I would consider this as somewhat of an upset, so what do you think? Are Liverpool in the decline after losing their midfield coordinator, Alonso?

my friends, football is mystery.sometimes you are shocking when the greatest team can be beaten by a weak team. but in this match i think fiorentina deserve to win. i know that this is the best perfomance night from jovetic. he prove that he deserved to be bought from belgrade with much money although many fiorentina fans never trust his ability. i think fiorentina is deserve to win

Hi adhyz, Fiorentina is not a weak team and that kind of result is expected. They are unlucky in their first game because they have to play with 10 men and lost one nil to Lyon. They are forth in the standing st Serie A now. The only different in this game is Fiorentina tke the chances and Liverpool play below par. Liverpool can't break the very discipline Fiorentina guard even thought they control the second half. And all Fiorentina players go to defense their lead.

I think we all understand what you mean adhyz82. Before the game started most would expect Liverpool to be the favorites to at least get a draw. Therefore this win, in somewhat convincing fashion, was a surprise.

Alonso is just a player. A good player, but nonetheless just a player. Just like Man Utd will keep on winning matches after C. Ronaldo's departure, so will Liverpool after Alonso's. A team is much more than one player, and the Premiership victories and points support my opinion as stated above. It's true that the loss at Firenze may seam a little much, but the Italian side is not a weak one either.

ya, football is team sports not only one players shows. even alonso is a great player, he can win a match by himself. he needs ten player others to win the match.

On the average the match was good and the result even made it better! Many would have given Fiorentina no chance to shock Liverpool the way the team did. This result has brought a new twist to the permutation and combination of the chance of each team from that group to procede to the next stage. Well, Liverpool's performance in the first half of the game was woeful to say the least. However, I considered Fiorentina lucky to scored those goals. The first goal was great but the second was just mere luck. Liverpool came back a better team during the second half of the game but the Fiorentina team played what some will describe as "negative football" to deny Liverpool even a consolation goal. In fact on that night Liverpool and their fans "walked alone"! I consider the match as a pointer to what to expect in the coming match days as we should expect many "title contenders" to be shocked by teams considered as "also run". Will Liverpool recover from this shock, difficult to say for the team's win in the first match at home was never convincing. We should, however, note that if history will repeat itself, Liverpool remains a strong force to reckon with playing in Europe.

I absolutely agree that this is an indication of things to come. Especially in the case of Liverpool. They seem to lack creativity, even more so then normal.

Yeah Lost 0-2 was a bad result for Liverpool, that was reverse from last EPL fixture when they destroy Hull City by 6-1. probably Fiorentina win can be a proof that Italian Club is still have great reputation is Europe this year after disappointing results that Italian Club displayed in couple years

I won't put too much emphasis on the Hull game. The Hull defense is disastrous. As for Fiorentina's reputation, they are most definitely one of the better sides in Europe. Liverpool being beaten away by Fiorentina isn't really that much of an upset, but what is surprising to me is the lack of creativity in Liverpool's play. They dominated possession in the second half because Fiorentina stood back to defend the lead, but they did nothing with the possession. When Fiorentina had the ball, there was something dynamic about their passes, a purpose, where as the Liverpool passes were just diagonal balls to the wing, hoping that the wingers and full backs will do something with it.

Hi fallenjinx, I watch this game this morning (it is play at 2.30am here) and what I can say is Liverpool doesn't play like they used to play. They are lost in the middle of no where especially in the first half. They are lacking the holding midfielder. Should Marcherano played, this problem will not as much as today. Losing Alonso to Real Madrid is not a problem since Liverpool is a team and no one totally command the team. But it has an effect though. The defender has more tasks since Marcherano and Alonso usually cover it up before. Lucas and Benayoun is not a defensive midfielder. Benayoun is more to attacking then defending. Lucas is a waste. No function at all and I don't know why Barnitez keep him on this team. But credit to Fiorentina. They deserve the win and it is a fair play. They controlling the first have and take their chances and score 2 goals at the first half. Liverpool come out better in the second half but they just can not get the ball in. All Fiorentina player station on their side including the striker. They relay on counter attack. This is a good match except for a Liverpool fan (including me). But I believe we can win at home against Lyon and win the group. Today game just a set back.

I agree that it was a brillant match. I dont normally enjoy Liverpool games because of their direct style but this one was fascinating. I thought the second half said alot about Liverpool's short comings. They found it hard to break down a very organized Fiorentina, they couldn't create clear cut changes, they midfield did not pass the ball quick enough. When they did find the penetrating ball, they had only Torres in the box because Gerrard had to be part of the build up. I think this is the difference an Alonso makes. With Alonso, Gerrard knew that he could operate as a second striker because Alonso ensured that the quality passes where there. Lucas lacks confidence and is not as good a passer, so Gerrard gets frustrated and joins in with the build up. Liverpool fans will hope that Aquillani can be the player to change that.

Just like I said before, Alonso is not the reason for this defeat. I think if Mascherano play the result might different. The problem I see in this game is there is no holding midfielder in Liverpool team and Gerrard have to cover it up. Gerrard is not as effective in that area compere to his free rule. But the whole team doesn't function as usual and that contribute to this defeat. The team performance are below par and even Rafa Benitez agree with it.
