What food brings back childhood memories?

September 15, 2009 11:50am CST
Did anyone watch "Ratatoille" I remember te scene where he makes food for the food critic and it takes him back to his childhood days. What food alsways reminds you of your childhood when you eat it or hear about it? And it is something that you loved as a child or something that you always avoided eating? Freshly baked bread reminds me of my childhood because we used to make bread and shape the dough into our own shapes with letters and different shapes, then eat it warm from the oven with butter. It was such an exiciting thing watching the bread rise in the oven. What I did not line as I child was fried eggs and I still can not bring myself to eat them now. I can still taste the rubbery texture that I did not like each time I smell fired eggs :(

Oh yes! I remember! My daughter loves that movie! She calls it the mooooooouse movie! lol.. A food that brings me memories from my childhood are these oatmeal cookies my mother use to make.. Yum! I have tried making them myself but it didn't taste as good... I ask my mother to make them all the time but she has forgotten the recipe! Oh! If anyone has any ideas! Or recipes! Let me know!

I think I may have a recipe in my bread, cakes and biscuits baking encyclopaedia. I will see if I can find one for you. It also has farmhouse biscuits which have oatmeal in it and are delicios especially when straight from the oven.

I am from Texas and memories of foods and events connected with foods come back frequently. As a child I hated what was called goulash-which is simply hamburger in a special tomato sauce mixed with macaroni. As an adult,I find myself making that food once in a while. But,my favorite is (don't laugh)pinto beans and biscuits with butter or cornbread and milk. Those were foods we ate after Dad worked in the fields all day.And they bring back memories of the whole family sitting around the table eating and sharing their day.

Is that pinto beans and biscuitth butter together or pinto beans and then biscuits with butter lol. Sorry for the naviety just being sure. I love cornbread i have only ever had my own homemade one never tried it in the sops before. But next time I go to the USI definitely want to try it in the stores to tastet the difference. If it is pinto beans on heir own how was it cooked? Also when you say biscuits is that like what we call scones or it is like cookies? I like scones with butter especially when they are toasted. We used to have that as a child.

I make the biscuits and pinto beans seperate. When the biscuits are done,I split one(or two)and butter them, then put the pinto beans over them. The cornbread, I crumble and put milk over like you would cold cereal.I really like it,but not everyone would.

I'm sorry-I didn't finish that last post. The beans are from dried beans that you put in water and cook just about all day. However I buy them canned-a brand called Luck's.They are like home made and you only have to heat them up. I don't know if biscuits are like scones-they're not a cookie. They are what my mom used to call baking powder biscuits. I'm sorry,I'm not really sure what a scone is.

My childhood was mostly spent in England in the war years. Food was scarce and rationed and I can't actually remember any meals. My mother was a shocking cook, so maybe that is why I can only remember porridge. I didn't eat porridge for years. I eat it now and love it, but it bears no resemblance to what I had as a child. I remember chestnuts. There was a massive chestnut tree in a field, overhanging the footpath. After school I collected chestnuts and thought they were wonderful. On one of my return trips to England I bought a packet of "hot, roasted chestnuts" but they bore no likeness to my childhood memories. We had a few fruit bushes in our back garden - gooseberries, raspberries and black currants and I loved them. We can't get fresh gooseberries here in Australia, but I'd love to try them again.

The very, very best porridge you will ever eat - Soak the oats overnight with a good portion of fresh minced ginger and microwave in the morning. Wonderful!

Ohhh ginger is one of my favourite spices. I put ginger in all sorts of things cakes, biscuits, smoothies never in porrigde though. I will definitely try it. Do I soak it in water and then just pop the contents in the microwave? Also how much water fo I need to use? I am looking forward to it.

Porridge is what I have for breakfast most days and I did not like it as a child because it was made with water, but now I make it with milk and add banana or raisins/sultanas. I sometimes mix it with cocoa powder when eating as a snack. I am yet to try it with blueberries but I saw someone at work doing that once and will definitely give it a go.

Junk foods reminisces me of my childhood days. Its because we used to cook it in my sisters' plastic stoves and then, she puts it in small plastic plates then we eat it. I really loved remembering those younger days of ours that we used to make a playhouse and tried to cook something like junk foods.

Very cute and remember playing make-believe. It was fun so much imagination was necessary. We used to pretend the floor was the sea and the chair were our boats so we had to swim between boats. It was so much fun!

18 Sep 09
That's so funny because I did not like boiled eggs either when I was young I could only eat omelettes, boiled and fried eggs I found disguisting and now I like boiled eggs but I am a fan of the yolk part so sometimes I take it out because I realy like the white part, or I eat most of the egg with the olk part then finish off with the white part...lol :)

Corn flavoured ice cream brings back the memory of my childhood. I was about 5 or six years old when my mother took me and my younger brother to a local exhibition. It wasn't the most expensive one (in fact it's relatively cheap now), but I still can remember the sweet smell of it until now. I'm now 24, and I still crave that corn flavoured ice cream like crazy. But somehow, I still can find and buy it now. And I always get too sentimental when I eat it. I'll suddenly miss my mom, my younger brother and of course, my childhood. I wouldn't trade that with Haagen dasczh (spelling?) or anything. I just want my corn flavoured ice cream.
16 Sep 09
I have never heard of corn-flavoured ice-cream - is there anything out there now that tastes like it. i am a huge fan of corn so I would love to taste it. I imagine it tasting like cornbread but more creamier and sweeter. Am I close?

It sounds very nice, if I ever visit indonesia I will look out for it otherwise I will investigate if there are any indonesia shops or restuarants in the UK that have it. I would really like to try it.

Yes, that's exactly how it taste, just like a combination of corn syrup, vanilla and lots of cream with corn seed in it.Actually it's a basic flavour here in Indonesia, foreigners may not like it though lol.

I always remember eating raw tomatoes as a child. Up to now I will still prefer raw tomatoes and any tomato based dish over anything else. This can be one of the reasons why in the family I alone don't have diabetes and hypertension. Another dish that brings back memories of childhood is a vegetable dish my mom makes that is made of pole beans sauteed in ground beef. The dish is quite economical and nutritious. I don't recall much about sweets because even if my mom baked a lot when I was young, I always grabbed the apples and tomatoes from the fridge.
16 Sep 09
Yummy raw tomatoes are nice and I love apples too and did as a child. I was one of those children that eat their vegetables, though I did have a sweet tooth which I put down to not having much sweets/chocolates as a child so whenever we had the opportunity it was indulgence. But I did love my vegetables and fruits as well.

My mother was a bad cook when I was growing up. In fact my mother is still a bad cook. Her food usually tastes bad. I'm sorry to say it but its true, my mother is a bad cook! So I do not have any favorite foods from when I was growing up. On the other hand, I have foods that I HATE even today that we were forced to eat growing up. One of those foods is salmon patties made with canned salmon. I hate the flavor, the look and the smell of them! The smell of someone cooking salmon patties is a terrible smell that takes me back to the bad days of eating bad food when I was growing up. I have been outside walking before and I could tell when someone was cooking salmon patties inside their house! It's one of those things that there is no way possible that I can ever eat ever again! On the other hand, I love fresh grilled salmon today as an adult.
18 Sep 09
That is a shame but I am sure you have some other fond memories of your childhood. It is good that you do like fresh salmon because it is very healthy. How do you like to cook your salmon?

16 Sep 09
I never had sweet potato as a child but I do now and it is tasty. I have not tried it baked before. is it baked plainly or is something added? Is Cotton candy the same as Candy Floss, I think that's what it is called in the UK?

food that reminds me of my childhood was chocolate cake.ever since I was a child,I love chocolate cakes.it reminds of my birthday parties.my parents always give me chocolate cake for my birthday.until now, when I eat chocolate cake,I feel like a kid.
16 Sep 09
Yes chocolate cake on birthdays is definitely a childhood memory. We used to get Sara Lee's Chocolate gateau from Iceland. It is a frozen cake so we used to be so impatient that sometimes it was still a bit ice cold and frozen in places but we would still eat it. It was layers of chocolate cake with a chocolate type creamy filling in between.

The skin of the bubble gum I was a kid is a little boy who looked like steamed buns mouth blown a head bigger than his bubble, but bubble gum itself is half white half red, if they can be able to eat 2 1 blowing a big, big bubble, but that is a dime a time, if one ate two very luxurious, so we often buy two of three, one a half, so a double benefit!
16 Sep 09
I remember liking bubble gum as a child, we used to see who could blow the niggest bubble and keep it the longest. As a teenage I did not like it but I tried some again last year some time and it brought back childhood memrories. I was trying to blow bubbles again but seemed to have losted the back for it. I remember we used to load our mouths as kids with as many as possible in order to make really big bubbles.

When I was young, I didn't like any food related to scallion. I hated its spicy scent. Later, someone told me that scallion is good to health, then I began to try to eat scallion, and now I have been used to the food with scallion:)

Condensed milk reminds me of my childhood days... i remember that if we don't have sandwich spread for bread, we would open a can of condensed milk and use it as a sandwich spread. Later on i knew that my husband is also fond of using condensed milk but instead on bread he mixes it with his rice. He says that when he was young, if there is no viand, he would use condensed milk instead. Now our children are doing the same thing, using condensed milk on bread and rice.
16 Sep 09
I have had condensed milk on toast because my fried at university used to do it amd so i tried it one day because she used to go on and on about how delicioius it was. I can not remember what it tastes like now so I am going to try it again and see. My husband and I mix evapourated milk with rice, then add some sugar to make a rice pudding. It is delicious so i am sure it is just as tasty with condensed milk.

Vienna sausages and crescent rolls. My mom and I always used to eat them when we were watching a movie or some sporting event on T.V. When I was a kid, I thought they were the perfect food. Protein and carbs all in a portable package. When I eat them now it's usually at parties, but it always makes me smile and remember being seven.

I think candy floss is the one that reminds me of all the goodness in my childhood. My granddad would usually buy me one when we went to fun fairs or theme parks, and we all knew my mum would complain about it when we went home. Although I can still get candy floss at fairs and events, it is never the same as receiving it from my granddad's hand. The floss was like being blessed when passed from his hand. It was full of love and affection.

Yes candy floss reminds me of fun fairs as a kid. So fluffy and sweet. and fabtastic as a kid. I have not had candy floss for a very very long time!!!!!

Lollipop.because when i was young i use to buy and eat lollipop 'cause im addicted to sugar...and now i'm already 17 years old and when i go to the grocery at the counter i will be tempted to by lollipop 'cause it makes me feel young again.
18 Sep 09
Yes lollipops like sweets (candy) were fantastic as a child. I can not remember the last time I had a lollipop. All this talk of sweets is making me want to by some today and reminisce, I have notice though that I can no longer eat as much as I used to when I was a child.
