When you use smileys, do you really MEAN them?

What I mean is when you throw out a smiley out there, are you really cursing and is your face actually turning red ? Whenever you use one of those myLot smileys do you really feel that way, are you actually making that face, or what. . .? I know that whenever I post a laughing emoticon I am not really "laughing out loud." Sometimes I smile, but sometimes I don't even do that. Well, I'm laughing on the inside, believe me, or thinking of laughing So, when you use the mylot smileys, it shows what you feel, but do you actually laugh when you use the LOL smiley, are you really whistling when you use the WHISTLE smiley?

Yes, yes, YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! I use them a lot and whenever I do then I am always doing EXACTLY what the smilie says I'm doing and my neighbours can confirm that I DO laugh! Do I whistle? If I put the whistel smilies then yes I am whistling and if you watch my eyes in my avatar, they are also wandering while I whistle If you see me use the red one then it is becuase I am really cheesed off about something or with someone. Takes a lot to get me into that state but when it happens... I also make a lot of typos too

So. . . does that mean your skin color turns red whenever you do this ? I can believe the rest of them but if you can turn your skin red then I will be amazed. Oh, and where would you get a flag and mask from?

Yes it does! Saves on the heating bill if it happens in winter too - so there! Together with the mask I also have a helmet. It belonged to my grandpa. I have got a flag too, well three actually - a Union Jack, a Tricolre and a white one for when I surrender That's saves the fan in summer!

Do you have everything?! How about sunglasses for the COOL smiley and a floating hand for THUMBSUP/DOWN? Even saliva for the DROOL and floating Zs next to your head ?

I have a long way to go I think as I have yet to reach 500 but I have a convincing way to write which obviates the need for simileys. I wonder what smiley would have suited this answer. 'Smart Alec' perhaps?!!!

You can actually start using smileys as soon as you hit 200 posts. Reaching 500 is only for the copy and paste

I use the smileys alot as I find them fun and can be used to get a point across that could be misinterpreted. As for making the same face as them I don't really know but I am sure I have made some of the faces at times in discussions and meant it. I don't always laugh out loud but I do hope to most of the time I am on here. I like this one the best and I think I do make this face alot now that I think about

Yes the smileys have their uses especially in a chat context. That face in real life is exactly that when I am excited, my eyebrows float above my head and all

The smileys do work very well, they are just so silly that people will know if you're joking or not. That face is pretty funny, but I wonder what the equivalent would be in real life. . .

OF COURSE!! and with that I am honest to goodness. I like the fact that there are smileys or icons since it enables us to express the things that we sometimes have difficulty expressing in words. (Just like that red-colored angry face, which shows really how furious you are about something) As always, non-verbal forms of communication can say a lot more!!

Smiley language can say a lot, sometimes it may be more appropriate than words, but because of the fact that they are all so silly it is hard to really believe that someone using this is truly strongly angry. The smileys, I think, are mostly used to lighten up the situation. . .

Smileys, expressed or illustrated your mood but most of the time it's way of creating fun or word cartoon.

Well, if you really mean them, do you also really laugh and. . . wait a minute! You're under 200 posts, how can you post smileys on myLot? Or do you mean when you use smileys elsewhere?

If I am chatting on aol or facebook and I write a smiley then yes I really mean the face I put. If I didn't mean it I would put it up. If I add a smiley then that is what I am doing is smiling so I put it. On another note if I write LOL I really am laughing out loud most of the time. Not always sometimes I just find something funny so I write LOL but usually if I write LOL I usually am realling laughing out loud. If I write lmao or lmfao then that is exactly what I am doing. If something is so funny that I write lmao or lmfao then I really am sitting there laughing over it.

Ok so I should have said it a little different. When I write LOL something can be really funny and usually I do laugh out loud at the time that I write LOL. If I write LMAO I dont literally laugh by a$$ off as in having my a$$ actually fall off as well all know that doesnt happen. When I meant was when I write lmao I am actually laughing out loud for sure and very hard. I chat online a lot and love when something is so funny that I laugh out loud. It makes me feel better.

Well, sometimes we can say "lol' but not really laugh out loud. I can use that when I feel like laughing. . . It's hard to believe that you really do "lmao." You said that this is exactly what you're doing when you type it? But LMAO means Laughing my @$$ off, I can't believe that you are laughing so much that your behind is coming off. . . So, wouldn't you just say that you feel like that on the inside, not really doing it exactly?

When I use the smiley, I may not be actually sitting here smiling to myself but I am feeling it. I certainly am never angry when I add a smiley. I smile a lot by nature and add smileys to all my notes anyway....adding a smiley here just comes natural. I very rarely use the LOL but when I do...I've probably actually laughed or at least giggled. The whistle...no I don't actually whistle but again...feel like it. they are just images to show on line what you are feeling....most people don't actually sit here and act out those emotions....just feel them. Kine of like the words we type here...we aren't really saying them are we? so it's like that.

Hehe, I knew that smileys are just for showing your emotion but I was wondering about some people who use smileys a lot. . .I was just wondering do they act out all of those smileys? That does make sense, we don't say the words we type aloud, just like we don't always do everything that happens in those smileys. . .

Usually yes, I mean them. I think they help say how we feel. When on mylot I know I find posts that actually do have me laughing out loud. I guess it just depends on the situation.

Yes, it does depend on the situation. . . Sometimes you can use a smiley and really be laughing out loud, but sometimes you just smile or you just think about laughing. There are some things that make you laugh but others that just don't. . .

I use LOL a lot and it's just really to signify that I am really having a good laugh. I don't quite use a lot of emoticons here in mylot since I am still unable to but I really am not fond of using them anywhere else anyway. I just use " :) " and " :( " which for me are very generic . I just use them to further show how happy/glad or how sad I am especially when words aren't enough. They don't really show exactly how I feel but at least they give other people a clue.

Smileys have a lot of uses and they definitely let other people know how you are feeling. Words may not always be enough; even "lol" may not be enough compared to smileys. . . Oh, and why can't you use emoticons here in myLot?

I'm sure that the smileys will always be used to represent emotions, and how you're feeling, but my question was do you ever make the face when you add one? Do you laugh whenever using the laughing smiley. . .?

I think i mean it when I use smiley. I use them to express my emotions. My face does not become red literally it is true but I use it to express my inner feeling. i believe most of the people mean when they use smileys

27 Nov 09
Of course, they are used to express emotions and feelings, but sometimes when people are using the laughing smiley they may laugh out loud or just smile to themselves. I was just wondering about this, I didn't expect many people to say their faces turned red

Yes, the smileys work on the internet and they are usually used when we feel that way in real life. The happy and sad face, like you've said, can be done in real life as well.

sure we do mean when using smileys...atleast i do...it gives emotion to the emotionless sentences dnt u agree...it giv the state of the person using it...giving a life to the communication...which other wise would be plain lines...

27 Nov 09
Yes, I do agree, because it shows the reader that the person has emotion or is feeling something. When there are no smileys it is sometimes hard to read because I can't understand the emotion of that person. The smileys help make the messages a lot more fun

I really feel like my smiley... If I am happy, then I place a happy face, when sad then sad face... I think it is a really great possibility to show your emotions on internet as you don' t see that other person face in face :D
• United States
27 Nov 09
That is true, those smileys help because you can't really see the other person. . .It helps to show how you really feel. It also helps to enhance your words, if you say you're angry you can also throw in an angry smiley to highlight the fact that you are upset.

This is a good question. We all have wondered the same in MSN or while using our profile in one of those social networking sites. To tell you the truth I like using very exaggerated smileys, but I tend to have a straight face most of the times I use a laughing smiley. Some people deny it, but I bet most uf us are the same. lol

I actually do feel the same way, because most of the time I don't really laugh or whistle or anything. . . But we feel it on the inside, at least
@Jayervin (64)

Most of the time, I do mean them, but they're exaggerated. Like at times I just put it so they think that I'm actually doing that face but in front of the computer screen I'm just like =| . And I put "lol" just to fill in conversations at times, like if I don't know what to say or even when something's not that funny. But then again, I mean my smileys a lot of the time like I'm happy i'll put =D , =] , ^^ , x]. And some smileys are just like, i-dont-know-what-to-say kind of thing, like "xD" aha. But yeah, smileys are full of trickeries.

I do the same thing as you, sometimes I just add a smiley but I don't really do that or even feel the emotion. It's sort of a mask or something and most of the time I don't feel that way. But this only happens to me outside of myLot.com, and I always feel the same way whenever I use those smileys here

ofcourse, but my face dont turn that much red and exatly to that shape. but obviously it turns somewhat..
• United States
27 Nov 09
Well, maybe it doesn't have to turn all that red, but in the end you can say that you would feel very annoyed if (when you reach 200 posts...) you use the angry face.
