(

the thing that worked best for me was actually getting a mouth guard. the reason i had it was i was grinding my teeth in my sleep, and the guard stopped most of it.walgreens/walmart has them, and you can custom some of them to fit.
