Why is it so hard for people to believe?

I had started a discussion yes, entitled 'Ghost, Goblins, & Witchery'. Which got some very interesting responses. Thank you all. However with my mind and my nature, I am curious to know why so many people think the way they do. Some responses were that they believe in God (so do I), but didn't believe in magic or evil powers. Now I know we all have our different beliefs and different religions. I am not knocking any ones beliefs or their religion, so please don't make it so. I just want to know how some can believe in some things and not others. Examples would be: The power of healing? being spirit filled? (yes, I am non denominational). In the Bible itself it states all about Lucifer aka Satan aka The Devil. Now wouldn't every thing consists of 'good & bad'? Which leads me to the religion of Wiccan. People that don't understand it, automatically think 'evil'. That is not the case at all. It is plain and simple a belief/religion of a different kind. Ok, I got my little rant out. Now your thoughts?

Most people are afraid of stepping out of their little boxes because that would risk discovering they might be wrong. It would be like being on the titanic, everything they counted on and believed would now bring questions and doubt. As with any type of relationship, to include those with the Divine, we feel more secure if we know what to expect from that relationship. Many people need to believe in the devil, in evil, as a means of explaining the pitfalls of life. Wiccans on the other hand are about responsibility. We accept the responsibility for out actions instead of trying to place blame on some dark deity. I generally don't use the terms good and evil, instead I use helpful and harmful. You and I understand the importance of balance in all things. Some choose to close their eyes and not be active in bringing about positive change in the world. Some, like us are active participants.

You are welcome sweetie. I once read an analogy about a group of people being taken hostage and locked inside a cave. They were forced to face the wall at all times and could never step outside. There came a time where the captors left and yet most of the captives refused to even turn around, much less leave the cave. Fear is a might task master. So is change. I feel as long as a person is happy with their path and are not harming others, let them be. I have been to many types of churches and studied many paths. I truly believe that there are many paths but we are responsible for finding our own. Love and light, Carolyn/Lady Kiya

I wanted to add that I believe each path has something to teach us. Confucianism does not contain many of the elements of other religions, such as institutions and priests. Instead, its institutions are those of society, family, school, and state, and its priests are parents, teachers, and officials. Taoism's focus on nature and the natural order complements the societal focus of Confucianism, and its synthesis with Buddhism, is the basis of Zen. The concept of a personified deity is foreign to Taoism, as is the concept of the creation of the universe. Thus, they do not pray as Christians do as they believe there is no God to hear the prayers or to act upon them. They seek answers to life's problems through inner meditation and outer observation.... Each believer's goal is to become one with the Tao. Central to the path of Wiccan Shamanism, is communion with Nature. Practices include celebrating the cycles of sun and moon; spiritual healing; honoring ancestors; working with animal totems; plant spirits; and other Nature spirits; ritual work at sacred sites; drumming/sacred rhythm making; ritual dancing and chanting; work with dreams; visions; trance/meditations; and personal and collective mythology. "The Divine is honored as both Unity and Multiplicityā€¯ (Goddesses, Gods, Elements, nature Spirits, Ancestors, Guides). The Native American paths taught me the importance of spirit in our lives. There are lessons that are available to us in the teachings of the plants, the animals, the seasons, in all things. They taught me the value of family and of responsibility to one another. Christianity taught me the importance of relationship with the Divine. And yes, I could go on.

Hi Chey Honestly those kinds of things might exist, i have heard many weird things happening, people been in situations and all but i don't want to believe in them though they might exist, i just tend to ignore them, it is better for me to keep away from these sorts of stuff, i would not much think of it unless i encounter something weird myself there are many who say they don't believe in such kind of stuffs but i don't say anything, i don't think about it either, it is best to be left alone, we don't know what other things dwell out in a place called world, but for one thing ... i don't understand the difference between a spirit and a ghost, i am religious myself although not much... i just believe what is there in the bible and nothing else, they do talk about spirits and all but ghosts aren't mentioned anywhere, yeah but devil is something different from ghosts, so i can't say much... neways have a nice day chey, probably ghosts don't exist.

Chey, I responded to the last discussion but really wanted to thank you for pursuing this discussion. I learned a lot through this and will be forever grateful to you! I think there are many forces pulling in this universe. Good and Evil are just the major two that are easy to spot. I feel there is so much to learn from all things on this planet. I think if you look for evil, you can find it anywhere around you. I feel that if you look for good, it is right there with you as well. When I look at my own lives ups and downs I do not really think of them as good or evil but more like good for me or bad for me. I think there is a balance to every force.

Oh you are quite welcome Jody. I have a mind that just doesn't stop. Yes, good and evil does exist, no one can truly deny that fact. The world has to balance out or it would seize to exist.

Its written in every chapters of the bible that evil come along with good. As God can be someone or something, so does the devil. Whatever religion we get hooked at, its just the matter of our personal beliefs of what is good and what is evil. Others think that when God destroys Sodom and Gomorrah,(and all its children) He is not a good God. Other's would think the other way around, if God kills all the adults, who do you think happen to all the children? Who will take care of them? Still its a matter of perception to ones belief, I think.

I believe in all that stuff, but don't think we should seek things out, the more you seek it out, the more open you become to it. The bible is very clear about how you should treat such things, thats why I believe all these things are real, wouldn't be wanred about things that are not threats to us.

Thank you for your input. No, I wouldn't go out of my way looking for things I shouldn't, but won't close my mind to things that might be so.

I believe there is more to the world than we can experience with our 5 senses. What does that exactly mean? I don't know. I think that religion is a way for us to try and make sense of that. I don't believe there is any "true" religion. And that's about all the thinking I can manage on the subject until I wake up!

I totally agree with you. There is a saying that some people have a 6th sense. Now exactly what that means, I'm a bit foggy on.

hi, I don't attend your former discussion, however, I just curious about the topic concerning witchery or wiccan. In fact, it's not a strange thing to me, because the authors of the fictions I have read always adopt the elements including wiccan to spice up their story though I don't if there is a conspicuous difference between the western one and the Chinese one. You needn't be worried about others' perceptions of your belief as long as we know that it's just another expression of something amazing. Just like you can't be able to let everyone like the orange, it's people's rights to choose what they like, however, we are individual personalities, right?

Oh Wiccan is not my belief. I have friends who are Wiccan, and don't doubt their beliefs at all. I am open minded to all. Yes, we are all different, unique beings in one way or another.

I'm a catholic and I do believe in ghost and miracles. Some people don't believe in ghost or other supernatural phenomenon because they did not experience it first hand. For them to see is to believe. But, isn't religious faith all about believing things related to religion you haven't and probably would never "sense" your whole life? To think that one religion is better than other is nonsense, since all religion are similar, differing only in the setting and context. You mentioned Wiccan religion, what exactly is its beliefs?
