I use Norton antivirus but in freeware I suggest 1. AVG Free Edition 2. Avira Free 3. BitDefender 4. Avast Home ( but it's not recommended to use avast as it removes system files sometimes)

Trendmicro - I have used it for about 5 years with great success. You can purchase just anti-virus software all the way to a full suite of protection. It works well with any operating system. I never use anything else. I used to use McAfee but still go occasional viruses and trojans (of course this was years ago) since switching to trend micro I have had no problems. I can't compare anything else because I won't use anything else.

I know someone using avg free and has never had any problems. It also detects files that others tend to miss. These free programs only offer you basic protection though. If your going to use avg free I would also get spybot and malwarebytes antimalware. These two programs are both free and can help get rid of the spyware and malware programs.
