Ways to promote your website free and effective?

I stopped blogging for a while a now, and have forgotten how to promote a certain website, marketing-wise. I am currently working on building a website, and maybe later on upgrade on an e-commerce website. Right now, I don't want to spend a dime google or marketing that. Well, mylot is one! I will let you guys know once it is all up.. Can you give me inputs? I heard of google keywords, do you buy them? just curious. Thanks
