I know this is going to sound very dense (and before you ask yes I am blonde!) but my kitten which I thought was femaile is actually male! I asked the owner for a female kitten and never thought to double check, then Mika was sitting on the floor cleaning today and now I can say with certainty he is a boy! I don't know what to make of it he is soo cute and such a character and of course I still love him. It was such a shock to find out he was a boy. Has anything like this happened to you before? How would you feel about it?

This has happened to me too! When I first got my dog Dillie, she was still a puppy and her belly button was an outie. Because of that, we all thought she was a boy, until we took her to the vet and the vet told us that he is actually a she! We didn't have to change her name though. I named her Dill after Tommy's brother from Rugrats, and so we just addied the "ie" to make the name more feminine. On a side note, when I first read your discussion title, I thought you were referring to Mika the British singer LOL! My mistake!

We did name him (her) after Mika the UK singer but thought it worked quite well for a female. Luckily works for boys too!

Well, I've owned many cats in a very short period of time [ We had 10 at one point!]. I don't think we ever mixed up their genders though. Male cats are a bit more hyperactive than female cats from what I have experienced, but don't let that put you off, they still enjoy a cuddle.

He is certainly hyperactive! He loves his cuddles too though, the only thing I was concerned about with males is they spray and can wonder off for days. I will still love him, he is too cute not to fall in love with.

Yes, tat happened to once with on of my litters. Somehow thought there was 2 females and a male.. granted one male and the female looked very much alike. maybe I picked up female twice when I did initial assessment of gender.. Anyway, the male in question here was actually quite a small statured cat to begin with. So, it wasn't until he was about 7 months of age (and lucky for me he had not received a name yet.) that I noticed his head start to get bigger as Tom cats usually do. That Is when I realized she was a he. And not too long after that he told me his name. Yes, you read tat right, he told me his name.. I was looking at him and all of a sudden the letters LJ popped into my head. Almost as if someone had said them out loud.. so I looked at him and said what does that stand for? Little John.. His head came up and he came right over to me.. I currently have 2 boys right now that are about 6 months and no name.. I am waiting to see if they tell me.. but I am starting to feel bad when I call them boy 1 and boy 2. And there brother Ben has had a name for months and already responds to it.. :(

My grandmother took her cat to the vet to have her fixed. They called her at home later that day and explained that the cat was a boy not a girl so my grandmother said well fix him anyway.

Lol!! How funny! Male or female shouldn't really change, female cats are said to be sweeter but it's not always true, I really met male cats sooo sweet! As long as he's in your house, you cuddle and treat him well, he'll just be a puffy toy. :) Congrats on your new kitten!

It is very difficult to tell whether a kitten is a boy or girl, no matter which method you choose. I decided my back and white, Tux, was a male--until I got a surprise one day. But I didn't change the name.

thats happened to me a couple of times but ive never had a gender preference on cats i love all of them the same. so the first time this happened was about 16 years ago we got a super fluffy kitten from a friend well we had made a vague guess that he was a girl but once he went to the vet they informed us he was a boy. then only a couple months ago one of my cats had 3 kittens which we thought were two boys and a girl but when they were about 8 weeks old it became obvious it was three veeerrryyy rambunctious boys. i must say my boys are more cuddly than the girls.

Well we never really had that problem with cats, but at one point I had a rabbit that we thought was a boy...named him Boo from To Kill a Mockingbird, and rabbits are known for reproducing often. We also had a female, so we took him to get fixed which doesn't seem too common. The vet called us two days later and told us our boy rabbit that was actually a girl passed away. I guess they didn't care enough to be observant either. As far as caring if I found out my pet was the opposite sec than what I thought, it's still the same pet I know and love...Doesn't change much, just a name which is easily adjusted.
