I finally got an Acer laptop. The problem is, I have no idea how to get on the internet with that thing. I am on a friend's computer at the moment. It says that it is Wifi sertified or something like that. I just want to know how to hook everything up. I really miss being on Mylot and my desktop is still in storage.

I assume you have been using your own Internet account at home with your desktop. Otherwise you will have to get one. If you are using land line (dial up, DSL, cable) you are going to need a wireless router. The router is connected to the modem, which in turn is connected to the land line (this last part is for the benefit of those who has no clue whatsoever). By default the connection, if everything is connected and switched on, is ready for networking. There may be a wireless button on your laptop which needs to be pressed if there is no wireless icon on the bottom right hand side of the screen. Once connected to the router, you will have to enter your Internet account log in details. Follow the instructions given. Alternatively you can test your WiFi by going to a free hotspot, if there is any in your area.

There is a landline here but I did not know that I would need it to access the internet on a wifi certified laptop. I am totally clueless on this one. I have an Msn icon on the computer, but I do not know how to sign up for it. I have no idea if the router that I need, came with the computer or I need to purchase it seperately. This is quite frustrating as I thought it would be much easier than this.

A free hotspot is a place or location where there is an active wireless router, unprotected by any password, or firewall. At such location we need only a WiFi certified laptop. Switch it on, and the laptop will automatically be connected to the network, and the Internet if the network is connected to it. Most private networks are protected. 1) You need to have an account with an ISP, otherwise you cannot access the Internet using your computer. 2) If the ISP does not provide a modem, usually they do, you may have to purchase a wireless modem. I do not know how things are in your country, but in mine the Internet service provider gives a wireless router/modem.

I am slowly learning the ropes and you are right. Things are the same way out here also.

Hi! Rozie, I am happy to give my reply to your discussion. The main thing you need to consider is with your ISP who provides internet service to your location. That may be wireless or wired. If you could confirm this, your ISP will instruct you how to be with internet. Even if you have a problem to do this, then consult your local dealer of your laptop to check system configuration and other driver settings.

Hi Rozie, congrats on your new baby. When you bought your Acer did you subscribe to an internet service for it. I'm thinking that wifi service has its own connection and that is like its own modem. something like ATT or Verizon or somebody. A flat rate a month. Separate from your home internet since the Acer can go anywhere. Whomever you get the service with will probably set it up for you. I'm just guessing. It may be set up if you bought the subscription already. Good luck.
