I am working and living in Shanghai, one of the big cities in China. I choose to live here because I think there are more opportunities in cities. But after several years, I am getting tired of the busy life here. Every morning, I get up quite early and have to spend about 2 hours on the way to my office, since tht traffice is too bad during rush hours. I just had quick lunch in some fast food restaurant every day, which I extremely dislike. As the living expense keep increasing in Shanghai, I am wondering if I should go back to my hometown, a small city in central China. I would like to know what you will choose, big city or small city? Thank you for your response.

Of course ,the small city ,if possilbe , the town is best, I don't know why so many people move to Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou ,these so called big city, so rush, so noise, do you feel your life is happiness except the a little earning.

When my work, the source of my earning a living, is in the city, i will have no choice but to live nearby. When after my working years age, i would want to live in a smaller city where there will be less traffic, less people and less violence and be surrounded with natural scenery ~ hills, wide plains, forest, landscapes. But if given the choice to work in a small city, i would grab it! I like to live in a not so crowded neighborhood. I don't like it when i look out my window and i see my neighbor's roofs or their livingroom direct beside my window - just as most crowded big cities are. It is nicer to see your favorite tree blooming when you look out the window or your ducks swimming on your pond. :-)

Well, I tend to live in a medium city. It means that it should have the convenient facilities but just bigger size than small city. Actually, big city would be very hard to go to work because the traffic is always in a jam. Small city is convenient because it's fewer people but the facilities would not that completed.

I would definitely choose a small city. I grew up in a small town and went to university in a big city. Life is slower and people are not as grumpy in small towns. I feel relaxed and at home in small towns.

living in small city or big city is just due to yourself.just live where you feel happy. living in small city you can enjoy your life absolutely:wake up late in the morning, have rich breakfast cooked by yourself, walk to work, and most important,to have more time with your family.then you also will have some trouble that will not meet in big city:fewer work and progression opportunity, irregular life style, not so fair competition. balance the gain and lose, then make the decision. besiege a city——by a famous chinase writer

I hope you can have nice mood everyday.

If i have a nice job in the small city,I will choose to live in the small city, where traffic is better, population is less. But now,I live in GuangZhou a big city in the south of china.I find it is also a good choice for me because i live with my family.

There might be more things to do in a big city. Still, I would rather live in a small city. Bonds and relationships seem to be closer. You know the people more in small cities versus big ones. Crime seems to be more of an issue in big cities. I am more comfortable living in a small city.

Man..It all depends on how we want to be..Whatever we do or wherever we stay..,we'll get bored after sometime..That's quite natural..But if u really want to hold on and overcome it you can...But make u r capable of that..Figure out where do you want to be and find a good solution.. My Opinion: I like villages more than cities..But villages cant help much with our income or earnings..

hi,kathy! nice to meet you and welcome to mylot! I'm a Chinese too and I've heard a lot of boring and hard life in big cities like shanghai and beijing. I really don't think I will be fond of spending two hours on the way to work.how many things we can do by saving such a long time. it is true that there are much more opportunities in big cities.but perhaps those opportunities don't belong to most of the normal migrants who are looking for them in the big cities.it's very crude but it is also true... besides, the housing prices in shanghai are so high which is major problem of living in it... anyway, hope you can make a right desicion and live a happy life! have a nice day!

I feel the same way. I live in NYC and haven't lived anywhere else. So, I'm used to so much noise and people, and just a really hectic lifestyle. When I went to visit Alamosa, a small city in Colorado it was such a drastic change for me because there weren't many people or many places to see, and in order to go from one place to a next you had to have a car since everything wasn't in walking distance. So, in that regard I like a bigger city because of mass transportation (subway especially.) The only cool thing was I could see the stars at night in the sky; in NYC, there's so much light pollution so it's impossible to see anything in the sky.

I live on the edge of a coastal town. I have views of the countryside and it is a four mile to the beach. It is a five minute walk to the shops and the nearest supermarket is a fifteen minute walk away. It is a shame when the traffic jams. It can make getting to and from the office tiring. Living expenses in major cities can be high. I would love to visit Shanghai one day. The coast is so lovely. I think if you visit your old home town you will be able to consider whether you should stay in Shanghai or move back there. Good luck deciding. I would prefer to live in a small city than a big city. My favorite place to live is in the countryside. I think that by the coast would be out of my budget but I can dream.

I was born and grow up in Guangzhou. It is also one of the big cities in China. I like Guangzhou because I am one of the citizens. But you are right, living in the big city means you have to adjust to the busy lifestyle. I think when I retire, then perhaps I will consider to live in the small city because I love to have relaxing life. But right now it is the time for me to work and earn for our future. So I have no choice. I love China

Hi, your discussion is what I'm thinking about these days, I live in Shanghai too, I really get tired of the life here, it seems like everyday you work under big pressure, and it's so crowd here, I have to get up early and eat my breakfast at bus, I don't konw why I choose this life, and the house here is really expensive, and traffice is bad, and I don't like the weather here, so I am still thinking if I should go back to a small city.

I like to live in big city, beacuse the big city have the good environment, especially the good culture atmosphere and it is convenient to go anywhere.

Hi! I would like to live in small city, because I love the silence, I mean not the silence in its verbal mean, but like calm, cozy. The big city is to louder and dirty, there are a lot of cars and people, that are hastening in every directions and nobody has time to stop and talk with the others. They all are like robots in their own world. And the small city is something different- the most people known each other, they meet often, the life is queit and pleasant. The kids can play on the street, without their parents to worry if somthing will happen to them. The criminality is on a very low level and there is not so big risk for the people. The people in the small city are like in one community. And I think that is very good. They care for each other and in the big city no one will pay attention to you, if you need something. That's why i think living in a small city is better, than living in a big one.
