English Dub vs English Sub vs *other language* sub vs Watching it Raw

I know it's been a struggle in the internet, as anime-lovers increase in a fan growth. But the serious question here is, is it enough? A lot of people are asking me, how do I watch animes ahead of everyone else? Simple. I download subbed versions of them off. The thing is that, I don't know whether the one I'm downloading is illegal or it's by God in every sense of the word "Fansubbing" that it is way too legal. I know some people out there would flame me, scorch me out of myLot saying "That is perfectly ILLEGAL, japanese earn off by showing the raw version and dubbed version on tv + selling all DVD's but what your doing is screwing them off by taking their rights to earn money." Perfectly said, but what would the normal fan say: "We're all fans here, we have the right to watch it, we have the right to share it to our friends, we do not tend to scatter it, just to our closes friends" But the thing here is that even though fansubbing is for friends alone, some of the friends get hardheaded and still post them in streaming websites. FUNIMATION took control. But the normal fansubber wouldn't let go of the dream to share the treasured anime world of the selfish japanese. Would you wait for 2 years+ to watch the same anime episode that will probably poorly Dubbed in the future, or would you rather watch it now? It's Legality vs Fanhood and Fan interest. Even though it may look like a tagteam. It's still a heavy way to go, for Legal issues has the bigger weight in all of this.

I watch jap dubbed with eng subbed anime for two reasons: 1. They are way ahead of the english dubbed useally. 2. Because the eng dubbed characters get annoying at times. Example-Naruto english dub: "Believe it!"

There are way to many good anime series only available in eng sub and I could not imagine having to wait years for the subs but to answer the question both. I watch it online in english dub then wait for it to come out in english and do the same thing. I personally prefer the dubs to the subs even if it is bad at time I like to know what they're saying but if only subs are available that's fine too. It's still anime isn't it. There is only one way to get around this and that would be to learn Japanese! On a compepletely unrelated matter if anyone is looking for a goo site to watch streaming anime I reccomend animepalm.com or justdubs.net they both have a good selection.

I as an anime fan would watch it in english subbed then wait for the local television networks here to broadcast it and watch it dubbed and if that anime is so great I could but the original dvd. At least I know it is very good to have watched it so many times and I think companies are also making money by selling items (i hope we all but those licensed ones but really sometimes it is too expensive) like toys from animes. And about the legal stuffs I do not know, maybe it is a case of "If this is so wrong, why am I so happy" (just kidding, it is a line from drama) I think to solve this problem is to buy licensed one if you really like it and of course for the japanese to sell it a little cheaper.

I prefer English subbed! It's much better or more "RAW" than English dubbed...

Well I prefer subbed animes. Even if they are fansubbed. Not that it's good to do illegal things, but really now. No one's going to watch a raw anime or an anime that has horrible subs. And we buy the dvds if they're good enough and sometimes the merchandise too. I would rather watch it now, since I hate having to listen to bad voice actors. Also, it ruins the anime and the emotions behind it. As for raw... I don't completely understand Japanese so I'd prefer to have some kind of translating help, if ever. Fansubs all the way!

I watch in the original language too as I've had years of not so great dubbing jobs (plus lets not forget about the censorship and mutilations of stories overall). There are also cases of anime not being brought outside of Japan either for popularity reasons (plenty of visual novels to anime), production/direction decisions (either the anime creators/studios or studios abroad trying to bring it in), or legal issues (*sadly waves at Macross franchise...*)

If I'm watching the anime for the first time then I watch the japanese, after that if I'm interested in the dub I watch that as well, arguably, some anime have better dubs than the original japanese ones, like dragonball z, devil may cry or hellsing ultimate but of course that for everyone to decide for themselves...but really, most dubs are good enough to be compared to the originals...its by companies like 4kids that people hate dubs... As to whether I would wait for a dub, no. I can do whatever I want because I live in Greece so downloading a dub or the japanese version is entirely the same to me, if its not licensed in Greece there's no trouble for me. So I don't care what version I'm watching, I'll take anything as long as the dub doesn't suck or its not the first time I'm watching...

Hi Kingguy, I have to say that I don't really see much of a problem with watching a fansubbed version, as long as I own some anime in disk form as well. Generally if I know something is good because I watched it via fansubs I am more likely to buy it when it is released, particularly since anime never seems to be screened on TV here (Britain) so I don't have a chance to catch it any other way! The main one that comes to mind is D.Gray-man. I watched that online, and then because I loved it so much I bought all the manga, and whenever the anime is going to be released I will buy it as well. this means that I am still supporting the industry and so I don't feel I should be ashamed of watching it online! All the best, Dranz

Agree with you ._.d i cant stand to wait for the anime played in my country (it usually takes about 5 year?!) T_T so i will prefer to watch the fansubbed:) I o have plan to make a fansub for my country. No need to pay attention about the legality, the anime/manga creator already got a lot of incentive for their royalty ;;)
