THe name is a reference to dachshands - called sausage dog because of their long bodies and short legs. LOng sausages caught in the United States in the nineteenth century. The term HOT DOG was popularized by cartoonist Tad Dorgan in the early 1900s when he sketched vendors selling the sausages from hot-water tanks.
