How much time do you need to prepare a meal for your family?

A meal for your family - the people live in your house only. How long do you usually take to prepare and cook a meal? I right now have 2 people in the house - me and my spouse, I don't need to cook a lot, 2 people portion will be good enough, so the preparation time & cooking time always won't exceed an hour. It might take a little bit longer if I want to make something new or need the grill though. What about you?

Well I live in a house with three people including myself and it takes about an hour or two to prepare a simple meal. if it's something complicated like soup or pie then it takes me two to three hours. I prefer to use the microwave and my convection oven more often nowadays though because it makes things easier to cook and it doesn't take as long.

Well i don't really count the time i spend on a meal. There are 7 people here in my family. I don't cook often because my mother-in-law cooks for us. If i cook totally i think it would cost about an hour and a half . My hubby thinks that i take so much time to make a meal and he would do better in cooking than me . well sometimes i admit that i'm not a quick and good cook. I actually cook very slowly.

Hi mermaidivy, we always cook our food at hime ( well90% of time) and all the three meals everyday. So if it is breakfast and we are four person it takes less time than the dinner. Dinner usually take over 1 hour and 30mins as we usually prepare vegetables and then make rotis for all of us but if we are cooking pulses and rice then ofcourse it wont take even one hour so it actually depends what we are cooking and how many dishes we are making.

it doesn't eat up much time especially if the ingredients are readied ahead. it also depends on how many entries u cook and what u cook.

Cooking - I love to cook!
I always look for quickfire recipes that's why I can prepare my family's meal in less than 30minutes. Quickfire is a cooking show that i love to what wherein they show you how to prepare good tasting meals in just 10 mins. I just love their recipes. We are 7 in the family including my parents.

Hello mermaidivy, I only cook for three - me, my husband and little son. On weekdays, I cook 3-4 simple dishes and it takes me around an hour to finish. I always make sure that my family can have dinner by 8 at night, so that I have plenty of time to do other house chores after that

We're 4 in the family. I don't make lunch but it takes me approximately an hour to prepare dinner. I usually cook 2 entrees. If I have to have rice on the table I steam it early in the day and the only thing that could take me to cook a little longer is if I don't know what to cook at all. lol....that usually end up with cup noodles or just call the pizza guy cause i'm just not in the mood and they should get the message. haha

There are 3 adults and one child. It usually would take no more than 30 minutes to an hour for a home cooked meal depending on the meal. I love quick and easy meals. The more time consuming menus I cook on a Sunday. When my kids were young and I was working I would make a few dishes and freeze on a Sunday. Then I would just have to heat up when I got home from work. Instead of always cooking a meal when I got home from a long day at work.

I live alone, so that doesn´t count. But when I have friends or family over (very frecuently, at least twice a week), I don´t spend much more than half an hour at the kitchen. Then it´s just checking how things are doing and tasting for salt. As for the cooking time, of course it depends on what you are doing. My baked chicken takes a lot of time because I cook it at medium temperature for a long time so the skin is crusty. I like to bake whole chicken. But the time to prepare it is not more than 10 min, including the handwashing later Happy posting!

hi mermaidivy! that would depend on what u want to cook. i had two hours experience of cooking chicken biryani. woh, it even made me use three skillets. but for simple preparations, usually it's only 20 to 30 minutes or less. :)

Im cooking for a family size of 9 but i try to make my prep time goal of 30min for every meal i make. Typically 30 minutes is enough to fix most our favorite meals. If its a meal that is for a special occation it will take about 15 minutes longer depending on the dish. I find having a well organzied kitchen with items easy to locate and reachable is a huge help. I have the spice cubboard located close to the cooking area so i can grab, season and put away quickly. Also i think experience comes into play too, if you have been cooking for a good number of year you tend to estimate amounts rather than exact messuring.

I don't think it takes much longer to cook for one than it takes to cook for 4 or 6. It usually depends on what is being fixed. I'm fixing Simple Chicken Parmesan for myself and two adult grandkids. The noodles are cooked and will just need to be heated. The chicken had been pounded and seasoned. so all that is left is to bread the chicken and cook it.heat the linguine. A salad or vegetable will take only about 5 min. I would say that including my prep work It will take about 45 min

It really depends on what it is that I'm going to cook for my folks. I'd say that the average time is of 2 hours, however. If I want to make a more complicated dish, it can go up to some 4 hours. If I want to make it quick, one hour or less then.

That is about the same amount of time I take too. From start till finish, it is about 1 hour. And like you said, depending on the dish that we are cooking, it may take a little longer. The shortest time I took to whip up a meal for two is 20 mins, complete with soup, rice and a dish of either vegetables or meat.

Im single and usually cook enough for more than just one meal. Sometimes i will bake a single size meal something real quick in the microwave. It cooks as good as a regular oven and a lot less time.

I usually lose patience after about 30 minutes, so my meals are not overly complex. Like you, there are only two of us in the household, so there is no need to make a big production.
