Do you still read newspapers in the can?

If not, then what good are local newspapers for? In this age of the internet where you get all news online, what good is flipping pages for? Do you read it on bus stops while waiting? Or while waiting for your take out order in a restaurant? Or while sitting on a bench in a mall while your wife is shopping? You can't bring your laptop everywhere all the time, because then you'd just look like your working. Certainly, I don't want to bring it inside the toilet. So what good are newspapers for these days?

im not usually in the toilet to need anything to read. and i think there is definately a need for newspapers. many people prefer to read their news, some dont own computers and some dont know how to use them - such as my grandfather who loves to read his newspapers. and its hard to get local news online. local newspapers are an amazing source of information to do with what is happening in your area, achievements, classifieds and so on. they have been around for a long time and i dont think we will lose them any time soon.

I've never felt the need to take any form of entertainment or pastime into the toilet If you're not actually ready to go why not wait to go into the room and once you've done, why would you want to sit in there with it... I haven't bought newspapers regularly for years. We get a free local paper delivered on Friday mornings so I usually have a read through with a cup of coffee in the evening.

That's where newspapers should go! With a cup of coffee. Or better yet, on a coffee shop, with a paper in hand, and a hot coffee on the table. Relaxed, and maybe a slice of pie with the coffee, but I digress... I must admit, I haven't brought papers in the bathroom, but I still see people who do, at work. Who would want to hold and read the papers after that?

My husband always takes the TV programme guide in there so, if we forget to buy it, I tell him he'll just have to hold it in!!!

So do you read these program guides after your husband has used, I mean read them?

Hey there bounce. :). I don't know if I have a good and very solid answer to your question but in my opinion, looking at the screen and holding a paper are very different. If I could, I'd always have the morning local paper. :). The smell of it is like smelling what used to be and remembering every good thing from the days of old (LOL, am I nortalgic or what?). Wishing you coffee, good pancakes, and a morning paper in the days to come. :)

I'll take your coffee and good pancakes. Just don't go smelling the morning local paper near the toilet. Nostalgic or not, you might smell something else. Have a great day!

Absolutely! I have a stack of reading material in the bathroom that I do indeed read while taking care of business. Sometimes it's the only time I get to read the paper! lol. As for the person who said why go in there if you're not ready to do your business.....well.....sometimes there are.......problems. Ahem. Reading something helps to relax and can facilitate the process much quicker. I get the Sunday paper every week and after I've read the stories that most interest me, the paper goes into the bathroom for reading material until I've finished reading it. After that, I use the newspaper as training papers for my puppies. I also use them to clean windows. Nothing cleans windows better than a newspaper! No streaks! Nothing!

For some reason, I find your responses both interesting and funny. Nothing more technical than facilitating the business process quicker. And using the newspaper as a tool for this facilitating.

You can still wrap things in them..Seriously though, I love my newspapers, the smell of them, the way they leave little black ink smudges on my fingers, snuggling up with the little ones to read the Sunday funnies. Not to mention the coupons, which I could still get on line, I know. Newspapers make me feel more connected for some reason. Maybe because they are steeped in tradition. Can't put a voice to it, I just know that I am not ready to give up my papers.

I think I know what you mean, when you say steeped in tradition. A lifetime ago, I was actually a school journalist. I had teachers and professors who were as old as father time. I won awards for the articles I wrote, and I even thought I could make it a career. That's before life came crashing in, but that's another story. But, like I said in the response above, I still like being relaxed with paper in hand. And hot coffee and pie(or maybe cake ) on the table reading the papers. Meaning reading the funnies, and maybe doing the crosswords.

Yes, there is still some mystique in reading the papers while having breakfast. It sounds all too relaxing. Just don't bring your papers to breakfast after you've read it in the can.

Love reading newspapers in the can. Its the perfect way of getting up to date and not staring against the wall. Its a ritual, a log of people do it and I think that it is a very personal moment that everyone can look forward to.

Did you do that on purpose? The typo about the log while you are talking/writing about doing business in the can. You are so funny! Thanks for responding.
