If you lost access to the internet would you miss it?

November 3, 2009 2:57pm CST
I was wondering today how I would manage if I suddenly couldn't use my computer or access the internet and just the thought of it fills me with horror! My computer is like another part of me, I use it everyday. For work and for pleasure. Just simple things like finding directions or researching a topic for my kids homework to help them or buying gifts for people. All these things are important. I use the internet to sell goods that I don't want anymore and to look up postcodes of peoples addresses that I don't know the postcode. Its also a great media for keeping in contact with family and friends and I have my online friends that I can talk to. So if I lost this what would I do? I think I would find it very hard to convert back to how my life was without the internet. I guess my house would be a lot more cluttered with phone directories and maps.

Oh my gosh! If I lost the internet, I don't know what I would do! I use it not only to connect with people, but also to network, blog, and learn information at a quick pace. I don't think I could go to a library and try and find out all the information, when it can be easily accessed right at my fingertips. The computer is literally the other half of my mind. In all honesty, if the internet ever shut down, the entire world would fall to pieces.

I only got the internet 6yrs ago and now I couldn't be without it. I try and visualise how I managed before and I have to say some simple tasks where a lot harder or took so much longer. I guess if the whole system crashed overnight we would be forced to get used to it, but I know I would find it extremely difficult

Hi: I used the internet to read the news, read my mails, to work, to find some research for my university, to be connected with my family and friend wherever they are. Internet it's my main source of information and entertainment, i use facebook to play some of my favorite games. Basically i would not know what to do without internet.

i would definitely hate it! i use the internet every day for both work inside and outside of my house plus, i would miss hearing what my friends are up to. i was in the hospital for 4 days several years ago and the minute i got home, i had to go on.

I guess there is no one here to give a counter arguement. Lol We all seem to be completely hooked with using the much valued internet. I thought when I made this discussion that maybe someone would feel differently to me, but it seems the internet has become such a huge tool globally that the whole world would quite literally go to bits if it was lost. Thanks for the response

this is actully funny i think us as adults used to say man what would we do? tell our kids how we didnt have the things that they have this days. and how we would have to make up games when we were younger. but i know when our internet goes out my wife freaks out over it. and then if its down for long awhile we get bored real fast, yeah i would be lost without the net.

Your point is a good point. I limit my kids with the time they spend infront of screens yet I would be lost without the computer. Slightly hypocritical maybe. But in the same sense maybe I love it so much because I didn't have it as a child so I am making up for lost time

lose access to the internet - I have lost access to the Internet someday.
It is obvious that I will miss the life when I am surfing on the Internet. In my opinion, I guess most people here will miss the Internet if they have lost the access someday. Everyday, I will tend to open my laptop in the morning and then begin the labor of a new day. You see, the computer and the Internet have been parts of my daily life, entertainment and work. If I have lost the access to the Internet, I may have any other chances to do but to go to bed. Of course, I will miss myLot and all friends here if I lose access to myLot someday.

Hi Skye Blues: I know what you are talking about. We need internet those days, because everything is on the internet. You can probably come back like things were without the internet but all would be slower than with the helo of Internet. This is the key of our societies nowadays and i hope we can continue using this at least until there would be something better. Thanks for your discussion. Have a nice day.

I definitely would. I don't have internet connection during weekends because I have to go back to the provinces and I really feel helpless during those days. It becomes a detox for me though since I won't have to think about work for a while. But really I am useless without internet connection, it definitely has become a commodity in modern living :)

I did lose my connection for about 5 days awhile ago due to computer failure. I ended up going around friends and family to use theirs. I know thats awful when you need something so badly, but to me it is like an extension of me.

I would definitely miss it. I have been on the internet for over 12 years and it's a huge part of my life. I love the ease of use, the social interactions, the information overload. Of course, I'd go back to my old ways if it were gone, but I sure would miss all this!

Yes, Because that is how I make my extra money is on the internet. When it is late in the day before I can get on the computer I feel like I get behind on my work until I can access my accounts.

Definitely!!! i am very much of an internet-dependent person so it would break my world to suddenly get dewired.. It appened to me twice already. first time was when we decided to apply for a new and better dsl connection on another company. it was too painful that time but i just told myself that it would just be for a couple of days and after, i'd have a way way better connection. the second one was only recently when we got flooded. all lines of cables, landlines, and internet were cut off. it was really devastating that i couldnt get online. my life was shattered (seriously)...i just told myself that at least my laptop was safe and i dont need to buy another..i was still lucky that only the internet connection got lost in the flood and not my laptop. :D

I couldn't live without the internet. I have other sites that I use to make money on, and without the internet, I would be out of luck. I also use the internet for my job searches. I have been unemployed for more than 14 months, and if I didn't have internet access, a lot of my links to employment would be gone. I also have friends that I only e-mail for one reason or another, and no internet would mean no more talking to them. I can't remember what my life was like before the internet, and I don't think I could go back to that kind of life.

It's true I would miss it, but I did without it before the cell phones and computers, and I would just have to be ready to go back if I had to, to the 'old fashion' way of doing things!

Yes, i will miss it. Because, internet has become a part of my daily habit. If i dont surf internet, i just feel an uneasy urge for net. It bears omnidirectional types of knowledge and if someone wants to utilize this, he can never finish that. I cannot think off without internet even a single day.

Internet is a major part of my life at the moment and this thought that what would happen if it suddenly ceased to exist has crossed my mind. There would be the prospect of depression and since I am prewarned about it I would fight it out and work on alternatives that would keep me happily occupied although it would be easier said than done. But one has to survive and I would certainly fight to survive without getting depressed.

no, i can't lost access to internet. chatting in the internet is the only way i can communicate with my kids abroad. its the only way i can ask them how's their day, give them advice when they have problems, greet them everyday. internet is a big help to families like us whose relatives are living and working abroad.
