As I felt the reason for the slow down of my laptop is the overhearing, I installed a software called "Mobile meter" (which is freeware) in my laptop..Now the software shows that the temperature of the CPU is around 45-50 degree centigrade and the temperature of the HDD (Hard Disk Drive) is 50-57.I feel this is excessive heat. But I am not sure about the nominal temperature. Mine is HP Pavilion dv1000 notebook pc and I have installed the windows xp in the system. What could be the reason for the over heat. The fans are working fine..The system will start hang very often if the heat is much. How to bring down the heat.Is there any BIOS setting to adjust the heat?

If you don't want to have your laptop checked up at the moment, using a laptop cooler will help, that's what I did before when I experience excessive heat in my laptop and I was able to use my laptop normally again, excessive heat will shorten the life of your battery if not fry your board in additon to those frequent hangs, freezes and slow down you are experiencing. Regarding your bios setup, just make sure everything is at default.

If your laptop are doing a lot of extensive work like graphics designing, opening a lot of programs or gaming could really makes the laptop overheat as the processor are working very hard. But if you just doing normal thing then there could some problems inside usually some causes like this is dust that are blocking the airways of the laptop.Just consult it to reliable shop to check maybe it need internal cleaning.

I will not use those things that you have mentioned. But I will work with multiple tabs and windows .Very rarely, I will run the VLC media player. Now I have uninstalled some of the software that are not used by as frequently. There may be possibilities for my hard disk is having some problem. once a technician told about that. But at the time as the computer used to work well I did not pay much attention about that But I did not expect this much of heat will be there in the laptop. I am able to find the settings to control the temperature. But there may be some settings. I am not able find it..Thank for your response,,.

I think there's a setting in bios. You could use an usb laptop cooler or make one for yourself with an external power supply (I made both of them). It helps a lot but it's better to let the expert to check your laptop. I hope I can help.

I made a googe search to know about the BIOS settings if any. But I was not able to find anything related to my laptop model and make. I am using now a cool pad .Else I may not be able to work with the laptop due to the enormous hear generated. I did not expect that the hard disc and CPU temperature will come more than 50 degree. If I shut down the system for about 10-15 mintues, then the temperature is getting reduced and I am able to work.Else, I may not be able to work as the stytem starts hanging very often.Mostly the browser window is not responding , if the laptop is hot. Thanks for your response and the participation in this discussion.

I have a wierd suggestion but it might work! Why don't use an electric fan while using your laptop. this may help reduce the heat of your laptop faster than the cooler. One more thing...try to elevate your laptop about 1-2 inches to have more ventilation. That's how high my own laptop cooler (self made) it may help. God Bless! p.s. if you're going to elevate your laptop w/o a cooler, make sure that the stand you're going to use should have many holes.

My cool pad is having three fans . But as the fans are pushing the air from out side to inner of the fan there may not be much use in that. I saw discussion regarding this few days back.Normally the fans inside the laptop will expel the air from the inner of the laptop to the outer so that the heat is moving away from the laptop..But now, there is no possibility of circulation of air as both the fans forces the air opposite to each other.I should find the fan which sucks the air from the laptop, if any. Thanks for the updated information.

Are you doing cpu-intensive works? like audio/video encoding, etc.. This is commonly one of the many reasons why the cpu's temperature rises. A 50 degree temperature is just normal, but a 36-45 temp. is an ideal range for a cpu and 40-45 for your hardisk. I have some tips for you. 1. Clean out your fans 2. Get a cooling pad (definitely a huge help) 3. If you can, undervolt your processor and apply a thermal compound. I guarantee that the results will be impressive once you do these things. Good luck!

I used to work with multiple tabs and windows always.. But I will not use much graphic or even audio in my laptop as I don't like them much. Some time, the HDD temperature is going beyond the 60 degree. Now I have uninstalled some of the very rarely used software applications as unnecessary processes which are running in our system may slowdown the computer and well as the over heating of the computers..I have cool pad and I will allow it to run always so that the heat is maintained within the normal range. But i don't know the disassembling of hardware components and I will do iin the form of referrals. Thanks for your response

Those temps are not out of line. The dv1000 is a 2004 model though. It shipped with 512mb or RAM.... software uses much more memory these days. Check you resource usage. If it shows you are using more ram then you have, your computer is now swapping to the disk drive, and this will slow things down a lot. You can upgrade that model to 2GB of ram. It will also help to defrag your harddrive.

Mine is also 512 MB RAM only. But we don;t have installed any special applications in this system at present. Also I don;t know the procedure finding the resource usage. If you tell me the procedure or how and where to look for to know it, it will be helpful to me to resolve my issue. Its highly irritating that I need to shut down the system very often to reduce the heat, even after having the laptop cool pad. I have to work below a ceiling fan also to reduce the heat to some extent.Else I can not work for more than 40 minutes continuously. The problems are only in the recent days..Prior to these days, it was working fine without any problem and the speed was more. Now my system is working entirely in different manner.,Thanks for your response and the suggestion.

I just now checked the task manager. The CPU usage is not much and it is showing between 15%-50% and it shows more when the anti virus software is updating or if it scan ..the CPU usage is raising even 100% during this time. Else it is showing only less usage. Also I have removed some rarely used applications so that I can install them when ever need them. Still the laptop is generating that much of heat as I did not clean or do anything so far. Hope it will not get much heat after the cleaning .Thanks for the update.

You should be able to view the usage using the Windows Task Manager. I recently saw a windows xp sp3 system a family member was running on a toshiba laptop take up 400+MB of RAM after they had booted up, but before they ran anything. Upped them to 1.5MB of ram and their system runs much better for them now.

Hi hmrk, Your situation is same thing as our mylot member. His cpu over heating at 96 degree. i advised him to add fan or go to nearest service for furture information. In yours, Better you to uninstall that software n then try to install back. if the same thing happen check you fan connected. If not try to shutdown for several hours before start running. If still not respond, I think you have problem with your mother board. Try to ask person really know about this. Regards. C.M

Which is the software / driver responsible for running the fan ? I don't have any idea about that. Please let me know as which one am I need to install back? When compared to the other mylot member, mine is far better as the temperature here is only 60 deg..Will the installation of OS itself will help better? If so, I can format the system and the reinstall the operating system..if the problem is with the hardware components, then re-installation of OS may not help much I think. Thanks for the suggestion and participation in this discussion.

The only reason of your laptop's overheating is dust stuck inside its fans outlet on top. It needs to be serviced. Contact hardware maintenance of laptops. They will fix it and your laptop will always stay cool as a cucumber.

As you all are saying the same thing, I have to dismantle the back site doors of the laptop, If this is the only reason, then I will not bother much. Some are saying that there may be some problems in the hard disk for this over heating. This problems is only in the recent days. Earlier It was working fine without any problem. As we are in some what dusty area, there are more chances for that as like you have mentioned. Let me try to clean it at my own or with the help of the service center personal. Thanks for the suggestion and participation in this discussion.

If you bought the laptop for a long time, you could think about dismantle the back case and clean up the heat sink and fan, it always has a lot of dust over there and affect the efficient of heat dissipation.

My laptop is more than two and half years old and we have not open and clean the back of the laptop even a single time. As I have some fear in opening the laptop, I did not do that. At least I should let my laptop to the service center to clean the fan and the other components. Ours is dusty environment only.So there could be the dust ,blocking the ventilation slots of the laptop. As a final attempt, I should to that one,Else it may cause additional problem to the laptop. Thanks for the suggestion to my problem

Right now I am using the cool fan.Even after having the cooling fans, the heat is about 60 degree and the system is hanging very often, if we work more than 45 minutes with out giving any break to the system.I need to shut down the system at least once in an hour to reduce the heat .Most of the members are saying that the dust might be the main cause for this. Tomorrow or day after tomorrow, I will let my laptop to the service center and get it cleaned. We j have not cleaned it even a single time in the past two and half year.
