What time do you usually have your evening meal?

We always call it 'dinner' but I know it is called different things in different areas of the country and in different countries. We have our supper or dinner at 6:00p.m. and ,no, not like clock work. What time do you usually try to set down for the meal? And, do you try to have the entire family at this meal? Are there reasons why everyone is not available for this meal?

We call it supper here, I live in the south. Sometimes we use the word dinner, it just interchanges. As for when we eat, now that all depends. My husband and I live with his parents. We wait for his mom to get home from work, and that can be 12:30 (lunch time) or 6 or 7. Sometimes if she is going to be working a different schedule we eat before, or by ourselves depending. We try to eat before 8 PM which is when my father in law must start getting ready for work. Also, if my husband is at work I will wait for him before eating.

I see. So for the most part you wait for her to get home or eat alone?

Yes we wait, or if not my husband and I will eat together, or my husband, myself and his father... Of course we always feed the dogs and cat so if you can count them as eating together...

We don't have dinner together at our home (and I hate that). The kids and I usually have dinner between 8 and 8.30 because I do a little reading at around 9 and then go to bed. But now the kids are taking after their father and having dinner as and when they want. I'm trying to get them back to their schedule. My husband gets on the computer and watches television and sometimes has dinner before we do and sometimes later...depends on his hunger.

Yes, trying telling that to my husband! He can't stand the whining and complaining every time I try to nag and he asks me not to bug the kids! At one point we were constantly arguing about this and then I gave up.

FYI--It is important for kids to be on a schedule. If you had a family meeting and tried to work out a time you can all eat it would be better for all. And if you consistantly have the evening meal at a certain time you will find your hunger will coinside with that time as well.

Well, we generally have our supper at, somewhere between 9pm-10pm. Generally we have the whole family at the meal. But recently since my sister shifted to Mumbai, for her graduation, there are now just three of us. Usually mom cooks, I set the Table and then wash the dishes.

That is nice. I also set the tables and wash the dishes. On rare occasions I even cook a dish or two. My cooking is not very good but quite edible.

I usually try to have dinner ready between 6 and 6:30pm. When all my girls were home, I did try to have them all here at the same time. Sometimes that was impossible because of one or the other being involved in sports etc but usually we did eat together. Now it is just me and one daughter still at home. We always eat at the same time but it is not unusual for her to eat in the living room in front of the computer or tv.

it's pretty casual here and open for change. Tonite I had planned steak and cheese grinders. She wasn't "feeling it" so we ended up having frozen chicken popcorn, fries and veges...totally not much better than takeout. We don't do it often so it's ok, I had a lot of work to do also and was almost grateful for the break.

Hello celticeagle! Since my husband has to work at 5pm we usually have our dinner every 4:30 pm. Too early, right?hehehe..When I was still in the philippines, we call it "panihapon" (dinner) but here in the US we call it dinner. In addition, when I was in the Philippines, we ate together and the usual reason why others can't join us was because of work or they had to do something very important.

We eat like that sometimes. I think when folks are grown it doesn't matter as much. When you are hungry is good rule of thumb.

I try to cook dinner around 5:30 or 6:00pm. If my husband is going to be late then I will wait until right before he gets home to start cooking. I like for us all to eat as a family so we will wait on him to eat until he gets home.

This is a really good discussion and I am sure that everyone has dinner since food is important to survive, since you have to have energy to do everyday tasks, and I love to eat,and sometimes I love to eat more than I should, and usually around here we have our dinner between five pm and six pm,sometimes it varies depending on what time I get home from work if I am working,or what time my mother gets home from work, since on some days she works later than others, and what we are having for supper since some days my mother brings home food when she is on her way home, have a great day, good luck with your life, and all of your mylotting goals, and Happy Posting.

We usually have dinner around 10pm. Our family consists of my parents and me. We sit down together to have dinner. My father is a busy man and so that is the best time to have a family discussion. Although we have our dinner in more or less 15 minutes but we spend around half an hour at the dinner table just chatting and spending time together.

I've always referred to my evening meal as dinner myself. I usually have dinner between 6-7pm, although this routine changes slightly on special occasion (for example, if I am going out for an evening meal). Because I currently live by myself, I tend to eat alone. However, on some nights, I swing by the parent's house and have dinner with them or invite company back to my place to prevent having a depressing meal for one :D Personally, if I have dinner early in the day (about 2pm, for example), I find that I snack more in the evening and feel less fulfilled because where I've already had dinner, I settle for a lunch-type meal and it leaves me less satisfied. Weird I know.

I try to have it ready by 6:30-7. This is because my fiance don't get off work until 6 so i started right after he gets home. this is just in case he ends up being late.

In general, we eat dinner at 6 p.m. Of course, there are times when that isn't the case, but not too often. We do not all sit at the table though, for a few reasons. One, my kitchen and table are just too small to accommodate my entire family. Two, this is the time during which my husband and I discuss things that have happened during the day, things that need to be done, and whatever else we feel the need to talk about. Three, this is the time when the kids get to talk to each other a little more and discuss things they want to discuss among themselves. They look at it as private discussion time, even though I can normally hear everything that is going on. Many families use this meal time as a time for the whole family to talk, but in my household, the kids talk to me when we are in the car before and after school, and they talk to my husband while they are engaged in some activity with him. They all have time to talk to us on a one-on-one basis as well when they want to discuss something but don't want their siblings to hear.

I think that is a good idea. For the siblings to talk more. And one-on-one is so important as well.

HI Celticeagle, I should call evening meal as dinner and for me, I have a practice to have my dinner at around 7pm,that is when my husband and my son are all ready for our dinner. We will sit and have out dinner together.Enjoying our meal together. Sometimes when my in-laws were at home, then we will eat together too. But most of the time, I will eat together with my husband and my son. Only in certain circumstances whereby my husband is back home late, then I will have dinner with my son first.
