What are some methods you use to get a better understanding of a new language you're learning? Also, how do you choose the languages you want to learn out of all the other choices out there?

I see where you're coming from, there's no one around here to teach me Japanese in persn, and that leads me to looking for online courses.

It's difficult to learn the language on your own, theoretcially. You should have a study partner. It's no use when you only have your learning on your mind and you're not using it. My friend and I are learning japanese and I think it's the most difficult language to learn. Really challenging.

for me, to really learn a new language, you need to like it first, no negative feelings about it is very important, if you like it, you feel the beauty of that language, it will definitely speed up the learning process. i like english, i feel like learning english is a fun thing to do, so that i can double my result by less effort, i didn't like french, though i want to learn it, but still now i can't. a good to learn a language is that you need to use the language, and talking to people is the best to do so, not only you can learn the language, but also the culture, good luck!

I was spending most of my time in mysoju.com. I became addicted with japanese drama. And I thought, why not make it serious. I mean, to learn nihonggo. So I bought a self-study book. While using the book, I make sure that I watch jdrama everyday. It's good because somehow, I get to understand the conversations.

I haven't been to Mysoju in a while. I use to watch Japanese and Korean drama and movies. I've actually learned a little for watching them though.

That works half of the time, but what about the other half? You need to know how to spell words too.

lol, you're kind of like me. I've been putting learning Japanese on hold only to keep starting again on learning the hiragana and katakana. I have to get back in the game.

Hello! At the moment, I'm interested in Korean. However, I didn't take any formal classes because I don't have it in my area. I became interested in learning the language because I love their entertainment industry. I watched music shows, dramas, tv shows and it encourages me to learn more. Therefore, I search online sites that can teach me basics for the language, and after that, I keep on watching their shows and train myself not to depend on the subtitles. As for Mandarin, I watch Taiwanese dramas to improve my skills and it somehow works in a way. However, the most important thing is that we need to have interest and love towards the language. Some people were forced to learn it and in the end, they wil never get to use it effectively.
