Gray hair - when did you start getting it?

I've started getting some gray hair when i was 36. I felt kind of sad but that's how it is as we age. I have dark hair so I get it colored with highlights regularly since. I've seen some people at a very young age with gray hair already. Maybe it's in their genes...so I'm curious to know how old were you when you started getting gray hair? Are you letting it grow? Pluck it? Have it colored? What do you do about it?

I'm 43 years old and I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who haven't a gray hair yet. How do I know this? I went to the hairdresser to get a hair cut a couple of months ago and the hairdresser was amazed that I haven't got a single gray hair. My sister who's 3 years younger than me has gray hair as well as losing some hair. I think that's because she's under a lot of stress at work and at home. Me on the other hand am a stay at home mom so I have less stress. I should have a little stress but I've learned not to let it bother me.

I guess I had my first gray hair when I was 20. I am 26 now and still see a couple of them here and there. I dont want gray hair but I dont pluck them rather. I was told plucking htem will increase the growth of gray hair. So refrain from doing such things. In india they use somehting called Mehendi which is kind of giving nutrition or protein to the hair which will also help in stopping the gray hair grwoth.

Nope, that's a myth. I saw it on the doctor's show on tv. Plucking gray hair will NOT increase its growth but rather it will grow at the very exact location it was plucked from. Thanks for your response.

I first started etting gray hair about 40. I color my hair now, because if I didnt I would probably be at least 90 percent gray. I think gray hair can be attractive I just don't know if it would be attractive on me. Maybe in a bout ten years I will try cutting it short and putting some sort of gray rinse on it and see what it looks like.

That's true gray hair can be attractive to some people. Nicole Kidman was photographed with her gray hair and she's flaunting it. http://badhairday.typepad.com/bad_hair_day/nicole_kidman/

I'm not trying to be x rated or anything, but I am 44 and still don't have any gray hair on my head. I have plenty elsewhere though. I even spotted one on my arm the other morning in the shower. But when I start getting gray on my head, I'd probably pluck it until there are too many to pluck. Then I will color it. Should be easy since my daughter is going to cosmetology school. Maybe she will do it for free!!!!

It is genetic in my family to start getting it early. Found my first one at 15..my husband is 33 and I hae more then twice as much as he has and I am only 27. My sister who has a different father, was completely grey by the time she was my age. I am just letting mine grow atm..Im sure eventually I will dye it, its makin me look old.

Yeah...i think genes has a lot to do with it. I remember that guy Taylor from American Idol. He was only 29 at the time and is all gray already.

well, i am 29, and as of yet, i don't think i have gotten any gray hairs. I so i don't think i have for two differnt reasons. One, my hair is naturally blonde, and contains many differnt shaedes from hairs that are so pale as to be almost white, to hairs that i are darkish brunette shade naturally, so it would be kind of hard for any gray hairs to show up very well. And also, i dye my hair very regularly, to a reddish/burgandy shade. As soon as my roots strat to show, i know it is getting to be time to dye it agian, so i never really have time to check it out and see ifthey are gray or not LoL. Once i do start turning gray, i don't know what i will do. It really depends on HOW it turns gray. If it is just sporadic gray hairs here and there, i will probably continue to just dye my hair and call it good. But i would LOVE to get that beautiful silver gray color. We'll just have to see what happens with time i supose.

Hi gicolet, I was in my mid forties when I first started getting enough of it to show. I may have had some earlier but I'm blonde so it did not really show up much at first. Ya..I do put some color in it to cover it. I have an aunt that went gray in her 30's. She had black hair. I actually thought that on her it looked good. I actually know a lot of women that look great with their natural gray hair. Not me...not one of them.

Lucky for you! I have my gray hair when I was 14 or 15 years old. It started with just a few strand, so I pulled it out to remove it. I even let my friends pulled out a few. But as I grow, my gray hair tends to grow more so I started dying my hair. Just imagine Rouge from X-men, but my gray hair is on top of my head so I can sometimes hide it by wearing head-band, if I don't have time to dye them. I don't know if there are alternatives so that it'll stop spreading, maybe before I reach 40 all my hair would be gray. I hope not. They say it's hereditary, I got it from both sides, my mom and dad. I'm tired of it and sometimes affect my self esteem. How can I get rid of it without dyeing is there anyone knows any alternative? Thank you!

Hi, I knew I had a handful of them even when I was younger, but when I turned 40 it was when they really started to bother me, because it's like they "mushroomed" faster than a blink of an eye. Prior to this I can ignore a strand or two, or even more than that, I let my niece pull them out every once in a while. At 41 I had to make one of the biggest decisions in my life - to dye or not to dye. I chose the first one, coz I can't afford to have half of my hair pulled out altogether, or wear gray hair and look older than my age. Tough choice!

Hi Gicolet, Gray Hair is pretty common for everybody. Due to body hormone, nowadays, you can see some youngsters even have some gray hairs at their young ages. No plucking to be done as it will lead to more gray hair to grow. If you worry about your look, then go to salon for colouring/dying. There are plenty of nice colours, choose the best colour that you like.

I'm not worried about my look cause i know i can always take care of my gray hair by going to my salon...it's not a lot anyway...just seeing something here and there that's all. Thanks for your response.

I found the first gray hair in my head recently. I'm 29 years old. I have a cousin that is only five months older than me who has had gray in his hair since he was 18 years old. We both have pretty dark hair so it is easy to see as well. Right now for me, when I see one I am plucking it. However, when they decide to become more prominent I am going to have to have my hair colored. I am just far too young to look old.

i started having gray hair when i was 38 or about ur age. i have read somewhere that graying of hair is due to heredity but is not always the case(that would explain why there are younger people who have gray hair). but age plays a role, too. as we grow older, the cells in our hair produce lesser pigment until there is no pigment at all which makes our hair gray (or transparent).

I was probably the same age as you, although luckily it started going grey on the underside of my hair, so it only really showed if I brushed me hair up. Now, at 40, I have just recently dyed my hair for the first time as the grey shows up more these days, around my fringe and temples. A girl I knew started getting hairs of grey in her teens. We didn't do so badly to get to late thirties. It is terribly ageing though. I feel much more like 'myself' now I have coloured it back to my youthful dark blonde. xx

I have more gray hairs now that I am 47. My hair is still very black but whenever I look into my hair, I see a lot gray hairs peeping out. I pluck them out because it annoys me, they feel itchy. Once there are more gray than black hairs, I will start putting highlights on them.

11??? wow..that's really young. My 12 yr old daughter had 1 strand (yes, one) of gray hair since she was 3. I ask her to keep it and never pull it out. I said it's her lucky hair or her own personal lucky charm. lol :)

I got my first grays when I was 27. At first I plucked, and then I dyed , first blond, then red. And now I can't wait for the whole thing to go gray. Gonna frizz it out,get 100 cats and a shotgun. Yup, that's my retirement plan.

Hello Gicolet, Nice discussion. For me, I still don't have any gray hair. If I have got gray hair, I will pluck it. I don't like to have any gray hair. if the gray hair is getting more, then I think it is better to do hair coloring . But my younger brother has many gray hair. So he needs to do color for his hair to cover all the gray hair. I do not know why he has gray hair at his young age. When I was a kid, I get to earn something from plucking gray hair, or I should say white hair for my grandmother. My grandmother has many white hair. When she was free, she would ask me to pluck her white hair. Once I get 100 white hair for her, she would reward me one buck,!

Hello, I was 30 when I noticed my first gray hair. It does not bother me if I have gray hair. Funny as it sounds I like gray hair. I find it can give a person an air of sophistication. I look forward to going gray strange but true.
