Hi dear mylotters, Do you have the habit of drinking water in between meals? Do you prefer to drink cold water after a meal? I think most of us prefer to take cold water especially the whether is hot. I just gone through an article where it has written that the ‘cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed and will slow down the digestion. Once this sludge reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer & arthritis’. So it is best to have a cup of hot soup or warm water after a meal. Dear friends, please share your knowledge about the same topic.

Hi Chaitra, First of all drinking water in between meals is not good. You can drink water before the meal or after the meal. If you drink the water before the meal then your appetite may come down and you may not be eat well. I don’t have the habit of drinking water in between meals or end of the meals, I only drink water after sometime. This is my habit not doing for any health benefit or I am not much health conscious too. In winter we too prefer warm water. Thank you very much for the appreciation. Happy Deepawali dear, enjoy the festival.

Hi Kala, I don’t have the habit of drinking water in between taking my food but once I finish having my food, I drink cold or normal water. If ever I drink water in-between mouthful of food, my stomach feels full and I cant eat any more. However, what you mention in the article can be true…I read something similar about the Japanese always drinking warm water after meal so that the fat in the food does not solidify and settle in our body! But seriously Kala, can you drink warm water in this Indian heat? Ughh…think about the kids…they would think mama’s gone bonkers LOL

Hi Sudipta, True dear I also don’t have the habit of drinking water in between meals. You are right we can't eat well if we drink water in between or before the meals. In summer season it is very difficult to drink warm water instead all prefer to cold water or normal water. Handling kids is very difficult, if the milk is little hot then my 2+ old will tell me to drink myself, then how can I give hot water to them. How about the Deepawali celebrations. Happy Deepawali to you. Enjoy the festival, have fun.

Hullo Shree! I too got this forward where the benefits of drinking warm water were given.I also remember you having started one earlier discussion about the beneift of drinking water[isn't it?] Usually after consuming some sweet or some fatty dessert I do drink warm water so that the oily taste disappears. But I do not do this normally Shree --first of all I am a bit health conscious and do not go in for frying or having fried things.

Hi Kala, Yes I started a discussion earlier, the topic, 'Do you drink enough water for the day'. There is one more discussion about water, I think it may be a year ago and the topic, ‘How do you make sure your drinking water is safe’. Here the theme is different. I read some useful information and thought to share the same with mylot friends. I never heard this information before. I do not drink cold water just to avoid problems in my throat. We may drink warm water in the winter that is not for any health benefit just for escaping from the cool. It is good to avoid oily food and much sweets too. Thank you very much for the participation. Happy Deepawali.

From what i learned it is good to have a warm water or a warm soup while having a meal. It will help dissolve the food. I believe cold water will solidify the oily stuff we are eating. When the oil is solidy it will slow our metabolism. So it is good to have a warm meal than cold or a meal with soup and drink not cold water.

Hi Sreekala You are right, even doctors advice us to take hot water. Because it melts the oil deposits that are accumulated in the intestines while we take our oilly food, and flushes it out. Thus the cholestrol formation will be controlled. Excess formation of cholestrol leads to heart attacks, obesity which is a major cause for arthritis, knee disorder, diabetics and some other known and unknown diseases. Thus I will take hot water only whenever i am thirsty.

I don't think drinking cold water after meals will cause arthritis or cancer but definitely it will slow down the digestion. A recent study report I read in a newspaper said that drinking hot water as a habit will gradually destroy the mucus lining of your digestive tract and cause ulcer. I don't know how far it is correct. But the logic demands that neither too hot nor too cold is good for the body.Another report, which I read in mylot itself written by somebody else, said that drinking cold water will help you lose burn calories since the body will be working hard to make the temperature of the cold water equavalent to body temperature thereby losing calories by metabolic action. You need to read more authentic papers to know more about it.

Hi cosmo, There are difference of opinion and various researches show different reports. I am really confused too..I also go through some different reports after posting this discussion. I think it is better to follow the way we are doing right now and I prefer to drink water with normal temperature. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Have a nice time.

Hi sree! I take normal water after my meals. I do not consume water till half an hour, after my meals get finished. I do not prefer to take cold or refrigerated water and I take water at room temperature. I hope that normal water does not make an adverse affect on our stomach. I agree with you that if we can afford to take lukewarm or hot water after meals, that would be more fruitful. Thanks for sharing such a wonderful information.

Deepak! This warm water essentially helps when you have had oily food.I have also read that warm milk after hot snacks like Pakodis does the digestive trick.Let us opt for hot samosas and hot tea !What do you say?

Hi Kala! Yes, it is true that we are often advised that we should take hot tea with fried Pakoras and Samoas, may be the 'hot' tea help in digesting fried dishes.

That is interesting information. It does make sense. I don’t usually have any liquids before, during or after food and never considered drinking something warm at the end of a meal. I wonder if a cup of tea will do the job...The problem with soup is that I fancy that at the start of the meal, not the end...

Tea is equally effective Paula and in fact if you feel too full after a meal or you indulge on some rare day in a marriage feast or so, drinking a cup of hot tea after a few minutes of having food helps a lot .You do not feel too full or end up saying "I ate like a pig" OR"I feel like a python"--normally we say things like this after a very heavy meal[ with sweets etc]

Hello friend..I think you're right of what you read about drinking cold water. NO, I am not a cold-drinker of water even it would be on summer days. I used that attitude for a long period of time because I know that by drinking cold water after or between each meals could solidify the food you have eaten. And, this would be the cause of some health problem complications...Nice topic..thanks..

Just saw this article in the internet for everyone information. Most people do not consider drinking hot water refreshing or to have any health benefits in addition to those gained by drinking cold water. Although drinking cold water on a regular basis is good for your health, some experts believe that drinking hot water can be equally beneficial, but in slightly different ways. Both hot and cold water hydrates you, which is the main benefit of drinking water. Cold water sounds more appealing to most people, and does help burn a few extra calories after a work out than lukewarm water. It is also absorbed into the bloodstream easier, which helps hydrate your body, especially if you have been sweating, which dehydrates your body. However, some people are drinking hot water as a way of purifying their bodies, very much like going to a sauna. If you drink a glass or two of hot water, you increase your body temperature slightly. Your body, in order to maintain your temperature around 98.6 degrees, will begin to sweat to cool itself down. The sweating induced by drinking hot water helps purify your bloodstream by flushing toxins out of your body. It is reported that drinking hot water also helps remove deposits in the nervous system that have a negative effect on your thoughts and emotional responses. By drinking hot water, you are able to purify your body and mind, creating a balance that will make you feel healthier and think more clearly. Hot Water Uses You can use hot water to purify yourself simply by drinking a glass of hot water once or twice a week. The water should be quite warm so that it causes you to sweat, but does not burn your mouth when you drink it. You should begin to sweat quite a bit as your body tries to lower its temperature. After you stop sweating, wipe away the perspiration and begin drinking another glass of hot water to balance your temperature. Drinking hot water is also extremely useful in clearing your nasal cavities, especially if you are sick. The water vapor causes the buildup to loosen and make you feel less congested. Using hot water is preferable to tea or coffee, since their caffeine will dehydrate you, and that is the last thing you need when you are sick. In addition, sweating some can help you to remove some toxins from your body and hopefully get better sooner, and improve your overall health.

Hi Neelima, Thank you very much for the first and quick reply. I agree drinking enough water will helps us to stay healthy. Here I asked about the habit of drinking cold water or hot water. Normally people don't have the habit of drinking warm water after a meal. We do prefer to drink some warm water in winter season that also if there is much cool otherwise either we prefer to drink normal water or cold water. Take care and happy posting.

Hi neelimaravi, please limit your drinking water up to 2 liters per day because if you go up to 7 liters per day you will going to have water intoxication in the long run. Water is really good in our health but any excess is also too bad in our body. 2 liters per day is equal to 8 glasses of water/day. I can say this because one of my relatives suffered from water intoxication and she lost potassium, energy and most of all she was hospitalized for a month and it took her a year or so to recover her lost energy or back in her normal life.

Hi alok, If you have the habit of drinking cold water then just stick with that. There is no need to change your habit. After reading many responses and collecting information from others, I concluded that there is nothing wrong to drink any kind of water if you are used with the same. Our body will automatically be ready to accept our habit and change it accordingly. If you have the habit of drinking cold water then all of a sudden you change into warm water then your body will become confuse. So please stick one particular habit. Thanks you so much and have a great time in mylot.

yeah i heard it on the news and read a book about it. it is better to drink warm water or maybe hot tea after having a meal because the fat that we eat doesn't stick into our inside, just imagine and oil that is put inside the fridge, that will happens to the fat after drinking cold water from having a meal.

Thank you for the very helpful trivia. I did not know this. To add, I always drink cold water before and after a meal for several years now, especially if it is summer. Now that I have read what you said, I don't think I will continue my bad habit of drinking cold water after eating. From now on, I will just drink lukewarm or hot water.
