Do you buy used books?

Do you buy used books? If you do, where do you usually buy them? Would you buy a used book online? Are these books generally educational or for pleasure? I generally buy used books in local used book stores. I find them to be great places to find books to read and share with my friends. I travel frequently, so reading is an important stress reliever for me.

I have not bought any books for a long time, and I sort of vary between used and new books. I do not like pocket books as they are too small print - so I try to get the large print paper backs. I also love hard cover books but find them expensive and try to find them in second hand stores like Value Village. The trouble is I never mark my books up with hi liners as what happens to books I see at Second Hand places, so even though it would save me money, I prefer to get them new - but of course, on sale and of course, if I have a gift certificate for that book store. I might add that if people would not mark their used books with hi liners and use pencil that can be erased, many of us would buy used books, because when I buy a book it is for keeps.

I feel if I get a book or get one as a gift, and maybe do not want it then if I give it to someone else or donate it to Value Village or a Second Hand store, I want the new owner to have it in as good a condition as I did when I got it. Oh and I have tons of books on how to write, and at least fifty of the classics. I really should get some more book cases. Do not have enough.

I agree with you in regards to the marking up of books. I have tons of hard cover books that I use. Believe me, if someone asks me about a subject, I probably have a book on it.

I buy dozens of used books every week because I resell them for profit. My favorite places to shop for used books are the local D.A.V. thrift store and the public library's Friends of the Library sales--the D.A.V. will sell you 15 paperback books (trade and mass market) for just $1, and the library's sale books are all generally a quarter to fifty cents each. It's an amazingly easy way to make some extra cash, since the profit margin is so large. If I'm looking for used books for myself, there are only a couple of local stores I'm willing to shop at. There's also a corporate entertainment store in the area that sells used books, but while I'm totally willing to sell books to them, I refuse to shop there. Their prices are ridiculously high compared to the local stores. The independent store less than a block down the road from them charges a flat $2 for every hardcover book they sell that's already out in paperback, and $10 for new hardcovers that aren't in paperback. On the other hand, the corporate store has most of their hardcovers priced at around 50% of the cover price. Why shop there when you can get the same older book for a penny plus shipping on Amazon? I do buy used books online occasionally. More often than not, though, I just get books from the library when I want to read them. It really saves on the out-of-pocket expenses. Sometimes I get books through PaperBackSwap, too. Unfortunately, a lot of the titles I want are more recent ones, so they've got huge waiting lists there.

That is great. I like the idea of recycling books and perhaps creating a business. When I was a kid, there was a local used book shop near my house. This book shop fed my imagination more than anything. I spent countless hours searching through the Sci-Fi section. Somedays, I think I learned more there than in school.

I too am used book reseller...and i can recount almost identical experiences with doing it over the last ten years. Kudos to you for being part of the solution, and making some profit for yourself as well.

In our place a road called Avenue road is full of second hand book stores. People will go there, sell their books and buy their requirements. I too go there, buy what I want at less rates. Sometimes we get rare books also there. Apart from that there is a book store called Book Warm. You can buy book there, whether new or second hand, after reading, you can return the book to him and get some money.

I'm with you on finding cheap books. I kind of like the idea of the internet in selling books, but I'm also kind of nostalgic in liking to feel and handle the book. Heck, I usually read half the book before I leave the store.

I applaud you. I just like to have my own books. I do love the library. I think that I have always had good experiences in libraries.

I see no problem with buying used books at all. I actually prefer it since it is cheaper than buying new ones. There are a few used book stores that I frequent here where I live. I like the fact that they all have this credit system. I can bring in my own books and earn store credits which really helps out a lot because I'm able to save up to 80% at some of the stores. I do some online shopping for books but most of the time it's just for school related materials. I think I've only bought books onl

geez...I'm getting pretty good at cutting myself off lately... Anyways, I was saying that I've only bought non-school related books online once and that was through ebay. That was only because I couldn't find the books anywhere else in town.

Hello friend. I have never bought used books, but I did sell some of my old books to people who recycle them. I sell the papers we have booked for the family as well. We get some small money for the selling of them.

I agree sometimes. I really want to think about the quality of the book. That I think you have to be careful about.

I sometimes buy used books in second shops, because that is much cheaper than buying new books all the time. A second hand shop is a great place to find old books that you can no longer buy in the other shops. When I was a nursing student I used often bought used books instead of new books, because the new books are so expensive. Students who already finished their education often want to sell their books, and I found a great website where students can buy and sell used books. I also sold my old books there. Sometimes it is also possible to buy used books at the library, and I have often bought books there.

As long as the book is in good condition there is very little difference in getting a new one other than the price. You can find used books online quite cheap.

i buy lots of used books - if i just want some general reading matter i buy them from charity shops and sometimes give them back after i'm finished with them (i am not going to spend £6 or £8 on a new paperback that i will only read once). if i am after something specific i might get lucky in a charity shop but am more likely to buy online. i don't buy new books very often - only if that is the only way to get a particular book - i think at least in this country they are overpriced. oh and once i bought a book in a charity shop for about 50p - it was very unusual so i looked it up on the internet and found out it was worth £16. which was fun to find out but not very useful because i intend to keep it not sell it.

Books are expensive and overpriced everywhere. I will usually only buy a new book, if I have a discount or coupon. I have a stack of books to read right now; got to have something to learn.

sure, i bought a lot of used books for the high scool , from other older students of other years, also now i buy used books for the university, books used by older students, sometimes you can find inside some notes, so it's useful to buy used books when you need them for school, they're more important than new books, with notes you can understand faster and better.

All the books I buy are used, I get them at second hand stores and second hand book shops. There is one in town, the prices are a bit higher than in second hand stores but the books are generally better. I definitely like to get them second hand, don't have much money and you never know if it'll be a good book or not.

I agree that many new books are just too much money. As much as I read, I have to do something to save a little money.

While doing B.Tech I used to purchase used books and sometimes I got them through my seniors. Untill book is in good condition, I think there is no harm in using old books.

Hi, I used to buy new books when it was not so expensive. But now with the prices up, I go in for used books. I realised that it does not make any difference. The print for reading is in there. If the outer cover is spoilt, just cover it and stick it up.

Yes, I often buy used books. I would sometimes get them on line from Amazon and I have been known to go to car boot sales and other sales here in the UK. What I find useful, is that when I have read them, I had the choice to sell them on-line (usually Amazon) if I don't want to keep them. - Derek

Like many other things I purchase, I also buy books that have been pre-owned, especially if it is a particularly rare book that is out of print, or a book that is incredibly cheap and interests me. However, the only time I will refuse to purchase a book that isn't brand new is if it is in terrible condition (crumpled covers, torn pages), or if it has been scribbled and jotted in. For me, I have no problem with buying pre-owned, and very often prefer buying used over new. Pre-owned is cheaper, and sometimes there isn't even any evidence that such an item had been used before because it is in such mint condition. Things like DVDs, CDs, Games and even Clothing, I've all bought pre-owned before because of how much of a bargain they have been compared to their brand new counter-parts or how immaculate their condition is. I've never understood people who fear buying pre-owned goods as though they carry some sort of invisible infection or disease. If it's in good condition and at a good price, buy it.
