Is there a specific "flavor" to a devil's food cake? I know it appears chocolate, but is it? Is there an specific flavor like chocolate or is it just a "cakey" flavor? If I mix milk chocolate frosting with a devils food cake mix.. what will the flavor be? I am makign something new for T-day and I bake a devils food cake, and include the frosting... but I don't want conflict of flavors... chocolate and only chocolate cause the cakes will be later dipped in chocolate. Thanks for any suggestions

All devil's food means in a cake mix is that it is very dark chocolate, more intense than the regular kind. There would be no conflict there!

No worries devils food is just a deep flavor. It is very much chocolate. It is just chocolate with a little extra richness. They will be perfectly find dipped in in chocolate. Cakes dipped in chocolate sounds really good. I would love to taste that I bet they will be really good.

It is just chocolate cake. It isn't a dark chocolate or a milk chocolate. It was my mom's favorite. In fact if she had lived, I would have made a Devil's food cake last Monday for her birthday.

Hi, coffeebreak. I think this flavor can taste more stronger in the chocolate texture. It is a darker version of the actual chocolate. I have tried the Devil's Food snack cakes.. They are okay.. But they taste like dark chocolate.

Hi coffeebreak. Devil's food cake is chocolate cake, sort of half way between a milk chocolate and a dark chocolate. It combines the sweetness of the milk chocolate with the richness of the dark. If you had 3 pieces of cake, one of each, you would see and taste the difference. By itself, most people would just see and taste it as chocolate cake. You can't hardly go wrong in combining chocolates. Look at tortes which frequently combine several type of chocolate. Your frosted devil's food cake, dipped in chocolate sounds divine, and a wonderful indulgence. If you would feel better knowing for sure, pass each of us a piece and we'll be happy to let you know

Thanks so much for that clarification. I always wondered the difference in the chocolates. Now I start my quest for my cake balls! Thanks so much!
