Numb tongue

The roomie, after the burger last night, ate a handful of sunflower seeds. Then her tongue went numb. She woke up in the middle of the night and did it again, and it went numb again. Then today we went to a restaurant with her mom for our birthdays, and after the first bite, her tongue went numb and she felt a bit dizzy and stomach upset. She did finally feel better and ate about half the food. We are wondering if she might've developed an allergy to sunflowers and they might be cooking with sunflower oil. We will talk to her doc if it happens again or when she goes on the 30th to see him.

That sounds like a real possibility. It also sounds like each exposure is worse. I hope that is wrong, because sunflower is everywhere. The other thought, might even be more likely, is that the sunflower seeds were cooked in corn oil and the restaurant using corn oil. That is actually more likely. Corn allergy seems to be on the rise everywhere and corn is everywhere, in cleaning products, fragrances, food and subtle other places.

we read every where for corn because of my severe corn allergy - so I know the sunflower seeds were not cooked in corn oil. I suspect that the oil the restaurant used might've been sunflower or a mix of sun and safflower oils (a common mix actually.)

I had a tingle on my tongue as well but lucky for me I was getting ready to take my brother in law to the clinic for some tests he had to have when he first came to live with us this was to establish a doctor for him. While I was at the clinic I realized I wasn't well. As it turned out I was in the middle of having a heart attack. I wouldn't take this tongue thing too lightly after what I know. I think she should be telling her doctor immediately, it is possible to have mini heart attacks and not know it. This tongue thing is one of the warning signs.

she wasn't having any kinds of problems until she ate the sunflower seeds and after she ate the fried foods at the restaurant - each time the feeling passed pretty quick, but she's going to call the doc if it happens again

yeah, I want her to get tested or at least talk to the doc, but I can't make her do what she doesn't want to do - but we won't get more before the surgery...

That is so weird. I'd say you're probably right. How odd.

It does indeed sound like she developed a mild allergy to sunflower seeds. Doctor will figure it out.

maybe after she gets done with all this other stuff, she'll go to an allergist and get that figured out

I hope it is nothing serious. If it keeps doing that don't think i'd wait that long to see about it.

In the meantime, make sure she avoids them! If it's like some allergies, it could kill her!!! I'm not sure, but those which "suddenly develop" seem most prone to this result! Maggiepie WHERE ARE any OF OBAMA'S RECORDS?!?

well, they would be off her diet anyway until surgery, and probably afterward too for a while, but we do have to watch the foods cooked at restaurants, she started having the problem after eating the fried foods at the Chinese place

well, since she had surgery, sunflower seeds are off her diet for a while, we didn't ask, I really think she needs to go to an allergist, but she'll put that off as long as she can...
