I've learnt that out of all the things that we use daily, the key board is the dirtiest though it does'nt appear to be like one. It has the most amt of harmful bacteria. So u need to keep ur keyboard clean all the time. it is also good to wash ur hands after u've done using the computer. especially, my mylotter frenz who spend hours on computer and use the keyboard need to know this. there are new anti-bacterial keyboards too in the market.. well, not exactly new.. jus incase anyone was not aware of that.

Yeah, it's true that they're really dirty overall, but remember, you were the one who put the germs there in the first place most likely. If you're putting anything there, it'll only make other people sick or get other people's hands dirty. And not only is it a good idea to wash your hands after using the computer, but you should also wash them beforehand. I haven't heard any reviews about antibacterial keyboards, but keyboard covers sometimes are helpful and some, I think, can even be washed. This can keep keyboards even cleaner.

Yes I've read it somewhere that the computer keyboard is one of the dirtiest thing that we use daily. But I'm not worried because I'm not usually in front of the computer. But I still think I need to clean it though because my daughter likes to snack while surfing the net.

Hi cryapytears, you've raised a very good point there as mine seems to have some yogurt in it and the letters are sticking a bit, and now that you mention it it definitely needs a good cleanin. But I haven't got a clue how to go about it and you failed to give the solution which I could definitely use. I can't wash it as it's electrical so how exactly does one clean it up?

Thanks a lot for that, we don't use vacuums out here but I'll try the rest as they are really sticking today, keep having to type G twice. You obviously hadn't heard of my reputation as a total technophobe. How long after using disinfectant is it safe to turn it back on again and will bleach do the trick or just bathroom cleaner? Sorry

hi thea09! sory, i mentioned the problem but no soln given. but hey, here iam.. all u have to do is unplug the keyboard, use some anti-bacterial and disinfectant spray, take the cleaning cloth and clean the keyboard gently. For the dust, which is accumulated under the keys or in the gap between the keys, u cud either use the cotton buds or mini vaccum cleaner helps a lot.

Yes, I keep my keyboard clean. Not only does it harbor a ton of bacteria but it also is not good for the keyboard if you don't clean it on a regular basis. The keys will begin to stick, and they either will not work at all when you press them or they will repeat even after you have taken your finger off them.

yes i agree with u. the keys usually get jammed and can be irritating to the user. keeping them clean not only helps in terms of hygiene it always avoids keyboards getting spoilt. good pt purplealabaster.

Thanks for sharing this information cryhapytears. My keyboard looks clean so it never occurred to me. Mouse, however, gives problem off and on, so I just lift it, and remove any dirt that has accumulated under it, and then it works fine. From where does the bacteria come here? I mean, there is nothing organic here. And what could be the ailments that can be associated with it, if u could elaborate on that, it would be nice. :)

Hi Vandana7! glad to c u again..well, the reasons for keyboards becoming a home bacteria are many. especially ur hands, if hands are not clean then u deposit the bacteria and then its passed to the other users. most of us have a bad habit of eating at our desks. so the food deposits are one more cause. Dust is also a major factor as it traps moisture-exactly what the bacteria need to flourish. it is also a fact that keyboards are five times more filthier than a toilet seat. most of the hygiene tests have proved it. so, goes without saying, how important it is keep our keyboards clean.

I too have heard something about that. I personally don't worry much about the cleanliness of my own keyboard! I'm just happy that it continues to remain operational! I do clean all the dust from the keyboard though as it does tend to build up over time. That's a great idea though regarding the new antibacterial keyboards, I would definitely be up for buying one of those and I would keep the old one as a spare. Andrew

I am glad that you started this discussion. It is very important to keep one's keyboard clean. I keep it clean on a regular basis. It is important for our health and also increases the life of the keyboard. Many of us have a habit of having a snack while working on the computer. We may then touch the keyboard and then some of the food particles stick to it and harbour germs. This is the worst thing we can do. The smallest of things can help us stay healthy.Keeping the keyboard clean is one such simple thing.

I clean my keyboard every week.It gets very dirty as I do not cover it.I get bored of cleaning it every week. Now I bought an anti-bacterial keyboard and I cover it properly. So that saves my time and I am carefree about the maintenance of the keyboard and less likely to get infected while using it.

Hiya cryhapytears, Er clean the keyboard? Well yes it does have a good clean in fact it´s quite a shiny keyboard because I´m the only one that cleans it. I give the keyboard a good clean everyweek or if it has got suddenly very dirty as well. Keyboards and telephone receivers are a focus of infection and specially public call boxes. Strange no one mentions that one. Also I have to wash my hands anyway as I do other things in the Kitchen my hands get worn away. Also give this keyboard a lot of writing to lol. Well that´s what keyboards are for this keyboard in particular has seen some stories I can tell you. Joking really because I like writing stories when I can. So apart from that this keyboard has the keys quite worn down maybe I´ll get one of those antibacterial keyboards that you mention. Great information take care all.

I have to confess my work keyboard is not very clean. It has a lot of dust and crumbs in it, so probably not very hygienic. Every now and then i try to clean it out a bit which I actually find quite therapeutic, but generally I'm not that bothered by it.

I have to agree - so much stuff get stuck in it. I keep mine clean and tidy. I have the little vacuum and i disinfect regularly. I dont have the anti-bac keyboard though and I dont think it would make much of a difference if i had one. I'd still be vacuuming it and disinfecting to make sure.

You are absolutely right. I use to not care about how clean my laptop and my desktop keyboards are but then after a few months I noticed a lot of keys have been stuck so I started cleaning them manually. It was only then that i came to my senses how dirty keyboards can be to think that I also share them with my siblings. I have a 4year old baby brother so I need too be extra careful. Now I try to clean them as often as I could and I even purchased this vacuum cleaner especially made for keyboards so I can clean them easily.

I've heard about how dirty keyboard can be and it is true. This one is quite a mess. I don't snack while using it but it still get dirty. I used cotton buds to help me cleaning it. It can reach deeper into the keys. Though I must say, the keyboard won't be really clean. Some dirt might get inside. I need to get one of those mini vacuum cleaner to clean all this mess.

Well I always clean my keyboard once a month to get all of the gunk out of it like dust and all the gross stuff that gets in there. Also, I usually get a bottle of hand sanitizer and use it on the keyboard and on my hands every so often. I haven't heard of the new anti-bacterial keyboards, thanks for the information~
