Is Money really that Important to us?

Philippines

I know that money can be considered a real necessity for buying our needs and wants. most specially when it comes to paying our daily bills every month or so, keeping it on update and to prevent late payments. But with the World gone small with the use of technology, it has come to my attention that it has also become complicated. before the only i am worried was our Electricity and water. but now, there's cable, internet connection, health insurance, membership dues in a home owners. So may things to think of paying.. but despite of what has become in this time, do you still think that money is really important despite of these things that you're experiencing. alot of parents are not in time to spent with the child or partner simply because they need to make money... What does it keep you from being obsessed to it? or is it too late 4u to back off from the greedy snydrome Thank you...

I seem to go through cycles where money is important. If I am broke, then it is going to be more important than if I have plenty of it. Hunger would dictate that I guess. I have discovered that regardless of my financial circumstances, if I focus my mind on the moment, then everything else drifts into the background and loses it's importance. The Buddha said that the source of all suffering was desire. I think that has been an important lesson in my life. - Derek

sadly,i agree on that. desire does gives us the frustration if we don't get after years of hard work or it's simply hard to reach. so, how did that help you to focusjust asking. thanks for this response.

I can't say that anything helps me to focus, as this is an act of will. I simply say in my mind over and over in meditation for a few moment, "there is only now. The future isn't yet and the past is gone". I practice Zen, and I have been meditating now for more than 30 years and at first it was not easy, but as time went on, it became easier and easier and focusing on the moment of now, is something that happens most of the day, unless my attention is taken elsewhere. There is a link in my profile here on myLot to instructions on meditation. - Derek

I don't think money always important for human. We can earn money by illegal ways. Money matters but not from wrong source. If you have capability to earn money in smart ways, then you have to proceed like setting up a business according to your hobbies. I have setup a online shopping community. Hi dear! You are right, that money sometimes makes us forget about our relations, when one is obsessed with money. Life has become complicated and we need to meet so many expenses with our income. Previously, life used to be simple and requirement of people used to less. However, with the advancement of technology and other progress in general, need for money has grown many time. And we keep running after money every time.

We cannot survive without money, it is true. We should pray to God that he should give us enough money so that we could live a comfortable life.

In this time of difficulties I think we need money and this is important if we are live in the urban areas. But those living in the remote area, money is also needs but not much consider because they don't have to worry about paying bills and other necessities in life... We cannot avoid to think the important of money if we are live in the city. Because of many necessities we need to buy to live moderately. Some people left their family because of money. Wife will exchange their family because of money. Parents go to a far place to find a greener pasture to earn more money. This is now the reason of evils invitation to fall into sin. People being greedy because of money... A lot of trouble because of money. So money is important. But for me i don't think money is important but only second one since this is only material to buy our needs.. Have a great day!

i second to that, you just can't replace money over your family and loved. even if you're already abroad, they should remember the good reason why they left abroad simply good for the family. but how i wish we didn't to go through this and instead work in our country if only we didn't have this unemployment problem in our country

I agree with you, Mikaela_taz25. If our government is really good enough and do something to give people a nice good jobs. No need for us to go anywhere in the world to find a greener pasture...To prevent broken family especially those wife and husband going abroad to find some to their family but the result is they find another relationship that makes the family going into trouble...have a nice day//1

Hey Mikaela. I love your name. You'll have to teach me how to say it. So what is money? Well back a thousand years, say you had a farmer and a blacksmith. The farmer needs a plow to till the field. The Blacksmith needs food to eat and metal to smelt into plows. Now the blacksmith can trade (barter) a plow for food. But how does he get more metal to make into another plow? He could trade plows for enough food, to trade some food for metal with someone else. But what happens when you leave food out? Mice and insects and animals get into it. So instead they start trading in rare commodities like gold and silver. So now the blacksmith trades the plow for a kilogram of silver. He then uses some of the silver to barter for food, and the rest to get more metal. The problem with silver and gold is they are very heavy and hard to hide, and easily stolen. So the government takes the gold and silver and issues a note valued in gold, which is the currency, money. So we trade federal notes for the commodities and services we need. In Zimbabwe, the government declared their currency invalid. The entire country started trading in gold for commodities and services again. This is how we got to the point of using money. Can we avoid the greedy syndrome? Sure. It has nothing to do with money though. Before money, people collected gold and silver as much as they could. Before trading in gold, people collected animal pelts in the US, and grain and food in other countries. Man is inherently selfish and greedy. We always have a tendency to want more and more even when we already have enough. Here in the US, a welfare lady was complaining that her government paid for home, government paid for food, and welfare money, still wasn't enough because she couldn't afford cable TV. Even when given everything for free, she wanted more.

Mikaela, this is why we learn about G-d and teach our kids morals, right from wrong, and how to be giving towards others. Yes we have a tendency to be selfish, but we are not trapped like an animal with instincts. We just have to teach our children better, and learn it ourselves.

That is dilemma fo me. I have 2 childs. Ever work day I can not play with them. Every work day I go early morning when my son still sleep and come late night when my son already sleep. But, if I don't work like that I can not give money to my wife for eat. I think money is important, but we must make schedule for family. If I get one day of in a week I must play with my son

Our modern world runs on money, so it would be very hard without money. We need it to buy food and other necessities. And as important as it is, we must be in control. We cannot let money control our lives. We have to find the balance. We must always remain the master.

Money is important, but you need to know it's priority. Is money more important than your health? Your family?

Money is secondary only to support two other more important things and that is family and health. you think too much of money or you gonna loose both. most people do that now a days, disregarding the fruitful times of having a family

I must say that money is really important. It is the tool for us to survive. But it should not be the end all and be all of everything. We must not neglect the other things in life that are important like family. We should make a conscious effort to make it work for us and for us not to be enslaved by it.

well, i could say it's a secondary tool for us to survive. money won't matter if civilization crumbles to extinction and left over humans won't need oey to buy stuff, they just get it

I like the response by masteronline. Money is a necessity so that we can live, there's no way around it. Family is even more important. We have to balance it as best we can. I think what causes the problems for most families is not the need for money, but the use of credit. Buying the best car, the biggest house, the techno-stuff that our credit will allow makes a lot of bills we would not have if we strove to live on cash rather than credit. It's not entirely possible to live without credit, but we can stay close by ripping up the credit cards that suck us dry and buying amenities when the savings account allows instead.

While everyone needs to make enough money to pay for the necessities of everyday living and to be able to live comfortably, I do think some people do get obsessed with making money. They get carried away with accumulating more and more wealth to the point that it's the driving force in their lives and everything else is secondary. I believe it can almost be as bad as an addiction to some. Take someone like Bill Gates for example. The man has more money than he could possibly spend in his lifetime, so what is his obsession with making more? I think money IS important, but not to the extent that it would hurt relationships or cause you to neglect your family. I think that's what that old saying, "Money can't buy happiness" really means.

i agree with your statement. no wonder we have this story about eveniza scroodge about a person who sacrifice love, and friendship only for just plain dumb money. but you know what those people aren't happy at all because they tend to loose everything after spending too little and not donating it to the needy

Yes yes yes!!! there's a lot of paupers in the streets and of course unemployed people. You can not live now a days without money! Me too I dreamed of having enough money (not too much!) too, to be able to build the house i want to.

unemployed is giving desperation to those who don't have money to get into drastic measures like snatching and stick-up to ordinary people at night so that they can have easy money and kill that person

Money is very important to us because with money we can buy food which is the most important needs in our body. without money we cannot buy foods that we are going to eat, we cannot buy those things that we needed everyday.

yes, money is the 'necessary evil'. gone are the days when money couldn't buy everything. true, there are still some things that money cannot buy, but even to maintain those 'things' you need money.

Although there are things that money cannot buy. But without money, there will be more things that we cannot have. So money is an important factor in life, be it whether we need it or not.

Although i can't work now coz i'm only high school student, I still want to make some money no matter how much it is. That's why i'm in mylot to make some money. I think money is really important for people nowaday.

Money is important to everyone even if they don't like it. Money has been in practice as a tool of slavery since the greenbacks were discontinued. Money both creates and solves problems, though most problems solved by money are caused by money.

i agree, it has really something to do with history and it really has turned some people into slaves because of these. there was a time where some people are being sold for property. and i agree to that money can be both a problem and a solution.
