I think first we must get the meaning of mahatma that stands for maha+atma in hindi. that is great soul. and why he is called mahatma. cause he did not live for himself he lived for humanities. he only was not respected by only his followers he was respected by his enemies even. his weapon was to be non-violent. and he convinced millions to be non-violent even if some one is violent in front of them. thats great can you today imagine even someone who can ask you to be non-violent even if some one is going crazy in front of you. its really not. but he was the person. who did this. is not it great. yes it is.

Mahatma means the great soul. and when a soul becomes great, when it has many souls who believe that she is great. mahatma Gandhi never called himself mahatma, we accepted him as mahatma. mahatma Gandhi had a karishma, millions of people were ready to be beaten and not to be violent even by his sayings only. can we imagine this kind of following today for any leader. definitely not. that person only fought for rights with no weapons and no violence. which made him mahatma.
