Promoting Blogs

I was wondering if there is any effective way of promoting my blog, all I could come up with was posting links here and there which takes up too much of time. I don't care about the demographics details much. I only want blog visitors to be active and increase.
Can anyone give me a few ways to promote a blog please?
And ya, one more thing. Can I post my blog link here when I'm starting my discussion? I think not, because somewhere I read that promoting referral links is not allowed on myLot discussions and responses.

Promote your blog on your profile. You can tell us here what your blog is about, and stimulate interest and say, "The link is on my profile" I will be watching this discussion to see what else you learn.

I think you can send your links to some forums, and you can send your blog link on myspace etc. just try it. maybe if will be helpful.
