Germany
September 21, 2009 10:51am CST
After i have introduced my breastfed baby the solid food. I have found that he will have constipation easily. Lately, he is having the constipation again. Yesterday he passed motion, but the stool was only a little ball. Today, two times he made the sound (sounds of pressing in order to pass motion), but there was nothing coming out. He did not cry, he still can eat, play, and sleep. What can i do to help him ease the constipation???

Hello Lulumartin, So sorry to hear that My daughter has encounter the same problems before when she was about 2 years ++ . I gave her prune juice and it works on her. She poo after 1 hour taken the prune juice. But for sure prune juice isn't the long term remedies. We have to find out what is the main reason the baby has the constipation, then only we can work on her. For my daughter, I know her well. She drinks too little of water and eat less vegetables and fruits. So I always need to make sure she takes enough fluids and vegetables everyday. So you need to find out if the solid food make her having the constipation or due to other reason. Hope you can get solve your problem soon.

Hi again, I forgot to add some good point for you regarding baby start solid food. Even though a baby does not require any solid foods for the first 9 months, you can start them on well boiled and mashed vegetables from the 6th month. Start with very small quantities increasing it gradually. If feeding them mashed vegetables, make sure that the child is given plenty of boiled and cooled water to drink. may I know how old is your baby now?

Hi Lulu, Glad to hear that your baby has got the bowel movement done. You can try introduce some spinach for your baby. Carrot is a good choice too. I do hear from some mummies and read in magazines that baby is taking mama's milk does not need to take any water. But I guess water is important for them especially when you have started solids food for them.

When my daughter had that problem when she was a baby... the doctor would always say to give her more water to drink... and that certainly helped... the if the problem persisted... i used cipository (forgot how to spell it)... but she cried a lot as i put it in her... And now that my daughter is 3 years old... my sister told me to just give her some honey... or let her eat a lot of papaya... good thing my daughter loves the former so that is what i give her when she is having problems with constipation...

Hi, aseretdd. I think it's still early to give my baby honey. I have not introduced him the papaya yet. I think drinking more water helps my son. I'm relieved when i saw him passed motion this morning. :-) So far, i have never used cipository (not sure how to spell too) to my son. My parents used this to me when i was small....I did not like it at all. Thanks for dropping by here. And have a nice day!

Let your baby drink some apple juice and more water and after about 30 min gently press your baby's stomach on the bottom right side upward, across, and then down to the left. This is called "I love you" massage. Make a letter "I" from the bottom upwards on the right side of your baby's abdomen, then across the upper abdomen to make a downward letter "L", then make a stroke downwards from there on your baby's left side abdomen to make a letter "U". So there's your "ILU". Ain't that sweet? This was recommended by a pediatrician on the Doctor's show. Hope that helps and your baby feel better :)

I would try to offer more juice to the baby. Juice is good tpo use for anyone who would like to keep a regular bowel movement. i would at least try it and see if that works for the baby.

lulumartin, I think before you start panicking, I feel you should be observe and see if your baby is drinking enough fluids. Constipation is usually due to dehydration or change in diet. It could also be because of the solid food that you are introducing. So, just exercise some logic before you call the shots. Normally, the most effective way to overcome constipation will be feeding your baby with prune juice occasionally over water. Milk formulas can also be heaty to certain babies and they can react with constipation too. It would also help if you can boil some barely for them to drink which is really good for their digestive system. Hope these few tips will be helpful for you.

Actually,to take care a baby is very tired thing. Now I can feel the sense of being a father, although I don't mary and haven't any baby. But there are so many example for me to learn.Sometimes I even hate to have a baby, and wanna to be a member of DINK,which is dreaming in the daylight, because in Chinese cluture, without the next generation is a kind of sin.

I would suggest for your baby to drink more water on a daily basis or give him some fruit juice. You can buy those baby bottled juice as a start and also give them more water regularly. I guess this would help on the constipation thingy.

My son has occasional problems with constipation, so I feel pretty qualified to amswer this question. The other people that have responded are right, apple and prune juice are great for constipation, but with my son, at least, he needed a little more help with getting it out. The first thing I tried was a stool softener that had to be ordered by a pharmacist. The stuff tasted like crap and my son would throw it up before it had time to act. Since that didn't work and we were going on day 2 with no poopie diapers, I got some glycerin supposotories. They worked really well. I cut them in half, put some KY jelly on them to make them go in easier and my son didn't really fuss about it. If it had hurt him he would have let me know. A few weeks ago he got super constipated and it was really bothering him to the point he was fussing so I looked up some things online. I first tried a q tip with mineral oil on it to try to lube things up and make it easier for him. I waited a few hours and even though he was grunting, he wasn't getting anything out. I finally had to break down and do an enema on him. Again, he didn't fuss, I think because he was already in so much pain from being unable to get rid of waste. Even the enema didn't work immediately like I thought it would. After a few hours and some prunes he finally had a HUGE blowout in his diaper. Lucky for me, I had went to the grocery store, so Daddy got to change that one. ha ha. I wouldn't worry about it seriously until a couple days have past. If you're switching the baby to whole milk, that is a common cause of constipation.

apple and banana are good for constipation but since we are talking about a baby here, the best thing to do is to seek a doctor's help immediately. It's really hard to self-medicate when it comes to babies because we don't know how they really feel, they can't explain exactly what they feel and so it is always best to consult physicians. It's too hard to risk anything.

Give him a little apple juice, even if you have to dilute it down a bit. That's what I always did for my daughter when she was younger. You would want to start out with a little at a time, though, or it could cause diarrhea.
